Best Income Stocks For 2015

Although business headlines still tout earnings numbers, many investors have moved past net earnings as a measure of a company’s economic output. That’s because earnings are very often less trustworthy than cash flow, since earnings are more open to manipulation based on dubious judgment calls.

Earnings’ unreliability is one of the reasons Foolish investors often flip straight past the income statement to check the cash flow statement. In general, by taking a close look at the cash moving in and out of the business, you can better understand whether the last batch of earnings brought money into the company, or merely disguised a cash gusher with a pretty headline.

Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market’s best stocks, it’s worth checking up on your companies’ free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That’s what we do with this series. Today, we’re checking in on CSG Systems International (Nasdaq: CSGS  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Zacks Investment Research]

It is hard to find a good play in the Zacks Industry of mining non-ferrous metals, as the industry currently has a rank of 247 out of 261. In fact, in our five mining industries, there are only two No. 1-Ranked stocks: Brigus Gold (BRD) and Impala (IMPUY.PK). Both of these are in struggling industries, but they have proven to be best-in-class thanks to improving earnings estimates. Plus, both have seen their ranks surge from holds (or worse) up to strong buy territory, suggesting either of these names might be better picks than the struggling SCCO at this time.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Richard Rhodes]

Given this economic backdrop, and developing pressure on corporate revenues, margins, and earnings, we feel that risk is being misplaced at current levels.

The 14-day and 40-day models are now overbought. Now, the 14-day and 40-day are peaking, which would certainly indicate a correction stands as the highest probability.

The % of stocks above their 10-day moving average (dma) is at the 70%-level; still a major divergence with prices.

The % of stocks above their 200-dma stands at 77%. The 87% level marked previous highs. The 50-dma/150-dma cross breakdown now confirms a larger correction. Bottoms form between 30%-40%.

Overall, the risk-reward remains skewed to the downside, regardless of whether prices remain above trendline resistance, as our model group suggests a correction to the 110-day moving average, currently at S&P 1711.

A clear breakdown at that level would accelerate the decline towards the wide 200-dma and 380-dma range, between 1657-1571.

Small cap tech consulting firm Perficient, Inc (NASDAQ: PRFT) is getting deeper into the cloud computing space – meaning it might be worth taking a closer look at it along with the performance of First Trust ISE Cloud Computing Index Fund (NASDAQ: SKYY). We have just added Perficient, Inc to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio because we believe the company is trading at a discount to that of its small cap peers in the cloud computing space plus the stock’s fundamentals and technical chart looks attractive.

Best Income Stocks For 2015: WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity Fund (DXJ)

WisdomTree Japan Total Dividend Fund (The Fund) is a non-diversified fund. It seeks investment results that closely correspond to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the WisdomTree Japan Dividend Index (The Index).

The Index is a fundamentally weighted Index that measures the performance of dividend-paying companies incorporated in Japan, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and that meet other requirements necessary to be included in the WisdomTree DEFA Index. The Fund is managed by WisdomTree Asset Management, Inc.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tom Aspray]

The recent plunge in China (FXI) puts it down 8% and even the hedged Yen Japan ETF (DXJ) has lost almost 5% in just a week or so.

In last week’s column, Souring Sentiment Will Help Stocks, I discussed how the sentiment needed to become more negative in order to create a good buying opportunity. Last week’s action is a step in the right direction as despite the market bullishness in December, I thought that the risk was high and that only selective buying was warranted.

  • [By Jim Lowell]

First Trust US IPO is US-centric and a great complement to my more speculative pick, WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity (DXJ), which is made up of dividend paying Japanese companies and an inbuilt hedge against Yen movements versus our almighty US dollar.

  • [By Will Ashworth]

Anyone who follows ETFs likely knows about WETF. That’s because its WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity Fund (DXJ) gathered $9.5 billion in 2013, making it the second-most-popular fund next to the SPY. I recently gave it kudos for being one of the best funds in 2013 and although the DXJ is responsible for a considerable amount of WisdomTree’s growth in 2013, there are other reasons why I think this is one of the best asset managers anywhere.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Given its 144% gain since the end of last year, with 7% of that move coming today, it wouldn’t be tough to get excited about Fresh Healthy Vending International Inc. (OTCBB:VEND) … excited enough to jump into a VEND position. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of tell-tale signs that today is a major (albeit short-term) top today, and we’re very likely headed for a sizable correction beginning tomorrow.

