Hot Canadian Stocks To Invest In 2014

Of all the things you can say about the world of finance this year, it wasn’t boring.

Looking back at the best and worst of Wall Street 2013, we’ve had record stock market highs, hyped up IPOs, activist investors gone wild, and red-faced moments for some prominent CEOs.

Some of it was sad, most of it was entertaining, but none of it should have distracted you from making money.

We here at Money Morning have created some very special awards to commemorate some of the most striking developments of 2013.

The 2013 Awards for Best and Worst of Wall Street Best Hedge Fund Manager Smackdown: Icahn vs. Ackman
Back in January, Bill Ackman, head of Pershing Square Capital management, went on CNBC to defend himself against a verbal attack that iconic hedge fund manager Carl Icahn had made the day before on Bloomberg TV criticizing Ackman’s “holier than thou” short position on Herbalife. After the first segment, Icahn called in live to respond, and the fireworks began. Captivated traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange shouted “Whoa!” with each verbal counterpunch. Some of the highlights:

Icahn: He is like the crybaby in the schoolyard.
Ackman: Carl Icahn does not have a good reputation for being a handshake guy.
Icahn: I appreciate, Bill, that you called me a great investor. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for you.
Ackman: I think that Carl either has a very, very bad memory or he had trouble with the truth. [After losing a lawsuit to me], he called me up and literally said, “Bill, we can be friends now.” I simply said to him, “Look, Ca rl, you are no friend of mine.”
Icahn: That’s nonsense. I never said that I want to be friends with you, Bill.
Ackman: OK, Carl.
Icahn: You said to me, you’d like to be friends so that we could invest together.
Ackman: OK, Carl. You think I want to invest with you?
Icahn: I wouldn’t do business with you if you were the last man on Earth.

Talisman Energy Inc., an upstream oil and gas company, engages in the exploration, development, production, transportation, and marketing of crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids. It primarily operates in North America, the North Sea, and southeast Asia. The company was founded in 1925 and is headquartered in Calgary, Canada.

Energy bet may not have paid off: The funds plowed over two billion dollars into Whiting Petroleum (WLL), Valero Energy Corporation (VLO, Fortune 500), Talisman Energy (TLM), and Cameron International (CAM, Fortune 500).

  • [By Arjun Sreekumar]

In Pennsylvania, for instance, several hundred wells have been drilled but not completed because the takeaway capacity to get their production to market simply isn’t there. Several operators have been forced to drastically reduce their rig counts in the region. For instance, both EXCO Resources (NYSE: XCO  ) and Talisman Energy (NYSE: TLM  ) have just one rig each remaining in the Marcellus.

  • [By Chris Ciovacco]

Sometimes the most attractive energy assets aren’t found in the ground but listed on the stock exchange. Billionaire businessman Carl Icahn is one investor seeing value in energy companies. The hedge fund manager recently announced his purchase of 60 million shares in the Canadian oil and gas producer, Talisman Energy (TLM). Icahn has built up a nearly 6 percent stake in the Calgary-based energy producer, worth a whopping $300 million. Even though the company has been a perennial underperformer, after Icahn’s tweet, the stock climbed to the highest level in more than a year.

Hot Canadian Stocks To Invest In 2014: (AUQ)

AuRico Gold Inc. engages in the exploration, development, and production of gold and silver projects and properties in Canada, Mexico, and Australia. Its principal property includes the Ocampo mine covering approximately 15,000 hectares located in Chihuahua State. The company was formerly known as Gammon Gold Inc. and changed its name to AuRico Gold Inc. in June 2011. AuRico Gold Inc. was founded in 1986 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

AuRico Gold (NYSE: AUQ  ) plunged 44%, having posted some disappointing results lately, and is also suffering from a competitive disadvantage, with its costs above those of some peers. On the plus side, though, the company recently initiated a dividend, which now yields about 2.8%.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Endeavour has also suffered company-specific issues. In January, the company lowered its production guidance for its key El Cubo mine. As Motley Fool contributor Christopher Barker noted at the time, former mine owner AuRico Gold (NYSE: AUQ  ) did a poor job of managing and operating El Cubo, leaving Endeavour with a massive opportunity to refurbish and expand the mine. Yet at least in the short run, the company still faces a big challenge there, especially in light of a recent fatality of a contractor employee at the mine last month.

This series, brought to you by Yahoo! Finance, looks at which upgrades and downgrades make sense, and which ones investors should act on. Today, our headlines feature an upgrade for Thomson Reuters Reuters (NYSE: TRI  ) , a new buy rating for Novavax (NASDAQ: NVAX  ) — but for Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP  ) , a downgrade. Let’s get that bad news out of the way first.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

It’s been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don’t worry if you’ve missed out on the move — TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that’s been setting up in shares.

Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that’s formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it’s getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it’s time to be a buyer.

TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday’s session, but it’s a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today’s session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.
