Hot Construction Companies To Buy Right Now

Stocks are within striking distance of reclaiming the all-time high reached less than two months back, with the pullback resulting concerns that the Fed was getting ready to pare back its QE program. We will get more clarity on the Fed question this afternoon with the release of the minutes of the Fed’s June meeting. Also at play in today’s session are renewed concerns about China’s growth outlook after another weak economic reading – this time about that country’s exports.

The stock market’s ability to claw back its losses over the last few weeks despite the persistent rise in benchmark treasury yields, is very impressive. My sense is that these gains will prove sustainable only if they reflect investors’ collective judgment that an improved economic outlook trumps less Fed QE and somewhat higher interest rates. But if the market’s gains reflect the hope that ‘Tapering’ was not imminent, then we may be at risk of giv ing all of these back in the coming days.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Mid-cap construction and engineering firm KBR Inc. (KBR) is another name with a mountain of cash sitting on the books. The firm currently sports $895 million in net cash on its balance sheet, enough to cover 29% of its current price per share. That effectively reduces the risks of this contractor’s share price by a third.

KBR is an engineering and construction services contractor that primarily serves the U.S. government and the energy sector. Until 2006, KBR was a unit of Halliburton (HAL), a connection that gives it deep-rooted connections with the oil and gas business, where the firm has transitioned much of its sales efforts. Prior to that, KBR’s bread and butter was the sole contractor of food service, utilities, laundry, and other services for U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan – but that changed after a series of missteps from KBR that prompted the government to add other contractors to the current iteration of the LOGCAP contract.

Bigger exposure to the private sector is a good thing -– restructuring efforts and a new management team should help steer the ship around. It’s that huge cash position that helps to make KBR worth a closer look in 2014. While it’s more speculative than the other names on our cash-rich list, it’s also the one with the most upside potential on near-term catalysts.

But again, the most glaring red flag is the valuation of GOOG stock. Shares of Google stock are currently trading at a P/E ratio of 30, which is certainly rich. Consider that Apple (AAPL) and  Microsoft (MSTF) sport multiples of only about 14. These companies also have decent dividend yields.

I normally don’t look at charts much, but comparing Orange to its competitors in the French telecommunications market is quite fascinating. As one can see, incumbents Bouygues (BOUYF.PK) and Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) (owner of SFR) saw similar price declines. The market, on the other hand, rapidly bid up the price of new entrant Iliad SA (ILIAF.PK), as a result of forecasts for Iliad to capture significant mobile market share (which it did, around 10%). The wide divergence in price relative to changes in underlying value favor going long the incumbents, including Orange. Because this time it’s different.

Nigeria’s reformed banking system has provided many foreigners with an attractive means to invest in the fast-growing domestic economy. The banking industry is important, not only because of the rise of microfinance, but because of the move by banks into consumer banking. Until recently, banks were mainly financing large businesses or the government through bond purchases. Following a banking crisis in 2008, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) conducted an audit of the commercial banking sector. All banks that failed the audit had their CEOs replaced. The state-owned Asset Management Corporation (AMCON) was created to purchase non-performing loans and recapitalize the unhealthy banks. A recent review of the country’s banks by the IMF showed a dramatic increase in profits for the industry in 2012, while the capital adequacy ratio was above the minimum requirement of 10% and non-performing loans were below the mandated threshold of 5%5.

When judging a company’s prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it’s booking in the accounting fantasy world we call “earnings.” This is one of the first metrics I check when I’m hunting for the market’s best stocks. Today, we’ll see how it applies to EMCOR Group (NYSE: EME  ) .

  • [By Eric Volkman]

EMCOR Group (NYSE: EME  ) is growing the old-fashioned way — with the purchase of outside assets.
