Hot Clean Energy Stocks To Watch For 2014: Market Vectors Short Municipal Index ETF (SMB)

Market Vectors Short Municipal Index ETF (the Fund) seeks to replicate as closely as possible the price and yield performance of the Barclays Capital AMT-Free Short Continuous Municipal Index (the Index). The Index provides broad exposure to investment-grade municipal bonds with a nominal maturity of 1 to 6 years. To be included in the Index, bonds must be rated investment-grade (Baa3/BBB- or higher) by at least two ratings agencies: Moody’s, S&P, Fitch. If only two of the three agencies rate the security, the lower rating is used to determine index eligibility. If only one of the three agencies rates a security, the rating must be investment grade. They must have an outstanding par value of at least $7 million and be issued as part of a transaction of at least $75 million. The bonds must be fixed rate, have a dated-date within the last five years, and must be at least 1 year but less than 6 years from their maturity date. Its investment advisor is Van Eck Associates Corpor ation. Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Todd Rosenbluth]

Two others are iShares Short-Term National AMT-Free Municipal Bond ETF (SUB) and Market Vectors Short Municipal Index ETF (SMB).

The Market Vectors fund, not surprisingly, has more A bond exposure and less AA exposure than the iShares fund. However, both have lower average durations than iShares National AMT-Free Muni Bond and thus might appeal to investors concerned about the impact of higher rates.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

A consumer goods player that’s starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Amira Nature Foods (ANFI), a global provider of packaged Indian specialty rice, with sales in over 40 countries. This stock has been in play with the bulls over the last three months, with shares up 25%.

If you take a look at the chart for Amira Nature Foods, you’ll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last five months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $7.44 to its recent high of $17.41 a share. During that uptrend, shares of ANFI have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of ANFI have started to break out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels today at $15.92 to $16.25 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of ANFI within range of triggering another big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ANFI if it manages to break out above its all-time high of $17.41 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 226,387 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ANFI will set up to enter new all-time-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $25 to $27 a share.

Traders can look to buy ANFI off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $15.03 a share or around more key near-term support at $14.72 a share. One could also buy ANFI off strength once it starts to clear $17.41 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Steve Halpern: One of your recent recommendations is a company that, really, was probably unknown to most investors. It’s called Amira Nature Foods (ANFI) , which is a maker of premium rice. Can you tell us briefly about that?

Small Caps to Buy #3: Central Garden & Pet (CENTA)

In addition to its stock dropping 36% in 2013, Central Garden & Pet (CENTA) has underperformed the S&P 500 by almost 18 percentage points during the past five years while everyone and their dog — small caps, large caps, whatever — has seen impressive gains over that same period.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    Green paw
The month of May has been one to forget for shareholders of Central Garden & Pet (NASDAQ: CENT  ) (NASDAQ: CENTA  ) . The maker of pet products as well as seeds and herbicides for lawn care tumbled after it missed Wall Street’s earnings estimates for a second straight quarter. The biggest downside pressure came from its lawn care segment, which saw expenses rise as fertilizer margins fell. However, now could be the time to consider jumping on board this interesting pet/lawn care hybrid company, as it has the potential to unlock shareholder value in a number of ways.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Peter Stephens]

    The competition
In terms of competition, medical devices and diagnostics accounted for 21% of Abbott Labs’  (NYSE: ABT  )  total sales in 2013, with Becton, Dickinson  (NYSE: BDX  )  also focusing on this area. Abbott experienced a strong year in this space and delivered total sales growth of 5.9%, even when a negative currency impact of 2.4% is taken into account. A 10.8% increase in volume drove the growth, while competitive pricing had a negative impact on total sales. However, reduced prices did not translate into falling margins, as Abbott drove through significant efficiencies so as to increase operating margin from 19.2% in 2011 to 22.2% in 2013, with a more focused and leaner supply chain making a big difference.

  • [By Jim Jubak]

Fourth quarter earnings and guidance for 2014, announced on January 22, make it clear that Abbott Laboratories (ABT) is a second half story for 2014.

Steve Halpern: Now, one investment idea in the sector that you like is the area of water management. Could you tell us about Lindsay Corp. (LNN)?

  • [By Mike the PhD]

Historically the stock prices of Deere (DE) and other agricultural equipment firms and retailers like Case-New Holland (CNH), Titan Machinery (TITN), AGCO (AGCO), Tractor Supply (TSCO), Valmont (VAL), and Lindsay (LNN) have tended to closely track the price of corn. When corn prices go up, farmers tend to make more money, and they spend that money on new equipment from Deere and other firms. This relationship is especially strong for Deere and Corn, but it holds true for all of the stocks above to some extent. (Correlation coefficients between all of the stock prices above and corn are statistically significant to at least the 5% level, see my blog here for more details.)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Some of the criteria for inclusion into this index are that units must have a market capitalization of at least $500 million and trade on the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. Component partnerships will have also maintained or grown distributions quarter-over-quarter for at least one of the trailing two quarters, and they must have a policy intended to consistently maintain or increase distributions over time (i.e., no variable-distribution MLPs).

