She suggested that investors should diversify their portfolio instead of investing all the money into one scheme. Further, one should have proper balance of equity and debt exposure, she added.
Below is the edited transcript of Gupta’s interview with CNBC-TV18. Also watch the accompanying video.
Q: Investor can invest Rs 2,000 per month. How should he allocate his money? He is 41 years old, his goal is Rs 3 lakh in a time frame of only about 1 year. His reason is wealth creation, he has some insurance and LIC money back ULIP policy with premium of Rs 12300. He has some investments in equities as well.
A: With Rs 2,000 a month, Rs 3 lakh in a year is a very aggressive goal, he definitely needs to add a larger corpus. I have three pieces of advice for him. One, from what I know of his current investments, he has got four HDFC funds. So, he has got all his money concentrated with HDFC as a fund house. I would highly recommend he diversifies that to other fund houses like ICICI and Birla.

Look out AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:ABBV), and Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD), you may want to look over your shoulder as well. There’s a new immunology player coming to town, and its name is CEL-SCI Corporation (NYSEMKT:CVM). Yes, AbbVie may be the name behind blockbuster drug Humira – with nearly $10 billion in sales in 2012 – while Gilead Sciences is saving HIV patients’ lives with immunological therapies Stribild and Complera. But, small cap company CEL-SCI may be closer to launching its own immunology drug sooner than most investors realize.

Names like Amgen, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) and CEL-SCI Corporation (NYSEMKT:CVM) may have pioneered and even mainstreamed the idea of cancer immunology, but the nature of the branch of biotechnology means any company could send CEL-SCI or Amgen back-pedaling. See, it’s not about size or deep pockets in the world of biotech anymore. It’s about know-how and an idea, which can just as easily be discovered and developed by a small company as they can be a large company. That’s why AMGN and CVM at least need to keep a close eye on budding immunology competitor TNI Biotech Inc. (OTCMKTS:TNIB).

FDUS is one of the few BDCs to consistently grow its NAV on a quarterly basis over the last two years. This is because most BDCs are regulated investment companies (“RIC”) required to distribute at least 90% of capital gains, dividends and interest to shareholders to avoid taxation at the corporate level and 98% of net investment income to avoid paying a 4% excise tax. Excluding American Capital (ACAS) which converted from a RIC to a Subchapter C and does not pay a dividend, only a few BDCs have been able to pay a healthy dividend while increasing value per share – as discussed in “Triangle Capital: Is It Priced For Total Return?” including Main Street Capital (MAIN) and Triangle Capital (TCAP).

Of course, a great bet also involves many risks. Even though LCD technology became very popular in these last few years, both in TV screens and computer monitors, we should never miss the fact that technological markets are often exposed to products becoming obsolete due to the development of new, more efficient technology. Without going any further, it’s easy to recall the plasma display panel (PDP) fiasco, an apparently promising market in the 1990s and early 2000s but quickly replaced by LCDs (by 2008 LCDs sell 21.1 million units, almost 10 times PDP sales on the same year). Even Panasonic Corporation (PCRFF) announced it will interrupt production of PDP on 2014.