  • [By U.S. News]

Pablo Martinez Monsivais/AP If you don’t make much money, you might assume doing your taxes will be simple. After all, there isn’t much information you need to give the Internal Revenue Service, given your meager paycheck. But, of course, some people who find it tough to make ends meet don’t have just one job — they have two or three, and perhaps they earn extra money working at home, which can complicate a tax form. Additional challenges: Some taxpayers are part of a blended family, or part of a family unit that isn’t quite family. So while you may not earn much, it doesn’t necessarily mean your taxes will be simple. Fortunately, many low- to moderate-income individuals can get free professional help to do their taxes. “There’s a wide swath of low- to moderate-income taxpayers who can get their taxes done for free — approximately 100 million taxpayers who are eligible,” says Tim Hugo, executive director of the Free File Alliance, a coalition of companies that work with the IRS to provide free tax preparation and filing. So if you can’t afford to hire someone to do your taxes or buy software, you may not have to go it alone. Here are the questions you likely have — and the answers. Who qualifies? Generally, if your adjusted gross income is $52,000 or less, you probably qualify for help. Adjusted gross income, for those who need a refresher, is your gross income after exemptions and deductions. Your gross income is all your income — not just your salary, but alimony, proceeds from a car you sold and so on. So if your income is close to $52,000, you might not actually know if you qualify until you do your taxes and see what number you land on. To take advantage of free tax software — more on that in a moment — your adjusted gross income will generally need to be $58,000 or less. Where do I go? You will probably want to find a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, known as VITA, or a Tax Counseling for the Elderly program, known as TCE. Both are

Of course, I’d also like to alert you to these big blue chips that have fallen in the eyes of the analyst community before they disappoint with their earnings reports.

Avon Products (AVP): In the past three months, analysts have slashed their estimates by 19%. Avon Products is expected to see sales fall 8.1% and earnings plunge 18.9%. AVP is a sell. Coach (COH): In the past three months, analysts have reduced their estimates by 11%. Coach is now headed towards a 1.1% drop in sales and an 8.9% drop in earnings. COH is a sell. Hess (HES): In the past three months, analysts have slashed their estimates by 19%. Hess is due to post a 75% year-on-year drop in sales and just 7.5% annual earnings growth. HES is a hold. H&R Block (HRB): In the past two months, analysts have slashed their estimates from a profit of 1 cent per share to a loss of 8 cents per share. HRB is a hold. Target (TGT): In the past two months, analysts have cut their estimates by 15%. Target is now expected to see sales retreat 2.8% over last year and earnings fall nearly 16%. TGT is a sell.

Now a lot can happen in the weeks between now and these earnings announcements, so there is a chance that some of these will firm up before then. However, in the meantime I see no reason to hold stocks that are underperforming their peers, especially when so many premium stocks are still on sale.

Advisors’ Opinion:

For Wall Street types, single-family foreclosures can be bought cheaply and in bulk, then fixed up and rented. Companies like the Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) and Colony Financial (NYSE: CLNY  ) have been very active in this market, with the former purchasing 16,000 homes just last year, and the latter ramping up its own portfolio to approximately 7,000. This new industry has also spawned fresh entrants from the REIT field, Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) and Altisource Residential, (NYSE: RESI  ) two trusts that were spun off earlier this year from parent companies Two Harbors Investment (NYSE: TWO  ) and Altisource Portfolio Solutions (NASDAQ: ASPS  ) , specifically to take advantage of the boom in the foreclosure-to-rental market.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

The investment-to-REIT model is alive and well
Before the very end of last year, those involved in the single-family purchase and rental business were largely private equity groups like the Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) , Colony Financial (NYSE: CLNY  ) , and Oaktree Capital (NYSE: OAK  ) , which bought up distressed properties by the truckload.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

Is it risky to be putting so much money into an as-yet unproven business model? Some may think so, including investors. Noting the tumble in stock price that newbies like Silver Bay and American Residential have suffered recently, Colony Capital (NYSE: CLNY  ) chief Thomas Barrack postponed the IPO of his new single-family rental company, Colony American Homes. Similarly, Public Storage (NYSE: PSA  ) has filed for an IPO, too, hoping to take its American Homes 4 Rent unit public — at some unannounced, future date. In the meantime, American Homes can rely on its $500 million credit facility with Wells Fargo, which may be bumped up to $1 billion if necessary.
