Campbell Soup Company (NYSE: CPB) shares tumbled 3.44 percent to $43.57 after the company reported a rise in its fiscal third-quarter earnings and cut its FY14 forecast.
- [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]
Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Campbell Soup (CPB), the world’s largest soup maker, cut its full-year sales forecast after posting weaker-than-expected quarterly sales as increased promotions failed to boost its U.S. soup division. Shares of Campbell, which also makes Prego pasta sauces and Pepperidge Farm cookies, fell 5.4 percent in premarket trading. The company said it expects sales from continuing operations to increase about 3 percent in fiscal 2014 ending July, compared with the previous forecast of a 4 to 5 percent rise. Campbell has been facing stiff competition from private-label brands and smaller rivals and has had trouble attracting younger, more health-conscious consumers to its canned soup products. The company launched eight new soups in January, including its first Latin-inspired cooking soups, and new varieties in its Healthy Request line. However, Campbell said Monday it was disappointed that its plans did not drive stronger soup sales in the third quarter ended April 27. “Despite an increase in the frequency of our promotional activity in the third quarter, we did not realize the anticipated lifts in a challenging consumer environment.” Chief Executive Officer Denise Morrison said in a statement. Campbell didn’t give a figure for U.S. soup sales for the quarter, but said sales “held steady” after growing 14 percent in the same quarter a year earlier. The company said it expects full-year adjusted earnings to be at the low end of its forecast of $2.53 to $2.58 a share. Analysts on average expect a profit of $2.53 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Net income attributable to Campbell rose 1.7 percent to $184 million, or 58 cents a share, in the third quarter. Excluding items, the company earned 62 cents a share. Net sales grew 0.4 percent to $1.97 billion. Analysts on average were expecting a profit of 59 cents a share on revenue of $2 billion. The company’s shares had risen about 4 percent so far this year to Frida

Paul Sakuma/AP There were plenty of winners and losers this week, with a few potential mergers coming undone and a maker of electronic learning toys getting schooled. Here’s a rundown of the week’s smartest moves and biggest blunders. Trex (TREX) — Winner It’s summer, and apparently a lot of homeowners decided to invest in sprucing up their outdoor living space. Trex posted strong quarterly results on Monday. The leading maker of weather-resistant wood-alternative decking saw its sales climb 23 percent, and adjusted pre-tax earnings soared 62 percent. There was some weakness earlier this earnings season out of other home improvement specialists, so it’s a welcome surprise to see Trex holding up so well. The good news doesn’t end there. Trex is eyeing accelerating growth, calling for revenue to climb a better than expected 27 percent in the current quarter. Mergers — Loser In any week there seems to be a couple of acquisitions or mergers, but sometimes Cupid isn’t feeling up to the arrow-slinging task. A couple of big potential buyouts came undone this week when Rupert Murdoch pulled his offer to buy out Time Warner (TWX), and Sprint (S) nixed plans to snap up T-Mobile (TMUS). The deals fell apart for different reasons. Murdoch just didn’t have an interest in chasing Time Warner’s stock higher in a hostile buyout bid. Sprint realized that regulators weren’t going to be happy unless there were four major independent wireless carriers out there. Instant Gratification — Winner Amazon.com (AMZN) announced on Wednesday that it was expanding its same-day delivery service to six more cities. Prime shoppers in Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, metro areas will now be able to place an order on the website by noon and pay $5.99 to have it delivered that same day. Naturally the selection is limited to items that Amazon stocks locally, but the one knock on Amazon about having to wait a day or two at least for shipme

Jack in the Box (NASDAQ: JACK ) owns a large burger chain and a much smaller fast-casual Mexican chain called Qdoba Mexican Grill. Yet it is Qdoba that may be stealing the show going forward. With the release of Jack in the Box’s second- quarter results, Qdoba Mexican Grill, which until recently hasn’t seemed like much of a threat, looks like it has a shot at Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG ) stardom.

Shares of Jack in the Box Inc. (JACK) fell 1% in Wednesday’s extended trading after the fast food chain said its second-quarter revenue dropped. However, its quarterly profit rose 19% from a year earlier.

China announced it is shooting for 7.5% GDP for 2014. At the sound of that target, DryShips (NASDAQ: DRYS ) and Diana Shipping (NYSE: DSX ) are likely celebrating. China is the primary country these days responsible for rising market rates for dry shipping, but something in the announcement may warrant a bit of caution.
- [By Nickey Friedman]
It seems like everybody these days universally agrees that the dry bulk shipping market will get better at least in the short term. Executives from DryShips (NASDAQ: DRYS ) , Navios Maritime Partners (NYSE: NMM ) , Diana Shipping (NYSE: DSX ) , and other carriers have voiced optimism about increased demand for 2014. Even if that optimism is realized, there is another very important factor to watch that could ruin the whole thing.
- [By Bryan Murphy]
To say the last few weeks have been disappointing ones for shareholders of maritime shipping stocks like NewLead Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:NEWL), FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE), or Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE:DSX) would be an understatement. After a fantastic second half of 2013 for most shipping stocks, the industry has been submerged (metaphorically) since the beginning of 2014. For perspective, DSX gained 32% over the course of the last six months of 2013, bur has fallen 5% since then. NEWL, though a loser all throughout the latter part of last year, has fallen a whopping 13% since 2014 began. FREE has performed about the same, offering glimmers of hope in the latter part of 2013, but popping that bubble in the meantime.
