Hot Dow Dividend Companies For 2015

Along with announcing earnings, both Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) announced multi-billion-dollar stock buybacks. With so much money on the line, investors have to ask if this is the right move for these two oil-field service giants. Are these stocks cheap enough to warrant the buybacks or should these companies consider other options for those funds?

Before considering what else these companies could or should be doing with all that money, it’s a good idea to take a look at what’s already been decided. Taking a look at Schlumberger, the company just finished up its previous $8 billion buyback program which was approved in April 2008. This past quarter, the company spent $500 million and was able to snap up 6.8 million shares at an average price of $73.07, basically to complete the authorization. With shares trading about $10 more at the time of this writing, it would appear that the company got a pretty good deal.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tim Melvin]

The financial crisis bought an end to the takeover activity, but as the industry has recovered and valuations have stabilized we should once again see the former thrifts become too tempting for growth-starved larger banks to ignore. It is a worthwhile exercise to look at some older thrift conversions that may be beyond their “sell by” dates.

    Northwest Bancshares (NWBI)

Northwest Bancshares (NWBI) did its conversion offering back in 2009, right near the bottom of the financial crisis. The bank has 65 community banking offices in central and western Pennsylvania, western New York, eastern Ohio, and Maryland as well as 52 consumer finance offices in Pennsylvania. The bank has an above-average equity-to-assets ratio of 13.42, and nonperforming assets are just 1.59% of total assets. That puts NWBI in solid financial shape.

ETFs require no investment minimum beyond the price of one share. iShares Core S&P 500 (IVV) charges 0.07%, while the largest S&P 500 Index fund, SPDR S&P 500 (SPY), charges 0.09%. Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) charges 0.05% and is technically a separate share class of the Vanguard 500 Index mutual fund.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Much smaller is the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: IVV  ) . With about $43 billion under management, the iShares ETF comes with lower expenses of 0.07%, but much lower average daily volume of just 3.8 million shares. Like the Spiders, its share price roughly corresponds to a tenth of the value of the S&P 500 index.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Moreover, during extremely bullish periods, investors tend to drive up shares of investment management companies. Take a look at how BlackRock stock has performed over the past six months, compared to shares of its two largest ETFs, iShares Core S&P 500 (NYSEMKT: IVV  ) and iShares MSCI Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: EEM  ) :

One of the most famous scenes in the cult classic, the Graduate, was when Mr. McGuire took Dustin Hoffman’s character aside and said “Ben, I want to say one word to you, just one word: Plastics”; but what about the Berry Plastics Group Inc (NYSE: BERY) and its performance verses that of the iShares S&P 500 Index ETF (NYSEARCA: IVV), iShares Russell Midcap Index Fund ETF (NYSEARCA: IWR) and iShares S&P SmallCap 600 Index ETF (NYSEARCA: IJR)? I should mention that plastics and the Berry Plastics Group was not the place to be yesterday as the stock took a tumble on reduced guidance.

    From Accorda’s press release:

Acorda Therapeutics, Inc. today announced data from a Phase 2 proof-of-concept study of dalfampridine extended release tablets, 10 mg (dalfampridine-ER) in people with post-stroke deficits. In the study, treatment with dalfampridine-ER was well-tolerated and improved walking, as measured by the Timed 25-Foot Walk test (T25FW).

RBC Capital Markets’ Michael Yee and team put the news in context:

In the short-term, ACOR’s scripts look a bit mediocre tracking a tad shy of Q3 consensus, and overall new scripts are down too. Longerterm, we believe value creation will need to come from 1) expanding the label to a new indication in “post-stroke” pts which is going into Phase II/III and could theoretically double the commercial sales, 2) its re-myelinating antibody rHigM22 in Phase I might get attention because Biogen’s Phase II LINGO re-myelinating program could be very intriguing in H2:14. Risks are that a Paragraph IV should be expected in January 2014 around the corner and the “post-stroke” data is interesting but not as compelling versus the MS indication. Overall, however this will take some time to play out as the next post-stroke study doesn’t even begin until Q2:14 so data not until at least 2015+. That said, expectations are pretty low and we think the stock is pretty cheap at $1.1B EV or ~3x sales plus all potential up side from label expansion or pipeline.
