Biotech in general has been one of the market’s hottest sectors this year thanks to plenty of mostly good news along with new IPOs while small cap biotech stocks Delcath Systems (NASDAQ: DCTH), ZIOPHARM Oncology Inc (NASDAQ: ZIOP), Recro Pharma (NASDAQ: REPH), TetraLogic Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: TLOG) and TNI BioTech (OTCMKTS: TNIB) have also produced their share of news this week or in recent weeks. Just consider the following:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Cancer drug investors who have been disappointed in recent results from shares of Clovis Oncology Inc. (NASDAQ:CLVS) or Nuvilex Inc. (OTCMKTS:NVLX) lately may want to take a look at ZIOPHARM Oncology Inc. (NASDAQ:ZIOP) as a replacement for either of those first two stocks. CLVS is down about 16% for the week on a less-than-flattering write-up in a Bloomberg publication, and NVLX has moved under a pair of key moving averages this week because, well, for no specific reason, but broadly because the recent wave of compelling news is already losing its potency, with most of that upside already being priced into shares (and then some) before it became official.

Big competitors for BCE include Rogers Communications (RCI) and Telus (TU), though it also faces niche players such as Public Mobile, Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. Until recently, there was buzz that Verizon (VZ) might enter the market by buying up the latter two, though VZ apparently scrapped plans for Canadian expansion until 2014.

Continuing with its practice of raising its dividend payment every year, Canadian telecom Telus  (NYSE: TU  )  announced today its second-quarter dividend of $0.34 Canadian per share. Last quarter the payout was $0.32 Canadian per share. That’s a 6.25% increase.

Last week, Canadian cable company TELUS (NYSE: TU  ) CEO Darren Entwistle said that Netflix might be as much of an opportunity as a competitor. The company could sell rebranded Netflix services under its own banner to get a leg up on its mostly larger head-to-head competitors. Pairing with local cable providers is a strategy that Netflix hasn’t considered (at least not publicly), but it’s a wrinkle that’s worth keeping a watchful eye on.

Today, BABB remains (0.00%) +0.000 at $.800 thus far (ref. google finance July 11, 2013).

For the quarter ended May 31, 2013, BAB had revenues of $658,000 and net income of $125,000, or $0.02 per share, versus revenues of $826,000 and net income of $267,000, or $0.04 per share, for the same quarter last year. For the quarter ended May 31, 2012, the Company received a $171,000 payment for the buyout of the Franchise Agreement from its Minot, ND franchisee so the franchisee could pursue its other business interests associated with the local energy boom. In that acceptance by the Company of the voluntary buyout is unique, no such transaction occurred nor was such income earned in the quarter ended May 31, 2013.

Cars come to mind, and you could probably get away with owning a common car dealer like Toyota (TMC). The problem with this approach, though, is that auto manufacturers are economically sensitive and can have really bad years. That’s why I go one level deeper to what I call “infrastructure” plays, which in this case means auto parts.

As pointed out by Warren Buffett, the percentage of total market cap (TMC) relative to the U.S. GNP is “probably the best single measure of where valuations stand at any given moment.”

Best Safest Companies To Own For 2014: Northern Oil and Gas Inc.(NOG)

Northern Oil and Gas, Inc., an independent energy company, engages in the acquisition, exploration, exploitation, development, and production of crude oil and natural gas properties in the Williston Basin Bakken play, the United States. As of June 30, 2011, the company?s principal assets included approximately 158,046 net acres located in the northern region of the United States; and 439 gross wells. Northern Oil and Gas, Inc. is based in Wayzata, Minnesota.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Sean Williams]

