As tech giant Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) continues to threaten it and its key growth metrics remain tepid, I’m back to my Pandora Media (NYSE: P ) stalking ways.
Assuming most of you aren’t familiar with my admittedly odd infatuation with Pandora Media, I’ve been following the company’s soaring share price and still-unfolding economics for some time now, especially as new competition from the likes of Apple’s iTunes Radio poses a new kind of threat to upend Pandora Media’s early lead in online streaming radio.
A March to remember for Pandora Media?
One of the most helpful ways to monitor Pandora Media’s business progress are the monthly user metrics updates it regularly provides for investors.
And in the case of Pandora’s March user metrics, there were arguably equal parts good and bad. Broadly speaking, Pandora users are utilizing the service more, which increases the number of total hours to which Pandora can serve ads. However, the pace at which it’s acquiring new users is slowing, bringing Pandora Media alternatives like iTunes Radio into the discussion once again.

Another potential earnings short-squeeze trade idea is cloud services player J2 Global (JCOM), which is set to release its numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect J2 Global to report revenue $130.43 million on earnings of 71cents per share.
The current short interest as a percentage of the float for J2 Global is extremely high at 20.6%. That means that out of the 43.70 million shares in the tradable float, 9.01 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they’re looking for, then shares of JCOM could easily explode higher post-earnings.
From a technical perspective, JCOM is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares moving higher from its low of $38.07 to its recent high of $56.24 a share. During that uptrend, shares of JCOM have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of JCOM within range of triggering a major breakout trade post-earnings.
If you’re in the bull camp on JCOM, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above its 52-week high at $56.42 a share (or Tuesday’s intraday high if higher) on high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 292,457 shares. If that breakout hits, then JCOM will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $65 to $75 a share.
I would simply avoid JCOM or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops below some key near-term support levels at $54 to $53 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then JCOM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its ne

Judging from the company it’s keeping Green Automotive Co. (OTCMKTS:GACR) may have just made its way into the upper echelon of small cap stock opportunities. The electric car company joins Elite Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OTCBB:ELTP), Amarantus Bioscience Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AMBS), and only three other companies as Wall-Street.com’s “Best 6 Stocks” for January of 2014. As one of the top information resources for investors – particularly in terms of information regarding small and micro cap stocks – being named among the site’s top pick is an accolade for AMBS, ELTP, and GACR. Even more impressive is that Green Automotive Co. was the only consumer-goods name among those six. Amarantus Bioscience Holdings and Elite Pharmaceuticals are biotechnology names… an industry that can and often does attract a lot of attention just by the nature of the business. The other three names making the “Best 6” list were an energy explorer, a power-management technology manufacturer, and presc ription/medical food producer. For an electric car manufacturer to make the list speaks quite highly of GACR.

Exactly one month ago today I penned some bullish thoughts on Elite Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OTCBB:ELTP). If you’re familiar with the company – or a regular reader of this site – then you may know why that sounds a little “off.” See, at the time, ELTP shares were falling rather quickly, giving up all the gains they had made just a few days before. Almost needless to say, my premise was not a well received one. Let’s just say I received some “colorful disagreements” by being optimistic about the biopharma company.

BPZ Resources Inc. (NYSE: BPZ) may be a small cap investor’s dream stock to buy. Its first well drilled in the Corvina field since 2010 was spudded in late July and likely will take about 12 weeks. It will take another week or so to achieve a stabilized flow rate before results are reported to the market, which means it will not expect to hear anything until November. The Raymond James price target for the stock is $4.50, the same as the consensus target.
