Morningstar (MORN) released the nominees for the 2013 U.S. Fund Manager of the Year awards on Monday. It will name the outstanding fund managers in five categories on Jan. 15.

The research group says it nominates managers based on “impressive performance,” as well as “excellent long-term risk-adjusted returns” and being “good stewards of fund shareholders’ capital.”

“We have an esteemed list of nominees for this year’s awards, filled with fund managers who have adeptly steered shareholder capital and outperformed their peers over the long term, in addition to attaining strong returns in 2013,” said Scott Burns, Morningstar’s director of global fund research, in a press release.

Though PIMCO did make it to the list of fixed-income nominees, Bill Gross, who Morningstar named fixed-income manager of the decade in 2010, and the PIMCO Total Return Fund (PTTRX) didn’t make the cut.

Managers with Dodge and Cox, as usual, are named in several categories. And a team with Morgan Stanley (MS) also is listed.

Joe Raedle/Getty Images | Rumors about the demise of U.S. gasoline demand have been greatly exaggerated. Until late 2013, most energy observers forecast the world’s most reliably gas-guzzling market to consume less fuel this year. What was once thought to be a structural decline in demand, however, has proven more durable than expected. As the summer driving season nears, retail gas remains stubbornly lodged near $4 a gallon. According to the Energy Information Administration, gas prices rose for 12 straight weeks through late April, and were 20 cents a gallon higher than the same point last year. So what gives? “The world’s not swimming in crude or gasoline yet,” said Francisco Blanch, commodities strategist at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, in an interview. “Despite all the crude and gasoline production in the U.S., international markets are not tagging along.” International developments matter, analysts say, because gas prices are linked to internationally priced Brent crude. Turmoil in Ukraine and spotty supply from the perennially unstable Middle East has conspired to keep oil above $100 a barrel. In a research note this week, analysts at Goldman Sachs (GS) called crude oil fundamentals “stable but tight,” adding that most developed-economy stockpiles “remain at low levels” amid lower-than-expected output from hotspots like Libya and Iraq. That backdrop explains why prices at the pump have defied the gravitational pull of a litany of mitigating factors such as a more fuel-efficient U.S. car fleet, rising domestic production and a still-fragile recovery that should blunt demand. Bank of America-Merrill (BAC) points out that domestic oil and gas production has driven gasoline imports to near zero, while the U.S. is churning out nearly 10 million barrels a day. Despite all this, there has been little relief at the pump due largely to factors outside America’s control. The International Energy Agency said in its most recent report that OPEC will

O’Reilly Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:ORLY), AutoZone, Inc. (NYSE:AZO), The Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE:PBY), and Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (NYSE:AAP) may all technically be in the same business, but they’re hardly in the same proverbial boat. In fact, their performances – sales and earnings – are oddly disparate. Which among PBY, AZO, ORLY, and AAP are the winners and the losers, and perhaps more important, why? The question can at least partially be answered by a chart, and what the chart can’t tell us about each, the narrative can.

The present perspective seems bright for such aftermarket service providers. However, these two are entirely different from aftermarket retailers such as Advance Auto Parts (AAP). Let us take a look at the present aftermarket scenario and its prospects.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Another under-$10 wireless telecom player that’s starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Partner Communications (PTNR), a telecommunications company, provides cellular and fixed-line telecommunication services in Israel. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 29%.

If you take a look at the chart for Partner Communications, you’ll notice that this stock has been trending sideways for the last month, with shares moving between $7.28 on the downside and $7.96 on the upside. Shares of PTRN are bucking the overall market weakness today as the stock starts to move within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PTNR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.80 to $7.85 a share and then once it clears its 52-week high at $7.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 107,303 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PTNR will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $10 to $12.20 a share.

Traders can look to buy PTNR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $7.38 to $7.28, or below its 50-day at $6.97 a share. One can also buy PTNR off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

True, CSOD has competition. But most of the players are mega companies like Oracle (ORCL) and IBM (IBM), which are far from nimble. Besides, the company has the advantage of being solely focused on talent management and its platform is available for companies of all sizes.

On Wednesday, Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) will release its quarterly report, and once again, investors expect that the networking giant will see its revenue drop. So far, Cisco has been able to keep its profits relatively stable despite the declines in sales, but with ongoing competition from IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) and Oracle (NYSE: ORCL  ) to capture enterprise customers and offer them the widest possible range of products and services — including those related to networking — the question Cisco Systems faces is whether it can sustain its leadership role in networks while expanding to serve a greater portion of its clients’ overall IT needs.
