Hot Consumer Service Companies For 2017

At first glance, it looked like Finish Line (FINL) posted pretty decent financial results.

The athletic footwear and apparel retailer matched estimates with fiscal second quarter EPS of 53 cents, with revenue above Street forecasts. Same-store sales rose 5.1%, also besting estimates.

So why is Finish Lines stock price tanking today with shares falling 5.5% to $22.67?

Management said during a post release conference call that September same store sales rose at a rate in the low single digits.http://www.investors.com/news/finish-line-sales-surprise/

Cowen analyst John Kernan, meanwhile, says Finish Line delivered better-than-expected same-store sales at the expense of product margin, which fell 200 basis points due to promotions aimed at clearing out merchandise.

FINL reported above consensus SSS but in-line EPS as product margin pressure and SG&A deleverage caused operating margin to decline y/y. We are lowering our 2H:17 and FY18 EPS estimates and believe consensus EPS growth of +14% for FY18 does not look conservative. FINL trades at a premium to FL (which we prefer) and shares appear fully valued without meaningful operating margin expansion in FY18.
