For all the efforts to regulate banks since Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. collapsed, stock investors have no more faith in U.S. financial institutions now than they did in early 2008, relative to the rest of the market.
While the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index trades at a level that’s 16.2 times reported operating earnings, up 11 percent from this time last year, banks, brokers and insurers are at 13.2 times profits, the cheapest among 10 American industries, according to data on average valuations this month compiled by Bloomberg. Even after financial shares tripled in the four-year bull market, the gap between their valuations and the S&P 500 is as wide as in early 2008.
Tighter regulation and reduced risks have failed to restore confidence that bank profits will be worth paying more for, even as analysts project earnings at financial firms will expand three times more than the S&P 500 this year. Bulls say low valuations mean there’s room f or financial shares to beat the benchmark equity index as the economy accelerates. Bears say new rules will prevent American banks from returning to their record share-price highs.

Alamy When you read something discouraging about a company you patronize or invest in, it’s easy to think there isn’t much you can do about it. But of course that’s not true. As a customer, you can simply stop giving the company your business. If you’re a shareholder, you can vote for or against various proposals for the company. Social media has changed the petition game as it has changed so many other things. Banding Together for Change By now, you’ve probably seen petitions pop up on your Facebook (FB) page. You might have even signed some. But we don’t often hear what happens next. In many cases, they work. For example, 162,150 people signed a petition protesting the name of a Jacksonville, Fla., high school, which had been named in the 1950s after a slave trader and Ku Klux Klan member, and the school board has agreed to change its name at the start of the new school year. A technology stock that’s starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Acorn Energy (ACFN), which provides digital solutions for energy infrastructure asset management. This stock has been hit hard by the sellers in 2013, with shares off sharply by 48%.
If you take a look at the chart for Acorn Energy, you’ll notice that this stock has started to spike higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $3.66 a share. This stock has also found significant buying interest over the last two months, each time it has pulled back to around $3.50 to $3.20 a share. Shares of ACFN are now quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ACFN if it manages to break out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.24 to $4.64 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 344,835 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ACFN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $5.50 to $6 a share. Any high-volume move above $6 will then put its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $6.35 to $6.68 a share into range for shares of ACFN.
Traders can look to buy ACFN off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $3.66 a share, or right around some major support at $3.21 a share. One could also buy ACFN off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

During the quarter, Perrigo (PRGO) announced strong September quarter adjusted earnings growth of 20%. We say “adjusted” because the Company incurred what we believe are non-recurring charges related to the recent purchase of Elan Corporation, which is a branded-drug company domiciled in Ireland. Upon the closing of this purchase, Perrigo has “re-domiciled” itself in Ireland, with an effective tax rate meaningfully below what they were subjected to in the U.S. Given that the Company actively pursues a strategy of inorganic growth as much as it pursues organic growth – having acquired six new businesses over the past 18 months (including Elan) – we expect that this new tax structure should make future acquisitions, particularly those U.S. based businesses, much more attractive. Further, Perrigo’s core business, which includes private-label over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceuticals and infant formula, drove much of the year-over-year growth. The Company’s unrivaled scale in manufacturing and marketing of store-branded offerings continues to enable retailers to mimic the value proposition of OTC pharmaceuticals and infant formula. This “store-brand conversion” is a multi-year trend that we expect will continue for the foreseeable future as consumers continue to become more value-conscious, yet more comfortable with store-brand quality that Perrigo helps engineer.

While the Paladin deal expands potential growth areas for the company, Endo’s business development focus remains on the heavily fragmented US market, where the company believes it can create the most value by operating acquired assets more efficiently. Management sees a robust pipeline of potential future deals and does not necessarily view other companies that benefit from a low tax rate [(Actavis (ACT), Perrigo (PRGO), Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX))] as direct competitors for the assets it is targeting. We believe business development is likely to accelerate post the Paladin deal and the re-domicile to Ireland, and view Endo as in the early stages of its consolidation strategy…And with greater than $2 billion in capacity to do deals, we expect business development to accelerate.
