Hot Forestry Companies To Watch For 2014

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) stock investors may be smiling just a little more frequently lately. The company’s stock is up almost 30% from the beginning of the year, and Microsoft has made some positive announcements in the past couple of weeks.

Let’s take a quick look two main points the company’s investors can be happy about.

1. Windows Phone makes gains
This past quarter, the Windows Phone OS snagged the No. 3 spot away from BlackBerry for the first time, based on shipment numbers reported by IDC. Becoming the third most shipped smartphone OS is big news for Microsoft investors, who have been patiently waiting for the company to make gains in the mobile market.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) should be thanked at least in part. The company ships 79% of all Windows Phones and introduced the platform into markets it hadn’t previously has access to. Since the two companies joined forces, Nokia has shipped more than 20 million Windows Phones worldwide. The shipment numbers are important for Nokia, because the company now owes more to Microsoft in royalty payments than it will receive from the company for platform support payments. Nokia was initially getting more from Microsoft than it paid out, but those numbers have now flipped.

Competitors such as Sandridge Energy Inc. (SD), Penn Virginia Corp. (PVA), Newfield Exploration Co. (NFX) also have a negative ROE. An alternative could be Cabot Oil &Gas Corp. (COG), Range Resources Corp. (RRC), SM Energy Co. (SM), Pioneer Natural Resources Co. (PXD) or Whiting Petroleum Corp (WLL), Berry Petroleum Co. (BRY), but for investors searching for a higher ratio, Continental Resources Inc. (CLR) will be the best option.

We got numerous questions about Linn Energy (Nasdaq: LINE) in the chat. I commented on this in last week’s MLP Investing Insider, but it bears repeating here as there is obviously still a lot of interest. Igor’s answer to this question was “I expect the merger to close by year’s end, but I think Linn has some structural issues that go beyond [pending merger partner Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY)] with its debt load and past acquisition quality, so I’m steering clear. There are better upstream MLPs in our portfolios.”

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

It’s the moment investors in Linn Energy (LINE) have been waiting for–the SEC’s decision to approve or block it merger with Berry Petroleum (BRY).

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

So yes, the numbers were good enough to make Raymond James’ analyst Kevin Smith say that Linn “has finally turned the corner.” But even bullish analysts note that the numbers are kind of, well, beside the point until Linn’s merger with Berry Petroleum (BRY) is resolved. Pilgrim’s Corp. produces, processes, markets, and distributes fresh and frozen chicken products to retailers, distributors, and foodservice operators primarily in the United States. Its fresh chicken products consist of refrigerated (non-frozen) whole or cut-up chicken; and pre-marinated or non-marinated, as well as prepackaged case-ready chicken, which includes various combinations of freshly refrigerated, whole chickens, and chicken parts. The company was formerly known as Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation. Pilgrim’s Corp. was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Greeley, Colorado. Pilgrim’s Corp. operates as a subsidiary of JBS USA Holdings, Inc.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Arturo Cuevas]

It looks like you and I will be eating more chicken this 2014. Retail beef prices remain at record highs, and we consumers will likely be driven more toward comparatively cheaper chicken meat in 2014. Given this trend, loading up on shares of Sanderson Farms (NASDAQ: SAFM  ) , Pilgrim’s Pride (NASDAQ: PPC  ) , and Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN  )  should be worth considering.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, beyond the Dow, Pilgrim’s Pride (NASDAQ: PPC  ) soared 22% on apparent speculation that the poultry giant might be next on the chopping block as a target for a big acquisition. The proposed buyout of pork producer Smithfield Foods (NYSE: SFD  ) by a Chinese company was controversial in large part because of the geopolitical implications of international buyers purchasing U.S. food-industry assets, but business analysts have rightly looked instead at the implications for further consolidation in the industry. With no formal announcement from Pilgrim’s Pride, today’s move could invite scrutiny from the SEC and other regulators should any sort of definitive buyout bid materialize in the days to come.

  • [By David Trainer]

Pilgrim’s Pride Corp (PPC) is another one of my least favorite holdings in FVL. PPC is not a bad company. Its return on invested capital (ROIC) of 9% puts it near the median of all the companies we cover. The issue for PPC is its valuation. To justify its price of ~$17/share, PPC would need to grow after-tax profit (NOPAT) by 12% compounded annually. There is not a lot of value in this stock or this "value" index.

Tesla Motors (TSLA) — Winner The Model S isn’t cheap, but Tesla is selling enough of them to impress investors. Shares of the maker of plug-in electric vehicles raced to a new high after announcing that it delivered 6,892 cars in its latest quarter. Things will get even better in 2014 as Tesla expects to sell and deliver 35,000 vehicles. Tesla will need to ramp up its production — currently, roughly 600 cars a week — to closer to 1,000 Model S and new Model X cars by the end of the year. Conn’s (CONN) — Loser It isn’t easy running a consumer electronics store these days. Shares of Conn’s plunged 43 percent on Thursday after warning that its holiday quarter results will fall well short of its earlier expectations. If that seems like a significant drop for a mere miss, let’s dive a little deeper. Conn’s also warned that it’s suffering from higher loan delinquencies than usual. Conn’s provides in-house consumer credit on its appliances, furniture, mattresses, and consumer electronics, so revealing that 8.8 percent of its loan portfolio hasn’t made a payment in more than 60 days is problematic. Conn’s, which has stores in the Southwest, blames cold weather for disrupting payments, but things are never as simple as that. Conn’s was holding up better than its peers that had imploded earlier this year on reports that the holidays weren’t so jolly this time around.