Because this is an equal-weighted, periodically rebalanced index, top holdings show the MLPs that have outperformed the overall index, while the biggest losers will be found at the bottom of the portfolio. Presently, Crosstex Energy (Nasdaq: XTEX) comprises 6.4 percent of the overall index, reflecting its nearly 30 percent gain in October. Regency Energy Partners (NYSE: RGP) has been the laggard of the group (albeit just barely), falling to 4.84 percent of the overall index makeup.

The total market cap of the ANGI is $190 billion, and the one-, three- and five-year total returns are 29 percent, 52 percent and 249 percent. The index yield is 6 percent.

Getty Images/Bloomberg/Gianluca Colla Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don’t work out quite as planned. From a CEO busted for spying on a larger rival to a satellite television provider raising the bar, here’s a rundown of the week’s smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. DISH Network (DISH) — Winner In a deal with bigger implications than you may initially think, Disney (DIS) is giving DISH Network rights to stream live and on-demand shows from ABC, Disney and ESPN. This is a truly mobile service, opening the door for DISH to begin offering a standalone Web-based service. A lot of bigger companies than DISH have tried to talk major networks and broadcasters into similar arrangements, only to be shot down. DISH succeeded because it had a bargaining chip in its ad-skipping Hopper DVR technology. DISH agreed that users of the streaming service wouldn’t be able to zap through the commercials for newer Disney shows. Modell’s Sporting Goods — Loser Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS) is filing a complaint in a New Jersey court after it caught Mitchell Modell — CEO of rival Modell’s — spying on it. The lawsuit claims that Modell posed as a Dick’s executive to gain access to private areas and learn business techniques at Dick’s. If the allegations hold up, Modell’s behavior was at the very least unethical, not to mention ironic — a sporting goods chain’s helmsman resorting to such unsportsmanlike conduct. Wouldn’t it have been easier to just hire a Dick’s executive? Zillow (Z) — Winner Speaking of the right way to pry away information from a competitor, Zillow announced on Wednesday night that it was bringing on a key executive from Realtor.com parent Move (MOVE). Gregory Bull/AP The number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes was essentially flat in January, a possible sign of a softening real estate market. The National Association of Realtors said Friday that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index inched up 0.1 last month to 95. The index has fallen 9 percent over the past 12 months as sales momentum has faded. Pending sales are a barometer of future purchases: A one- to two-month lag usually exists between a signed contract and a completed sale. Higher mortgage rates, rising prices and a tight supply of homes have restricted sales in recent months. Snowstorms across much of the country also delayed purchases. The Realtors project that sales will total 5 million this year, down from 5.1 million in 2013. Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Marcoeconomics, thinks home buying could slow further through March. “The bad news is that existing-home sales need to fall a bit further to move fully into line with the pending-sales index,” he said in a client note. The rising costs of buying a home have contributed to a slowdown in signed contracts over the past seven months. Sales of existing homes plummeted in January to the weakest pace in 18 months, the trade group said last week. Some of the price pressures will be eased if more homes come onto the market in the months ahead. One way to increase the supply is through the construction of new homes, a sector not measured by the Realtors’ indicator on sales. Purchases of new homes rose 9.6 percent in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 468,000, the Commerce Department said this week. That was the fastest pace since July 2008 and could lead to an uptick in construction. More homeowners might also choose to put their properties on the market, a possibility suggested by a decline in underwater mortgages at the end of 2013, according to a report Friday by real estate data provider Zillow (Z). Gene J. Puskar/AP WASHINGTON — U.S. home prices fell slightly in November as colder weather slowed buying, ending nine straight months of price gains. The Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index slipped 0.1 percent from October to November, partly reversing the previous monthly increase of 0.2 percent. But the index is not adjusted for seasonal variations, so the monthly decline partly reflects slower buying in the late fall as temperatures drop. “November was a good month for home prices,” said David Blitzer, chairman of the S&P Dow Jones index committee. “Prices typically weaken as we move closer to the winter.” Despite the overall decline, home values have continued to rise in many Sun Belt cities. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix have registered 20 straight months of rising prices. But home prices surged for much of 2013, driven by big gains earlier in the year. Prices have risen 13.7 percent over the past 12 months. Dallas enjoyed its strongest annual gain since 2000. And Chicago home prices climbed at their strongest annual clip since December 1988. Among the cities in the index, only Detroit prices remain below their 2000 level. The Case-Shiller index covers roughly half of U.S. homes. The index measures prices compared with those in January 2000 and creates a three-month moving average. The November figures are the latest available. Some of the improvement in the housing market since 2012 has begun to slow in recent months. Rising mortgage rates and home prices have reduced affordability, an indication that the housing market will likely expand more gradually this year. “Sellers used to seeing huge price gains month after month may feel some whiplash as that slows down,” said Stan Humphries, chief economist for the real estate firm Zillow (Z). “The housing market is still a long way from normal, but it’s getting there.” For all of 2013, sales totaled 5.09 million, the best performance since 2006, when sales climbed
