That’s put the yellow metal very much in the bear market category. However, that bear may be growling a little bit louder as the second half of the year continues.


Major importer, India has set forth a new basket of rules designed to slowdown gold buying in the nation. Given its status as one of key pieces of demand for physical gold, gold bugs could be in for a world more hurt in the short run.

    Jonathan Leibson/PMC/Getty Images SodaStream (SODA) has been one of Wall Street’s bigger disappointments over the past year, but shareholders may finally be catching a break. Sources were telling several different international publications last week that the company behind the namesake carbonated beverage maker is in talks to be acquired for at least $40 a share. The buyout would come as a welcome relief for investors who have seen the stock fall from its sudsy peak of $77.80 last summer to below $30 this summer. Inventory woes and cascading margins have slammed SodaStream, and investors know that soda is no good when the fizz is gone. Bottling Up Optimism Buyout chatter heated up last week when Israeli business publication The Marker reported that a British investor was in negotiations to acquire SodaStream in an $840 million deal that would swap common stock for $40 a share in cash. It seemed like just the latest in a long line of empty acquisitive talk, but then things began heating up in the U.K. media channels. The Independent reported that beer behemoths Diageo (DEO) and SABMiller (SBMRF) are considering an offer for SodaStream. The Times apparently has another source naming private equity firm KKR as an investor willing to shell out $46 a share for SodaStream. All of these conflicting rumors would seem to be turning this buyout symphony into a cacophony, and conspiracy theorists would argue that SodaStream itself could be behind this in an effort to smoke out a potential suitor. However, you don’t often see three different international publications talking up SodaStream as a purchase. Pop a Cap Off We’ve been here before.     After the close today, Danaher announced that Tom Joyce will be appointed as President and CEO of the company effective Sept 9, 2014, replacing Larry Culp, who will transition to a senior advisory role and serve until March 1, 2016. This is a change from the prior plan, which had called for Culp to step aside in March 2015.

    While plenty of debate will ensue, we believe that a pulled forward transition process is a net positive sign, showing a sense of urgency on breaking the malaise around an under-utilized balance sheet with a potentially accelerated timeline on strategic moves to create value. Even if there is less meaning near term, there is no change to business quality, best in class culture and well above average balance sheet resources—keys to our OW rating.

    Investors in Danaher  (NYSE: DHR  ) saw the company deliver a disappointing set of second-quarter results that caused the stock to drop notably. In fact, as of today, it’s pretty much flat on a six-month basis.     Body Central (BODY) operates apparel stores and also conducts direct business via catalogues and Web site. This stock closed up 3.8% to $3.52 in Tuesday’s trading session.

    From a technical perspective, BODY trended higher here right above some near-term support at $3.21 with above-average volume. This move pushed shares of BODY into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $3.50. This move is also coming off oversold territory, since BODY’s current relative strength index reading is 29.89. Oversold can always get more oversold, but it’s also an area where a stock can experience a powerful bounce from.


     

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in BODY as long as it’s trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.21 or at $3.09 and then once it sustains a move or close above Tuesday’s high of $3.55 with volume that hits near or above 421,188 shares. If we get that move soon, then BODY will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4 to $4.50.

The improvement came during what could have been a difficult month for the U.S. economy, with a partial government shutdown that lasted 16 days and a narrowly averted default on the U.S. government’s debt, which could have rattled financial markets. “With what happened in the last two months, it’s amazing how strong this market has been,” said Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management. The Institute for Supply Management reported that its manufacturing index increased to 56.4, the highest level since April 2011. That was better than the 55.1 figure economists were expecting, according financial data provider FactSet. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) rose 69.80 points, or 0.5 percent, to 15,615.55. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index (^GPSC) rose 5.10 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,761.64. The Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) rose 2.34 points, or 0.1 percent, to 3,922.04. Energy stocks lagged the market after Chevron (CVX) reported that its third-quarter income fell 6 percent, missing analysts’ estimates, due to weakness in the company’s oil refining business. Chevron fell $1.95, or 1.6 percent, to $118.01. The energy sector was also weighed down by a drop in the price of oil. Crude oil fell $1.77, or 1.8 percent, to $94.61 a barrel. The positive start to this month’s trading comes after a strong October for the stock market. The S&P 500 closed at a record high seven times during the month, most recently on Tuesday. It ended October with a gain of 4.5 percent. However, some investors have expressed skepticism that stocks can keep up this rapid pace pace heading into the last two months of the year.
