Hot Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2014

LONDON — If you want to be eligible for a dividend payment, or if you’re watching for possible share-price falls, keeping up with ex-dividend dates can prove beneficial. So long as you hold the shares up to and including that day, you’ll get your money.

We have a number of companies from the FTSE 100 reaching their crucial dates next week. Here are three that will go ex-dividend next Wednesday, June 26.

Compass Group (LSE: CPG  )
Catering and support services firm Compass Group announced an interim dividend of 8 pence per share along with first-half results on May 15, and that represented an 11% rise on the previous year. Revenue rose by 4.1% to £8.8 billion, with underlying pre-tax profit up 8.1% to £611 million and earnings per share up 11% to 24.5 pence.

If the second-half dividend is lifted by a similar 11%, we should be looking at a full-year payment of 23.6 pence per share for a yield of 2.8% on the current share price of 845 pence. The forward yield would have been more than 3%, had the share price not risen by 30% over the past 12 months.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Stocks turned early morning losses into gains today, as the market continues to digest yesterday’s Fed meeting, and AT&T (T), JPMorgan Chase (JPM), First Solar (FSLR) and Frontier Communications (FTR) gain.

  • [By Dan Burrows]

That rebound knocked the dividend yield down from 7.5% a month ago, but it’s still remarkably high for a dividend stock. However, in the longer term, CTL stock has been awful, losing 24% of its value in three years. CTL is betting on an Internet-based TV broadcast service, but it will have to get working soon to stop this slide.

    #2: Frontier Communications (FTR)

    FTR Dividend Yield: 8.21%

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Companies that could benefit from a pickup in capital spending include Akamai Technologies (AKAM) and priceline.com (PCLN), which have the highest sensitivity to “non-residential fixed investment in Intellectual Property Products,” Frontier Communications (FTR) and Lam Research (LRCX), which have the highest sales sensitivity to non-residential fixed investment in Equipment,” and Transocean (RIG), which is among the companies with a high exposure to “non-residential fixed investment in Structures.”

  • [By David Dittman]

Question: How about Frontier Communications Corp (NYSE: FTR)?

Answer: I’m leery of the rural telecoms right now. I do recommend Consolidated Communications Holdings Inc (NSDQ: CNSL) in the UF Income Portfolio, but it benefits from a JV with Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE: VZ) that generates substantial cash flow and sets it apart from its peers, who are otherwise struggling against declines in traditional wireline businesses as well as intense competition from bigger, better-funded national players in broadband and business service.

Hot Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2014: TECO Energy Inc.(TE)

TECO Energy, Inc., an electric and gas utility company, through its subsidiaries, engages in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution, and sale of electric energy. It provides retail electric service to approximately 672,000 customers in West Central Florida with a net winter system generating capability of 4,684 megawatts. The company also engages in the purchase, distribution, and marketing of natural gas. It serves approximately 336,000 residential, commercial, industrial, and electric power generation customers in Florida. In addition, the company owns mineral rights, owns or operates surface and underground mines, and owns interests in coal processing and loading facilities. TECO Energy, Inc. was founded in 1899 and is headquartered in Tampa, Florida.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Burrows]

But that does afford some opportunity for new money, which can get in on the 5.29% dividend yield — and a much cheaper stock. Transocean now trades for a bit more than 7 times forward earnings — half as expensive as the broader market.

    #9: Teco Energy (TE)

    TE Dividend Yield: 5.42%

  • [By David Dittman]

Answer: I don’t anticipate a spate of dividend cuts. FirstEnergy Corp’s (NYSE: FE) problems were apparent last fall, when it announced 2013 Q3 numbers. We do have TECO Energy Inc (NYSE: TE) and PG&E Corp (NYSE: PCG) on the UF Dividend Watch List, though the latter is in a much more precarious position than the former.

The regulatory environment is generally improving, as state and federal authorities are beginning to recognize the investment utilities have made over the past half-decade in system reliability and capacity expansion.

Another key supporting dividends is a healthier US economy, which should support better power demand from commercial and industrial customers.

  • [By David Dittman]

TECO Energy Inc (NYSE: TE), a member of the UF Dividend Watch List, was highest at 94.6 percent. AES Corp (NYSE: AES), the January 2014 UF Growth Spotlight, was lowest at 12.4 percent.

  • [By Justin Loiseau]

Around the same time, TECO Energy’s (NYSE: TE  ) Tampa Electric utility requested an even larger average $11.68 bill boost, but only around $1.28 of that accounts for fuel costs. TECO has been behind the times on its return on equity (the single-most important investment indicator for regulated utilities), and previously expected its ROE to clock in at less than 9% for 2013. But TECO’s request was approved in September, and the company can now enjoy 10.25% ROE off its 5.5% increase in regulated revenue.

