Hot Defensive Stocks To Invest In Right Now

India is slowly, or rapidly, becoming a complete financial disaster. Growth has slowed and the nation is trying to do what it can to fight inflation while still trying to juice up the economy. India is one of the great BRIC emerging market nations, but it is not living up anywhere close to its potential. So, the question is, what can they do now that the rupee is hitting yet another all-time low?

Wednesday’s closing levels in India should alarm investors of emerging markets and developed markets alike. The Hindustan Times confirmed that the rupee at 68.80 is the lowest official close. Some are trying to blame the possibility of war or military conflict in Syria, but this one-way ticket to financial hell in India is more of a unique situation than it is a global one.

Even the BSE Sensex, what used to be known as the Bombay Stock Exchange, has now suffered another 500 point plunge before recovering. We recently warned that emerging market investors would try and try to remain patient, up to a point, but capital is exiting the nation rapidly and investors have decided for now to not allocate new capital into India.

www.youtube.com From a greeting card giant’s savvy viral video catching fire to a key Best Buy executive calling it quits, here’s a rundown of the week’s smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) — Winner Johnson & Johnson’s signature Band-Aids and its “No More Tears” baby shampoo won’t be necessary after the consumer and pharmaceuticals giant posted better than expected quarterly results. Adjusted earnings climbed to $1.54 a share from a $1.22 a share showing a year earlier. Analysts were holding out for a profit of $1.48 a share. Revenue also clocked in better than expected, topping $18 billion. A good report sometimes isn’t enough to please the market, but Johnson & Johnson kept the positive vibes coming by raising its forecast for all of 2014. US Airways — Loser It’s probably the nightmare of anyone working social media for a major corporation. You’re surfing the Web between posting corporate tweets, you come across something shockingly naughty, and you want to share it with a friend so you copy the link. Unfortunately you forget to update your copied link when publicly responding to a client on Twitter, only to realize that you’re sending a link of a naked woman getting intimate with a model airplane to more than 420,000 followers. This is what happened to American Airlines Group’s (AAL) US Airways on Monday. It quickly deleted the tweet, but not before word spread of the deed. Accidents happen. Even folks on top of the social media universe are human. It’s still embarrassing. Netflix (NFLX) — Winner Comcast (CMCSK) customers should experience better Netflix connections. We figured this would happen back in February when Netflix struck a deal with the country’s largest cable and broadband Internet provider to improve video quality, but now it’s official. Netflix publishes monthly data on connection speeds for its service across all of the leading access providers. It’s a smart move by Netfli

cinz/Flickr Apple (AAPL) is in talks with Comcast to enter into a deal for a streaming-television service that would allow Apple set-top boxes to bypass congestion on the Web, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The discussions are in early stages and there are a lot of hurdles to be crossed before a definitive agreement could be reached, the Journal said. Apple, which wants its TV service’s traffic to be separated from public internet traffic over the “last mile” for faster transmission, is looking for special treatment from Comcast’s (CMCSA) (CMCSK) cables to bypass congestion, the report said. Comcast and Apple declined to comment on the report. Apple has been in talks for a faster TV set-top box with Time Warner Cable (TWC), which recently agreed to be bought by Comcast. Apple’s $99 TV box competes with similar streaming devices from Roku and Google (GOOG). Netflix agreed last month to pay Comcast for faster speeds, throwing open the possibility that more content companies will have to shell out for better service.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don’t work out quite as planned. From a new online retailer blowing away expectations in its first quarter since going public to the world’s largest burger chain eating crow over its chicken wings, here’s a rundown of the week’s smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Comcast (CMCSK), Netflix (NFLX), and You — Winners (Mostly) The week kicked off with Netflix shelling out some dough to be able to stream its content faster for Comcast’s Xfinity broadband subscribers. It’s a move that’s long overdue, as Netflix’s monthly reports on different access providers showed that Xfinity speeds on Netflix video streams were starting to decline in recent months. This is the kind of stuff that would result in consumers either ditching Comcast or unsubscribing from Netflix so this “peering” arrangement benefits both companies. Naturally it’s also good news for Comcast subscribers. No one likes to see online videos stop to buffer or degrade in image quality. Everybody wins — mostly. (The down side, though, can be viewed like this: Netflix, the 800 lb. gorilla of streaming video, just caved on the net neutrality fight and agreed to pay for bandwidth. It’ll have to pass that cost on to subscribers eventually. And with Netflix out of the fight, expect any smaller company that sees its content being throttled to pay the Danegeld quickly, too.) Sony (SNE) — Loser The Japanese consumer electronics giant has been struggling on several fronts lately, and now it’s retreating on the retail front, too. Sony revealed plans to close 20 of its 31 Sony Store locations in this country. The outcome probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone that has walked by one of its locations. However, Sony’s been scaling back through layoffs, selling off its Vaio computer business, and other acts of surrender. Keeping the Sony Store locations would just be a pu
