Hot Dividend Companies For 2014

Shares of Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) are down after the company reported a $1.93 billion loss on the second quarter. A record drop in gold prices during the quarter was combined with a big asset write-down, leading to the loss. However, digging deeper into the numbers, it wasn’t all bad.

Digging into the quarter
Goldcorp reported revenue of $889 million and adjusted net earnings of $117 million, or $0.14 a share; however, note that those earnings adjust out the company’s massive non-cash charge. Even after adjusting for that charge, earnings are down significantly from the second quarter of last year where the company delivered adjusted net earnings of $332 million, or $0.42 a share. The biggest news in the quarter was that the company took a non-cash impairment charge of $1.96 billion relating to the exploration potential of its Penasquito mine, which is why the company’s headline number showed a $1.93 billion loss.

I also like both Public Storage (PSA) and its Series T preferred stock.

As a result of the financial crisis, many people lost their homes. What happens when people get evicted from a house? They downsize. That’s one reason we’ve seen apartment REIT stock prices appreciate, but that’s also why Public Storage has done so well. You can’t fit a household’s worth of stuff into an apartment, so you rent storage for all those extra-large sofas. Housing remains troubled, and with people increasingly being moved into part-time jobs or leaving the workforce, this overall secular trend is continuing.

Public Storage’s(PSA) third-quarter profit rose 7.7% on the strength of higher occupancy and rents. Meanwhile, the real estate investment trust’s funds from operations, an important metric in the sector, grew during the period.

What do BG Medicine, Inc. (NASDAQ:BGMD) and Pentair, Ltd. (NYSE:PNR) have in common? Most investors would say absolutely nothing. BGMD is a small cap medical diagnostics company, while PNR is a large cap industrial equipment manufacturer. Those are worlds that simply never collide. Getty Images Tax time can be stressful enough without worrying about whether your tax issues will spill over to your credit reports and affect your scores. The good news is that simply filing an extension or finding that you owe the IRS a chunk of money come tax time shouldn’t affect your credit reports. It’s only when you don’t have the money to pay what you owe that it can affect your credit. Following are five ways that your yearly payment to Uncle Sam can affect your credit. Going Into Hock to Pay Taxes Many years ago, in my first year of self-employment, my accountant calculated my estimated taxes but forgot about the “self-employment tax” — the portion of taxes that cover Medicare and Social Security. As a result, I learned on April 14 (!) that I owed a much bigger tax bill than I expected. At that time there was no option to pay by credit card, and I didn’t want to drain my savings entirely to pay it. I ended up taking out a personal loan from my bank at a low interest rate and paid it off fairly quickly. It worked out OK. The loan, however, did appear on my credit reports. It didn’t create any problems for me, but if you are going to borrow from another source such as credit cards or a personal loan to pay your taxes, keep in mind that debt can affect your credit scores. How much it will hurt (or help) your scores depends on everything else in your credit reports. Keep it in perspective, though. After all, you may find it’s better to owe a credit card issuer than to owe the IRS. Another option is to enter into an installment agreement with the IRS where you pay them monthly until your balance is paid off. In most cases, these payment plans don’t appear on your credit. However, if you owe a large amount, you could wind up with a Notice of Federal Tax Lien filed against you, and that will definitely affect your credit. (More on that later.) Quick Refund Woes If you need your refund fast, you may be tempted to take advantage of a “refund

H&R Block Inc. (HRB)  shares fell 1.3% to $30.55 on moderate volume after the tax service provider reported an adjusted fiscal third-quarter loss of 77 cents a share on revenue of $200 million. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected a loss of 8 cents a share on revenue of $519.3 million.

  • [By U.S. News]

Pablo Martinez Monsivais/AP If you don’t make much money, you might assume doing your taxes will be simple. After all, there isn’t much information you need to give the Internal Revenue Service, given your meager paycheck. But, of course, some people who find it tough to make ends meet don’t have just one job — they have two or three, and perhaps they earn extra money working at home, which can complicate a tax form. Additional challenges: Some taxpayers are part of a blended family, or part of a family unit that isn’t quite family. So while you may not earn much, it doesn’t necessarily mean your taxes will be simple. Fortunately, many low- to moderate-income individuals can get free professional help to do their taxes. “There’s a wide swath of low- to moderate-income taxpayers who can get their taxes done for free — approximately 100 million taxpayers who are eligible,” says Tim Hugo, executive director of the Free File Alliance, a coalition of companies that work with the IRS to provide free tax preparation and filing. So if you can’t afford to hire someone to do your taxes or buy software, you may not have to go it alone. Here are the questions you likely have — and the answers. Who qualifies? Generally, if your adjusted gross income is $52,000 or less, you probably qualify for help. Adjusted gross income, for those who need a refresher, is your gross income after exemptions and deductions. Your gross income is all your income — not just your salary, but alimony, proceeds from a car you sold and so on. So if your income is close to $52,000, you might not actually know if you qualify until you do your taxes and see what number you land on. To take advantage of free tax software — more on that in a moment — your adjusted gross income will generally need to be $58,000 or less. Where do I go? You will probably want to find a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, known as VITA, or a Tax Counseling for the Elderly program, known as TCE. Both are

Hot Dividend Companies For 2014: Paragon Shipping Inc.(PRGN)

Paragon Shipping Inc. provides shipping transportation services worldwide. The company engages in the ocean transportation of various drybulk cargoes and containers. Its fleet consists of 11 drybulk vessels with a total carrying capacity of 747,994 dwt. The company was founded in 2006 and is based in Voula, Greece.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 name shipping player that’s starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Paragon Shipping (PRGN), which is engaged in transporting drybulk cargoes, including such commodities as iron ore, coal, grain and other materials along shipping routes worldwide. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 114%.

If you take a look at the chart for Paragon Shipping, you’ll notice that this stock just recently took out its 50-day moving average of $4.19 a share with strong upside volume. Shares of PRGN are showing relative strength today, despite the overall market weakness, which shows this stock is in strong demand at current levels. This move is now starting to push shares of PRGN within range of triggering a big breakout trade

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PRGN if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $4.90 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 25,811 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PRGN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $5.70 a share. If that level gets taken out with volume, then PRGN could easily tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $7 to $8.35 a share.

Traders can look to buy PRGN off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $4.19 a share, or below its 200-day moving average at $3.74 a share. One can also buy PRGN off strength once it clears $4.90 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point. I would add to either position once PRGN takes out its 52-week high at $5.70 a share with strong upside volume flows.
