Best High Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now

Someone who reads my articles asked me this question:

Do you know which specific investments that Buffett made in his early career gave him his biggest returns and generated his initial wealth?

What did he see in these companies that led him to invest in them?

– Ryan

If you read Alice Schroeder’s “The Snowball” you can easily find the investments that generated Warren Buffett’s initial wealth.

Here, I’ll talk about just the first $100,000 Warren Buffett made investing in stocks.

We’ll start after Warren Buffett first read “The Intelligent Investor” but before he started taking Ben Graham’s class at Columbia. Buffett already owned Marshall Wells before he took Ben Graham’s class. He still owned the stock when he went asked David Dodd (co-author of “Security Analysis”) if he could skip Dodd’s class and go to Marshall Wells’s annual meeting. This is where Buffett first met Walter Schloss.

Let’s take a look at Marshall Wells when Buffett owned the stock.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

For investors, the recent drop in all three shares — along with Kinder Morgan Management LLC (KMR) –- have put them all near their 52-week lows and at some of the highest dividend yields not seen in years. At these prices, you’re still getting strong dividend growth — about 5% for KMI — along with the chance to own the largest pipeline network in North America.

  • [By The Part-time Investor]

I sold Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMP), 168 shares at $80.38, and I replaced it with Kinder Morgan Management (KMR), 264 shares at $75.39. KMR pays its quarterly distribution in extra shares, rather than in cash, as KMP does. For some (crazy) reason this makes it okay to hold it in a retirement account without the tax implications.

ADM has sought to grow by reaching out to industry peers. It allowed Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) to use an Iowa plant to produce its renewable algal oils, which helped Solazyme boost its overall production to achieve commercial-scale levels. Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rura l areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee

Yesterday, we recapped a sticky issue over at Goodrich Petroleum (GDP) regarding a successfully fracked well that got clogged.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Goodrich fell 5.1% yesterday but things have begun to normalize for Goodrich shares today, as at least one analyst weighed in this morning with a note saying this is a minor setback at best.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey’s Neil Dingmann explains that there’s no need to pull the plug on Goodrich’s shares:

It is not uncommon for a well to become plugged during the flowback stage, especially using new technology (dissolvable frac plugs). However, we still anticipate an initial production rate over 700 barrels per day, possibly rivaling the Smith 5-29H-1 (about 1,000 barrels per day) and coming online potentially as soon as early January. In addition, the Weyerhaeuser 51-1H-1 should be completed and initial production next month and the CMR 8-5H-1 should come online a few weeks later. We also still soon anticipate the announcement of a large acquisition by another operator in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS).

Dingmann also notes that shares have been under pressure as investors worry over well completion, and that turnaround in the form of a few good wells will ease that worry.

Shares of Goodrich have gained 0.2% to $16.46 at 11:07 a.m. today, while Cabot Oil & Gas (COG) has fallen 0.2% to $38.39, Anadarko Petroleum (APC) has gained 0.4% to $78.50, Range Resources (RRC) is little changed at $83.56 and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) is little changed at$186.36.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dimitra DeFotis]

The crisis in Ukraine and Russia’s tactics make U.S. assets look more secure and more valuable: some U.S. refiners that could export fuel, utility holding companies that could export liquefied natural gas, and related pipeline companies could see even more benefits, longer-term,  from the North American fracking and horizontal drilling boom. But approval of the TransCanada (TRP) Keystone XL pipeline is a necessary piece of that equation, Adams writes.

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

The saga surrounding TransCanada’s (TRP) Keystone XL pipeline system is getting a bit ridiculous. After years of delays, setbacks, protests and other headaches, things looked like they were heading in the right direction for the massive infrastructure project and potentially TRP stock.
