Hot Dividend Companies To Invest In 2014

PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) will release its quarterly report on Wednesday, but its stock has already popped higher, hitting all-time record highs earlier this month. Despite the share-price celebration, though, Pepsi earnings growth has been somewhat less impressive, raising concerns about whether the stock is getting ahead of itself.

Many investors think of PepsiCo only for its No. 2 beverage business, but the company goes a lot further than rival Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) in providing both snacks and drinks for hungry consumers. The snack business introduces both opportunities and challenges for PepsiCo, and lately, the company has had to focus not just on its core North American market but also on trying to make the most of growth prospects around the world. Let’s take an early look at what’s been happening with PepsiCo over the past quarter and what we’re likely to see in its quarterly report.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Dittman]

Answer: It’s too soon to say what the financial impact of the Winnipeg incident will have on TransCanada. The impact for its customers, including Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) and Great Plains Energy (NYSE: GXP), may be more acute in the short term. TransCanada will definitely be under increased regulatory scrutiny.
I’m a fan of TransCanada for the long term. It has a solid, diverse and growing presence in North American energy infrastructure. It’s about much more than Keystone XL.

  • [By Richard Stavros]

In fact, investment opportunities in this niche could soon be on the rise. Several utilities have been considering creating standalone transmission companies this year, including Xcel Energy Inc (NYSE: XEL). But whether it’s a standalone company or the sale of transmission assets to a transmission company, regulatory approval will still be key. For instance, regulators declined Entergy Corp’s (NYSE: ETR) sale of its transmission assets to transmission company ITC Holdings Corp (NYSE: ITC) in 2013.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Lorillard Inc. (NYSE:LO), Altria Group Inc. (NYSE:MO), and the rest of the big tobacco names may want to take notice. For that matter, anyone with a presence in the electronic cigarette market (which still includes the aforementioned Altria and Lorillard, but many other small payers too) may want to pay attention as well…. e-cig newcomer American Heritage International Inc. (OTCBB:AHII) has just added two states to the number where its premium product can be purchased. The young company promised it was going to expand after jumping into the game on a small scale in – and this isn’t a misprint – January of this year. With today’s addition of Nevada and Illinois, AHII is now giving MO and LO a run for their money in eleven states. Thirty-nine more to go.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Lorillard Inc. (NYSE:LO) and Altria Group Inc. (NYSE:MO) might want to take a look over their shoulder… or perhaps take another, longer look. Not only is the cigarette space as competitive as ever for the likes of LO and MO, but there are some new faces playing the game. And, their strategy is to play the game in a way that’s never been played before. Even more alarming to the likes of Altria and Lorillard? These new players are already showing some great progress with this “new way”, and are on pace to capture $10 billion of the current annual cigarette market by 2017, up from around $1.0 billion last year.

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Altria Group Inc. (NYSE: MO) is a company that keeps managing to remain influential. It has started to pick up its effort in the e-cigarettes market, and rumors of industry consolidation would make it even more defensive — plus it has a minority stake in SABMiller for beer. Trading at $36.50, Altria has a 52-week range of $33.12 to $38.58. The consensus price target from analysts is now $40.00. Altria also has a high dividend yield of 5.3% and a submarket valuation of 14 times expected earnings. This may change some day, but betting that the tobacco industry will disappear has just not ever worked.

  • [By Lawrence Meyers]

That means you should go with either Altria Group (MO) or Philip Morris International (PM). And if you’re only interested in buying one, I think I’d select MO stock. It pays a slightly better divided (5.2% vs. 4.7%).

While it’s not obvious from the chart, you can separate these institutions into three different buckets. The first bucket concerns the most widely discussed too-big-to-fail banks: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo. Then comes the unofficial too-big-to-fail lenders (those with assets in excess of $50 billion and thus subject to the Federal Reserve’s more stringent stress test process). This group contains U.S. Bank (NYSE: USB  ) , PNC Financial (NYSE: PNC  ) , and BB&T Bank (NYSE: BBT  ) , among others. And the final group encompasses lesser-known banks like First Niagara Financial (NASDAQ: FNFG  ) and People’s United Financial (NASDAQ: PBCT  ) with between $20 billion and $50 billion in assets.

SUPERVALU was founded in 1871 and is based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Vanina Egea] of 700 to 800 small format stores annually adds to an increasing number of dollar stores subscribing to loss-leader strategies. In this context, the firm undertook a fair price plus promotion strategy in fiscal 2013. This initiative has lowered prices to a competitive position at the expense of margins, in the hope for market share gains in the long term.

    Cost Cuts

Apart from underperforming stores sellout, Supervalu has undertaken additional cost reduction initiatives which are expected to lower administrative expenses by $250 million through fiscal 2014. The reduction of its store count, I turn, is expected to generate $80 million to $90 million in savings in the next three years.