    Northern (under)exposure
No one ever said being an oil and gas driller was easy. Costs to build out a company, drill, and hire a workforce are huge, and if spot oil, liquid natural gas, and natural gas prices don’t cooperate relatively quickly, then the chances of success can be quite low. However, I think the market isn’t giving nearly enough credit to small-time Bakken shale player Northern Oil & Gas (NYSEMKT: NOG  ) , which has all the tools essential for long-term profits.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    4. Northern Oil & Gas (NYSEMKT: NOG  )
Bakken-focused Northern Oil & Gas delivered oil production growth of 93.4% last year. The company spent about $485 million to drill a total of 48.3 net wells, which delivered that production growth. What’s unique about Northern is that it typically just takes a small, non-operated stake in each well, as the company actually participated in the drilling of 563 gross wells last year. That spreads its risk, as one dry hole won’t have much of an impact on its returns. The company plans to continue to grow its oil production this year, as it’s currently working with its partners to drill 152 gross (12.2 net) wells to keep oil production growing.

  • [By Bret Jensen]

Northern Oil & Gas (NOG) is another slightly bigger (~$1B market capitalization) Bakken player that should benefit from the same well completion techniques that Whiting is currently pioneering. The company is growing revenues in the mid-teens and analysts expect this to continue in FY2014 and beyond.

Best Safest Companies To Own For 2014: Star Bulk Carriers Corp.(SBLK)

Star Bulk Carriers Corp. operates as a shipping company providing seaborne transportation solutions in the dry bulk sector worldwide. Its vessels transport major bulks, which include iron ore, coal, and grain; and minor bulks, such as bauxite, fertilizers, and steel products. The company was incorporated in 2006 and is based in Athens, Greece.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

It’s certainly no Safe Bulkers, Inc. (NYSE:SB) or Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ:SBLK), in terms or market cap or revenue. In fact, even with the drybulk shipping industry it’s a somewhat obscure name. Yet, FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE) may well be the stock with the most near-term potential upside, now that it’s gotten over a key technical hump.

  • [By Igor Greenwald]

Last month, Oaktree Capital (OAK), managed by another distressed investing icon, Howard Marks, disclosed a huge 21.9% stake in Star Bulk Carriers (SBLK).

  • [By James E. Brumley]

I’ll warn you now that if you’re a fan or shareholder of Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ:SBLK), then you’re not going to like what you’re about to read. Before you fly off into a tirade of “colorful” descriptions of me, however, know that this is neither a judgment call on the company itself, nor a long-term outlook. It’s simply a trading-based observation of hints that SBLK has dropped today. Fair enough? OK, let’s dig in.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Star Bulk Carriers (SBLK) provides worldwide transportation of drybulk commodities through its vessel-owning subsidiaries for a range of customers and minor bulk cargoes including iron ore, coal, grain, cement and fertilizer. This stock closed up 7.9% at $10.58 in Monday’s trading session.

    Monday’s Volume: 243,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 64,367

    Volume % Change: 228%

From a technical perspective, SBLK jumped sharply higher here right above some near-term support at $9.47 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last two months and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $5.37 to its recent high of $11.53. During that move, shares of SBLK have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of SBLK within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if SBLK manages to take out its 52-week high at $11.53 and then once it clears some past resistance at $11.98 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SBLK as long as it’s trending above near-term support at $9.47 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 64,367 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SBLK will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at $14 to $15.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

A week and a half ago, not to mention a couple of months ago, I suggested Superconductor Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCON) was a budding bullish play worthy of your attention. I get the suspicion that while more than a handful of traders read my take, the vast majority of the people who read that commentary weren’t as impressed with (SCON) as I was. That’s fine. Yet, being a diehard – and perhaps being a glutton for punishment – this is one of those trading ideas I can’t let go of, mostly because Superconductor Technologies refuse to give up. Thing is, the stock’s given me some new bullish fodder to use since the last look back on January 6th.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It’s not the kind of thing anybody would have expected to hear, or read, five months ago, but Superconductor Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCON) is close to becoming one of the market’s best bullish short-term bets. Yes, we’re talking about the same Superconductor Technologies that plunged from $2.57 to $1.66 in August – hitting new lows in the process – on news that the company was issuing $12 million worth of new stock… right in front of news that SCON booked another significant quarterly loss.  By November, the disaster’s final tally was officially recorded – an 82% plunge in the prior quarter’s revenue for SCON. As they say though, nothing lasts forever. That includes a malaise that can hold a stock down. Indeed, it’s looking like SCON is about to make an explosive move higher.

