DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) — Short-sellers hate being caught short a stock that reports a blowout quarter. When this happens, we often see a tradable short squeeze develop as the bears rush to cover their positions to avoid big losses. Even the best short-sellers know that it’s never a great idea to stay short once a bullish earnings report sparks a big short-covering rally.
>>5 Rocket Stocks to Buy Now
This is why I scan the market for heavily shorted stocks that are about to report earnings. You only need to find a few of these stocks in a year to help enhance your portfolio returns — the gains become so outsized in such a short time frame that your profits add up quickly.
That said, let’s not forget that stocks are heavily shorted for a reason, so you have to use trading discipline and sound money management when playing earnings short-squeeze candidates. It’s important that you don’t go betting the farm on these plays and that you manage your risk accordingly. Sometimes the best play is to wait for the stock to break out following the report before you jump in to profit off a short squeeze. This way, you’re letting the trend emerge after the market has digested all of the news.

Initial speculation about a coming disaster swirled around El Paso Pipeline Partners LP (NYSE: EPB). The company, now controlled by Kinder Morgan Inc. (NYSE: KMI), got a $3 million investment from CEO Richard Kinder and that ended the speculation about El Paso being the next to go.

This question really piqued my interest. Intuitively, I felt like it was probably true, but I didn’t want to answer the question until I could dig into it a bit more. I thought it would be interesting to have a look at the historical performance of a few publicly-traded general partners versus their limited partner to find out if that hypothesis is supported.
Consider Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP) and its general partner Kinder Morgan (NYSE: KMI). Over the past year, KMI did indeed outperform KMP, but if we track performance back to the IPO of KMI on Feb. 10, 2011 — KMP outperformed KMI during significant time periods. But both generally tracked each other quite closely in terms of returns.
Next consider Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP) and Energy Transfer Equity (NYSE: ETE), which owns the general partner and went public in 2006. ETE has significantly outperformed ETP since its IPO, particularly over the past four years:
But it is important to note that ETE also has interests in Sunoco Logistics Partners (NYSE: SXL) and Regency Energy Partners (NYSE: RGP).

Pipelines and midstream energy firms are supposed to be boring investments. And historically, energy logistics giant Kinder Morgan (KMI) has fit into that camp. That is, until analysts at Hedgeye Risk Management began to question the company’s — and its subsidiaries Kinder Morgan Energy Partners’ (KMP) and El Paso Pipeline Partners’ (EPB) — cash flows, CAPEX spending and incentive distribution rights (IDRs).

Don’t get me wrong – it’s fun to be right. There’s such a thing as being too right (or at least too right, too fast) though, and when that happens, the smart thing to do is, well do something about it. Case in point? I was right yesterday about Neurometrix Inc. (NASDAQ:NURO). I suggested the stock was already in the midst of a breakout, and NURO was poised to soar. I didn’t count on this morning’s big jump and subsequent gap, however, so now that my risk of continuing to hold it is as big as my potential reward from here, I and anybody else who followed my lead has a tough decision to make… though I’ve already made mine.
- [By Bryan Murphy]
My recent love affair with Neurometrix Inc. (NASDAQ:NURO) hasn’t exactly been a veiled secret. I first pointed out this diabetes-diagnostics stock was working on a technical breakout effort in early October, and I penned two more bullish-progress reports on NURO in November. Yet, the Neurometrix rally is still in its infancy, when you take a step back and look at the bigger weekly chart.

If you missed the recent surges from Neurometrix Inc. (NASDAQ:NURO) and/or OXiGENE Inc. (NASDAQ:OXGN), and decided to skip an entry on either or both because they were too frothy at the time, then here’s some good news…. you’re getting a second chance. Both NURO and OXGN are getting their proverbial second wind, and they’re doing so at a price much lower than the price you would have had to pay for either just a few days ago. There’s just one catch – you may want to hurry of you want in. This second wind is unfurling as rapidly as the first surges did.
- [By Bryan Murphy]
For the second time in as many days, I find myself supporting the purchase of a suddenly-bullish stock by saying “this time is different”. Yesterday I was talking about OXiGENE Inc. (NASDAQ:OXGN), but today I’m using the term to describe the bullishness that’s unfurling with Neurometrix Inc. (NASDAQ:NURO). And just for the record, yes, I know the perils of the “this time is different” argument. I tend to cringe when I hear it, as (too much) experience has taught me that things are rarely different – patterns within the market play themselves out over and over again. In the case of NURO as well as OXGN though, I can put my finger on something specific that we’ve not yet seen.