    Moving Forward

In the third quarter of fiscal 2013, the firm reported adjusted earnings of $0.13, a significant improvement compared to the negative $0.07 delivered the year before. Revenues, however, fell by $1.05 in relation to the prior year, due to negative comps in the retail segment, which have been declining for four consecutive years.

Further, the firm does not have any share buyback plans for fiscal 2014 and will not pay dividends to shareholders until March 2018.

Supervalu showcases a negative return on capital of -9.24% compared to the industry average of 20.02%. And its three-year average revenue growth delivered a dismal -25.1% compared to its peers’ median of 1.0%.

Investment guru John Keeley (Trades, Portfolio) recently sold out his holding in the company, backing my feeling that despite the company’s efforts, a good position in a highly competitive market will be hard to achieve.

Matthew Staver/Bloomberg via Getty Images Cerberus Capital Management’s $9 billion deal to merge Safeway (SWY) with Albertsons is a bet that a larger supermarket chain can better fend off an attack on the grocery business by big-box stores and online retailers. Safeway, the No. 2 grocery-store operator in the U.S., agreed Thursday to be acquired by Cerberus’s Albertsons for about $40 a share. The deal will unite two chains with locations across the country — especially in the West — and narrow Kroger’s (KR) lead as the nation’s top supermarket company. Cerberus, a private-equity firm that has spent years investing in the supermarket industry, will use the new company’s heft to combat a growing array of threats. Big-box retailers such as Walmart Stores (WMT) and warehouse clubs are increasingly targeting grocery customers, using their size and breadth of products to attract shoppers. Online food sellers and delivery services, including Amazon.com (AMZN), also have made neighborhood supermarkets less essential than before. “This merger will improve our competitive position,” Safeway Chief Executive Officer Robert Edwards, who will be in charge of the combined company, said Thursday on a conference call. “Our customers will benefit from significant cost saving synergies and a stronger management team.” Safeway shares fell as much as 6.3 percent to $37 in extended trading, reflecting concerns the deal may not close at the current price. The shares had increased 21 percent this year through the close of regular trading Thursday, outpacing the 1.6 percent gain of the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. Blackhawk Network As part of the agreement, investors will get $32.50 a share in cash, plus stock in Safeway’s gift-card unit Blackhawk Network Holdings (HAWK), according to a statement Thursday. Safeway, based in Pleasanton, Calif., had said last month that it was in talks about a sale of the company. Assuming a diluted share count of about 235 million shares,

  • [By Grace L. Williams]

Curious to see what the competition was doing, we found Safeway (SWY) down 0.1% at $31.67, Supervalu (SVU) down 1.4% at $6.25, and Sprouts Farmers Markets (SFM) up 0.9% at $39.60.

Nucor Corporation was founded in 1940 and is based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Investors might have been steeling themselves for more losses in steel stocks after Nucor (NUE) offered disappointing guidance–but that was more than offset by price increases at ArcelorMittal (MT).

    ASSOCIATED PRESS

Shares of Nucor have gained 0.6% to $49.75 at 2:43 p.m., while ArcelorMittal has risen 1.4% to $15.31, US Steel (X) has jumped 4.6% to $25.31, AK Steel (AKS) has climbed 4.4% to $6.39 and Steel Dynamics (STLD) has advanced 1.6% to $16.95.

Nucor said it would earn 30 to 35 cents a share during the first quarter, below forecasts for 48 cents. Cowen’s Anthony B. Rizzuto and team explain what happened:

Weather was the main culprit as the frigid temperatures disrupted customer demand, decreased the amount of railcar availability and exacerbated the already seasonally weak performance for [Nucor’s] fabricated constructions productions business. In addition, imports have negatively impacted pricing and margins at the company’s bar and sheet mills.

Nomura’s Curt Woodworth and team lowered their first-quarter estimates but had some good news for steel stocks too:

Ahead of mid-quarter updates from the mini-mills ([Nucor and Steel Dynamics]) and [AK Steel], which we expect within the coming week, we lower 1Q-14 estimates for our steel coverage, though we continue to have a positive view of equity performance going forward.

Despite today’s gains, it’s been a tough year for steel stocks. Nucor is off 6.8%at $49.76, US Steel has fallen 14% to $25.31, AK Steel has plunged 22% to $6.38, Steel Dynamics has declined 13% to $16.95 and ArcelorMittal has dropped 14% to $15.31.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Ever have those moments where you read an analyst report and are left scratching your head? Well, Credit Suisse’s downgrades of US Steel (X) and Nucor (NUE) today fit the bill.