Best Safest Companies To Own For 2014: Sprott Physical Gold Trust (PHYS)

Sprott Physical Gold Trust (the Trust) is a closed-end mutual fund trust. The Trust was created to invest and hold substantially all of its assets in physical gold bullion. The Trust seeks to provide an exchange-traded investment alternative for investors interested in holding physical gold bullion. The Trust invests primarily in long-term holdings of unencumbered, fully allocated, physical gold bullion and does not speculate with regard to short-term changes in gold prices. Sprott Asset Management LP (the Manager) is the manager and RBC Dexia Investor Services Trust (RBC Dexia), a trust company, is the trustee of the Trust.

The Trust employs two custodians. The Royal Canadian Mint (Mint) acts as custodian for the Trust’s physical gold bullion, pursuant to a precious metals storage agreement between the Manager, for and on behalf of the Trust, and the Mint, to which it refers as the precious metals storage agreement. RBC Dexia acts as custodian of the Trust’s assets other than physical gold bullion pursuant to the trust agreement. As of December 31, 2010, the Trust held 90% of its total net assets in physical gold bullion in London Good Delivery bar form. The Trust does not invest in gold certificates or other financial instruments that represent gold or that may be exchanged for gold.

In making investments on behalf of the Trust, the Manager is subject to certain investment and operating restrictions, to which the Trust refers to as the Investment and Operating Restrictions. The Investment and Operating Restrictions provide that the Trust will invest in and hold a minimum of 90% of the total net assets of the Trust in physical gold bullion in London Good Delivery bar form and hold no more than 10% of the total net assets of the Trust, at the discretion of the Manager, in physical gold bullion (in London Good Delivery bar form or otherwise), gold coins, debt obligations of or guaranteed by the Government of Canada o r a province of Canada or by the Government of the United St! ates or a state thereof.

The Trust will invest in short-term commercial paper obligations of a corporation or other person whose short-term commercial paper is rated R-1 (or its equivalent, or higher) by Dominion Bond Rating Service Limited or its successors, or assigns or F1 (or its equivalent, or higher) by Fitch Ratings or its successors, or assigns or A-1 (or its equivalent, or higher) by Standard & Poor’s or its successors, or assigns or P-1 (or its equivalent, or higher) by Moody’s Investor Service or its successors, or assigns, interest-bearing accounts and short-term certificates of deposit issued or guaranteed by a Canadian chartered bank or trust company, money market mutual funds, short-term government debt or short-term investment grade corporate debt, or other short-term debt obligations approved by the Manager from time to time. The Trust will not purchase, sell or hold derivatives.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Daniel Gibbs]

    Gold trusts and ETFs
One of the easiest ways to profit off of a rising gold price is to buy shares in one of the various exchange-traded gold trusts. These are essentially closed-end funds that own physical gold bullion located in a vault. Each share of the trust represents a fractional ownership share of the physical bullion in the vault. Thus, these trusts could be an easy way to purchase gold exposure directly on an exchange. One example of a trust like this is the Sprott Physical Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: PHYS  ) .

  • [By Boris Mikanikrezai]

As India and China are the largest buyers of gold, physical demand (PHYS) out of Asia has been moderated in the recent weeks for different reasons.

  • [By Daniel Cook]

If you are partial to Canadians, or just a little nervous about securing your gold, Sprott Physical Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: PHYS  ) is another viable option. Gold is stored at the Royal Canadian Mint, and I think monthly dusting and shining of the bars is included in Sprott’s 0.42% management fee.

Going forward I will be looking to add investments on my watchlist and trim other positions. It will be interesting to see how an overweight commodity portfolio will perform relative to the rest of the market.
