Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

$8 billion engineering simulation software maker Ansys (ANSS) is looking tradable too after spending most of the last five months in a sideways slump. Even though ANSS’ price action hasn’t exactly shown outstanding momentum, the bias is definitely on the side of sellers right now. Here’s why.

Ansys is currently forming a rectangle pattern, a consolidation setup that’s formed by a pair of horizontal price levels that basically “box in” shares of the stock. In Ansys, the rectangle is formed by resistance above shares at $90 and support down at $84. The breakout signal works just like the ones in BYI and SRCL – a move through the $90 level is the buy signal for shares of Ansys.

Strictly speaking, a move through $84 support is just as strong of a sell signal as the move through $90 is to buy. But the moves leading up to the rectangle pattern have a lot to say about how these setups typically resolve. Since ANSS started consolidating after a move up, a bullish breakout is the likelier outcome here. Either way, don’t try to predict what’s going to happen in shares; just be ready to react to it.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

We’re seeing the exact same setup in shares of simulation software maker ANSYS (ANSS). Like CSC, ANSYS is sandwiched between a horizontal price ceiling above shares around $90 a share and a similar horizontal floor at $83.50 a share. From here, the trading signal comes on a breakout outside of the channel.

Whenever you’re looking at any technical price pattern, it’s critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Rectangles, triangles, and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what’s going on in a stock, but they’re not the reason it’s tradable – instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $90 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it’s a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That’s what makes a breakout above it so significant – the move means buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level. Don’t be early on this trade.

Cisco Systems dropped 11% following its disappointing earnings report last night. Missing revenue estimates for the October quarter didn’t distinguish Cisco from a number of other suffering tech giants lately, but guidance for a steep 9% plunge in year-over-year revenue in the current quarter showed just how serious the situation is for the networking giant. As Fool contributor Anders Bylund noted earlier today, rival Alcatel-Lucent’s (NYSE: ALU  ) deal to sell networking equipment to Chinese wireless giant China Mobile might have represented a missed opportunity for Cisco.

Best Tech Stocks To Buy For 2015: Beamz Interactive Inc (BZIC)

Beamz Interactive, Inc., incorporated on May 25, 2001, develops an interactive laser controller technology that can be used in a range of music, game, therapy, education, senior care, lighting and consumer applications. The Company’s commercial products include Beamz Player and Beamz Pro. By connecting the Beamz Player to a personal computer (PC) and installing the included software, the user can play a range of digitized musical instruments by simply interrupting one or more laser beams with their hands, thereby creating great music in conjunction with a background rhythm track of original, popular, disc jockey (DJ) and children’s songs across numerous music genres (including Jazz, Blues, Hip Hop, Rock, Classical, Latin). In each song the user can select up to 12 different instruments, music clips and sound effects that are paired with a background rhythm track, amounting to hundreds of instruments to choose from across all songs in the Beamz music library.

BeamzPlayer software makes it easy to make great sounding music in minutes by following the diagram of the Beamz Player on the screen of the attached computer, which allows the user to identify which laser beam controls different instruments. Beamz songs are set up to be regardless of how they are played and the music samples assigned to a laser beam offer more complexity, often with several notes, chords and/or series of music samples controlled by touching one of the laser beams. The Company has commercialized several products that use the Beamz interactive laser controller technology for music making and music-controller related products. These products are interactive music systems that combine laser controller hardware and various versions of interactive music software, including mapping software applications that enable the Beamz laser controller hardware to be used with software applications offered by other companies relating to mixing/DJ, lighting controls and m usic creation/production applications.

The Com! pany’s hardware product offering consists of three product lines: the Beamz Player consumer product family, the Beamz DJ and Beamz Pro product family, and the Beamz Education, Special Needs, and Physical Rehabilitation product family (Beamz Products). The Beamz Player and Beamz Pro hardware may also be used as a general laser controller for many other purposes, such as lighting, games, music production, and other applications.

CNET said it expects to see ZTE focus on premium quality smartphones at the Mobile World Congress at the end of February this year. This would be a departure from the company’s previous concentration on mid-range priced phones offered by smaller carriers like Cricket Wireless, U.S. Cellular, (NYSE: USM) and Aio Wireless.

Michael Sohn/APSprint CEO Dan Hesse Sprint has been ranked last among U.S. cellphone service operators in a customer satisfaction survey by the influential Consumer Reports organization, scoring dismal marks for measures ranging from voice to 4G reliability. No-frills carrier Consumer Cellular received the highest overall score of 88 out of 100, followed by U.S. Cellular (USM) with 75. Sprint received the lowest score of 59, faring the worst in terms of value, voice, text and 4G services. The annual ratings were based on a September survey of 58,399 cellphone service subscribers by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, which publishes widely followed surveys and reviews of everything from cars to refrigerators. In last year’s survey, Sprint (S) trailed only Verizon Wireless among the four major carriers. Verizon Wireless (VZ) (VOD) ranked highest again this year with a score of 71. T-Mobile US (TMUS) rated 65 and AT&T (T) 64, according to survey results released Thursday. The rankings are based on ratings for voice, text and 4G, taking into account the occurrence of problems and adjusted for frequency of use. Sprint has been revamping its network after years of customer losses. The company, which is 80 percent owned by SoftBank, warned in October that customer defections would remain high in coming quarters. The company reported a decline in third-quarter revenue as it lost more subscribers than expected following the shutdown of its older network. “Our latest cell service satisfaction survey revealed a somewhat precipitous decline by Sprint that shuffled the rankings of the major standard service providers,” Glenn Derene, Electronics Content Development Team Leader for Consumer Reports, said in a statement.

Considering I’m tired of saying it, there’s a good chance you’re tired of hearing it. Yet, if it needs to be said, then it needs to be said – Ariad Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARIA) is acting like it wants to go higher, and taking that hint in the recent past has paid off well, even if only temporarily.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

If you’re frustrated by Ariad Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARIA), you’re probably not the only one. The stock’s been maddening to trade since October, stopping in its tracks the minute a trend just seems to start, and then starting a trend out of nowhere (both up and down). Yet, there’s a good case to be made just to buy ARIA and stick with it, and ride out the hot and cold phases as they materialize. Indeed, if history repeats itself, now may be a great time to wade in.

I’m exactly 0.0% surprising that Ariad Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARIA) shares are taking off today, to the tune of 25%. The only thing I’m surprised about it that it took this long for the brewing surge from ARIA to materialize.