Hot Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2014: CPFL Energia S.A.(CPL)

CPFL Energia S.A., through its subsidiaries, engages in the generation, distribution, and sale of electricity in Brazil. It generates electricity through hydroelectric, thermal, biomass, and wind power plants. The company also involves in the provision of energy commercialization, consultancy, and advisory services to agents in the energy sector; manufacture, commercialization, rental, and maintenance of electromechanical equipment; and provision of administrative services, as well as telephone answering services. It has an installed generating capacity of 2,309 MW. The company was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jake L’Ecuyer]

    Leading and Lagging Sectors
Utilities sector surged 0.26%, saw CPFL Energia SA (NYSE: CPL) as the top gainer. Among leading sector stocks, gains came from Consolidated Water Co (NASDAQ: CWCO), Companhia Paranaense de Energia (NYSE: ELP) and Public Service Enterprise Group (NYSE: PEG).

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Brazilian electricity giant CPFL Energia S.A. (NYSE: CPL  ) sank 20%, and recently yielded 5.9%. Its long-term debt has been rising, largely due to acquisitions, and its free cash flow has been shrinking (and even turning negative recently). But it has been investing heavily in alternative energies, and it serves a massive and growing market in Brazil. The country’s growth has been slower than many would like, but that won’t last forever.

Hot Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2014: Federated Investors Inc. (FII)

Federated Investors, Inc. is a publicly owned investment manager. The firm provides its services to individuals, including high net worth individuals, banking or thrift institutions, investment companies, pension and profit sharing plans, pooled investment vehicles, charitable organizations, state or municipal government entities, and registered investment advisors. The firm invests in the public equity and fixed income markets across the globe. It invests in growth and value stocks of small-cap, mid-cap, and large-cap companies. The firm makes its fixed income investments in ultra-short, short-term, and intermediate-term mortgage-backed, U.S. Government, U.S. Corporate, high yield, and municipal securities. It employs a fundamental and a quantitative analysis to make its equity investmen ts. The firm also makes sector-focused equity investments. Federated Investors was founded in 1955 and is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with an additional office in New York, New York.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

But there are winners–and they’re any stock that’s helped by higher rates. There are mutual fund companies with big money-market fund businesses, who wouldn’t be forced to run these funds for what is essentially free. Federated Investors (FII), for instance, has jumped 2.1% to $27.99. Life insurance companies, too, are rising because they should be able to earn more on their investments. MetLife (MET), for instance, has risen 1.3% to $53.03.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

For money market fund managers, the debt ceiling drama is just the latest in a long series of challenges. Low rates have forced Federated Investors (NYSE: FII  ) , Schwab (NYSE: SCHW  ) , and many other major money market fund managers to subsidize their funds, accepting reduced management fees just to keep their interest rates from going negative. As the graph below shows, fund levels have fallen sharply in response to those low rates as well, hurting fund managers’ profitability.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Lately, though, T. Rowe Price hasn’t benefited as much from share-price gains. Competitor Invesco (NYSE: IVZ  ) has managed to expand its margins and produce growth among its current lineup of funds, with exposure to a big range of markets that leaves it broadly placed to serve its customers’ needs. But for T. Rowe Price and peer Federated Investors (NYSE: FII  ) , investors haven’t been putting as much money to work in their funds as analysts had expected to see, and that has led to some growth shortfalls. Federated in particular missed its earnings estimates in its most recent quarter, and analysts see growth there slowing to just 3%. T. Rowe Price has better prospects, retaining its double-digit revenue growth, but after a substantial move upward at the beginning of the year, its stock has treaded water.

Investors have always been interested in stocks that pay dividends, but lately, low interest rates on bonds and other fixed-income investments have made solid dividend payers even more valuable. Among the most promising dividend stocks in the market is Cincinnati Financial (NASDAQ: CINF  ) , and one big reason is that it is one of the few exclusive companies to make the list of Dividend Aristocrats. In order to become a member of this elite group, a company must have raised its dividend payouts to shareholders every single year for at least a quarter-century. Only a few dozen stocks manage to make the cut, and those that do tend to stay there for a long time.

In the investing world, boring businesses don’t get much attention. The financial media obsesses over the next hot stock, preferring to ignore the seemingly sleepy companies that generate reliable profits year after year. Some of the high-quality companies that fly under the radar are pure industrials, such as Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR  ) , Dover  (NYSE: DOV  ) , and Illinois Tool Works (NYSE: ITW  ) .
