(Bloomberg) — Sears Holdings Corp. gained some breathing room in its comeback effort thanks to deals with some of the biggest names in finance.
Lenders including billionaire Bill Gates’s Cascade Investment LLC agreed to give the struggling retailer more time to repay debt. And MetLife Inc. will take on pension obligations for about 51,000 retirees, Sears said Tuesday in a statement. The Hoffman Estates, Illinois-based company climbed 5% to $8.24 at 10:40 a.m. in New York trading.

It’s not, especially after the language it slipped in its new annual report on Tuesday.

Just in the past few weeks, Wall Street has seen bankruptcy filings from sporting goods retailer Gander Mountain, RadioShack successor General Wireless Operations, everyday value price department store operator Gordmans Stores (GMAN) and appliances, electronics and furniture retailer HHGregg (HGG) . Last Wednesday, children’s apparel retailer Gymboree cautioned it was running low on cash and may not survive. Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD) voiced concerns on Tuesday about its ability to stay in business, while women’s apparel chain Bebe (BEBE) is reportedly on the brink of closing all 170 of its stores.

And Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) is expected to report its most recent quarterly results on Thursday. The consensus estimates call for $0.15 in EPS and $2.3 billion in revenue. Shares closed trading at $5.06 on Friday, in a 52-week range of $4.38 to $8.20. The consensus price target is $5.36.

Yet again, Chesapeake Energy (CHK) has tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500, delivering the biggest declines of the day despite a rise in natural gas prices.
Chesapeake Energy dropped 4.2%, or 26 cents to $5.89, while the S&P 500 declined 0.68% to 2,328.95. Front Month Nymex natural gas for May delivery rose 1.35% to $3.230 per million British thermal units.
Last month, Stifel Nicolaus analyst Karl Chalabala kicked off coverage of the natural-gas and oil-exploration company with a buy rating, saying the stock would give investors exposure to a bullish demand cycle. At $10, his price target suggested, at that time, that the stock could double over the next 12 months.

Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM), the country’s largest producer of natural gas, traded up about 0.7%, at $80.03 in a 52-week range of $72.16 to $89.30. Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) traded up about 0.5% to $3.00, in a 52-week range of $2.53 to $5.87. EOG Resources Inc. (NYSE: EOG) traded up about 1.6% at $117.19. The 52-week range is $81.99 to $119.00.
In addition, the United States Natural Gas ETF (NYSEARCA: UNG) traded up about 0.7% at $23.08 in a 52-week range of $20.40 to $31.72.
