BBT’s Earnings in Brief
BBT posted first quarter earnings of $501 million, or 69 cents per share, up from $210 million, or 29 cents per share, a year ago. Analysts expected to see earnings of 70 cents per share. While it’s not obvious from the chart, you can separate these institutions into three different buckets. The first bucket concerns the most widely discussed too-big-to-fail banks: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo. Then comes the unofficial too-big-to-fail lenders (those with assets in excess of $50 billion and thus subject to the Federal Reserve’s more stringent stress test process). This group contains U.S. Bank (NYSE: USB ) , PNC Financial (NYSE: PNC ) , and BB&T Bank (NYSE: BBT ) , among others. And the final group encompasses lesser-known banks like First Niagara Financial (NASDAQ: FNFG ) and People’s United Financial (NASDAQ: PBCT ) with between $20 billion and $50 billion in assets.

Haruyoshi Yamaguchi/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesCarlos Ghosn, chairman and chief executive officer of Nissan Motor Co. YOKOHAMA, Japan — Nissan expects profit to grow at a slower rate than analysts forecast this year and an operating margin that would be the lowest of its compatriots, weighed down by the costs of aggressive expansion. Japan’s second-largest automaker expects a 4.1 percent rise in net profit for the year to next March, boosted by sales of low-priced Datsun cars in emerging markets and growth in China, the world’s largest auto market. Nissan Motor (NSANY) also forecast an operating profit margin of 5 percent for this financial year, up 0.2 percentage point from last year but still well below Toyota Motor’s (TM) forecast 8.9 percent and Honda Motor’s (HMC) projected 6 percent. “We were expecting Nissan’s guidance to fall short of analyst expectations and it seems it has turned out to be true. We think Nissan will be having a hard time, unlike some of its competitors,” said a trader at a European asset management advisory firm. Nissan forecast 405 billion yen ($3.98 billion) in net profit for the year ending March 2015, compared with the 425.4 billion yen mean estimate of 21 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Like its Japanese rivals, Nissan said that foreign exchange moves will become a negative factor for its earnings this year after providing a major boost last year, when the weakening yen substantially increased the value of its overseas earnings. Currency moves are expected to cut Nissan’s operating profit by 55 billion yen for 2014/15, after providing a 247.6 billion yen boost the year before. Nissan forecast a rise in its global market share this fiscal year to 6.7 percent from last year’s 6.2 percent, although the automaker has promised to emphasize profitability over market share after heated expansion increased its costs and depressed profit margins. Honda (HMC) recorded sales increase of 1% to 132,456 vehicles, while Hyundai Motor (HYMTF) volumes rose 4% – thanks to its subcompact Accent, Sonata sedan, and Sante Fe sports vehicle. However, German auto major Volkswagen (VLKAY) continues to struggle in the U.S. and saw shrinking volumes of 30,831 vehicles, a fall of 8.4% against last year. Volkswagen’s Golf and Beetle performed poorly as sales saw a sharp drop of 31% and 28%, respectively.

That sounds, in some ways, like more of a dig at legacy automakers like Honda Motor (HMC), who continue pouring money into fuel-cell vehicles, than it does at Plug Power, but so be it. Plug Power’s the one that dropped 13% to $4.66 today.

Reed Saxon/APToyota’s North American headquarters in Torrance, Calif. As part of a companywide overhaul, Toyota Motor (TM) is planning to move its sales and marketing headquarters to suburban Dallas from Torrance, Calif., according to reports. The company will restructure its marketing arm, which currently is based in Torrance in southern California, and houses about 5,300 employees, who are being offered a redundancy package under the reorganization that is set to begin Thursday. The move would put Toyota’s management closer to its operations that produce cars for the U.S. market and would reduce production costs. It is still unclear how many employees will be asked to move from the Torrance unit and how much time would elapse before the transition is complete. Employees “whose positions are significantly different in the new organization have been provided with several options, including applying for opportunities within the new marketing organization or in other departments at [Toyota Motor Sales] or Toyota Financial Services,” the company said, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Japanese automaker has vehicle assembly plants in Kentucky, Indiana, Texas and Mississippi, along with technical centers in Michigan and California, while its manufacturing operations headquarters for the U.S. market is based in Erlanger, Ky. About 71 percent of the vehicles Toyota sells in the U.S. are manufactured at its 14 manufacturing facilities, up from 55 percent in 2008 and, last year, Toyota sold 2.24 million cars and light trucks, down from a record 2.62 million sold in 2007, reports said. Related According to Los Angeles Times, Torrance’s Mayor Frank Scotto didn’t know of Toyota’s plans to move base but added that he knew that the company was supposed to make a corporate announcement Monday. “When any major corporation is courted by another state, it’s very difficult to combat that,” Scotto said, according to the Times. “We don’t have the tools we need to
