Best Heal Care Stocks For 2014

Despite the video streaming service gaining 183% year-to-date, Netflix (Nasdaq:NFLX) always seems to have its detractors. The latest argument: its subscriber base didn’t grow enough in the second quarter. It’s tough having to be perfect, but that’s the world it lives in. This is a stock that continues to divide investors. Here’s why that’s a good thing.

Too Much Of A Good Thing
If you’re like me, whenever things get too good in your life and everything is going your way, you immediately start to wonder when reality is going to smack you upside the head and send things spiraling downward. That’s just the way life is. I get the same impression with Netflix. Although its stock is rolling along beautifully at $250, a headline from USA Today had its stock “plunging” July 23 on less than stellar subscriber growth. There were at least three other mainstream media outlets with the same hysterical headline. About halfway through the trading day, its stock was down less than 5% on about double the normal volume. Perhaps the sensational headline makes for better readership–but it certainly doesn’t provide an accurate picture of what’s really happening to its stock. In the scheme of things this a minor blip.

OMC: An announcement by European Union regulators cleared the way for advertising powerhouses Omnicom Group Inc. (OMC)  and rival Publicis Groupe SA (PUBGY) (PGPEF)   (FR:PUB) to merge. The combined firm is expected to be the world’s largest advertising agency. Shares of Omnicom Group were up 1.4%.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Omnicom Group (NYSE: OMC) is estimated to report its Q3 earnings at $0.80 per share on revenue of $3.48 billion.

Interactive Brokers Group (NASDAQ: IBKR) is projected to post its Q3 earnings at $0.34 per share on revenue of $336.48 million.

“Consumer discretionary earnings will be an interesting bellwether on what’s been driving growth,” McMillan said. Companies specific to the consumer discretionary sector reporting in the coming week include Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (CMG) , Mattel Inc. (MAT) , Interpublic Group of Cos. (IPG)  and Omnicom Group Inc. (OMC) .

Finally, advertising and marketing services company Omnicom Group (NYSE: OMC  ) added 3.4% despite no company-specific news today. However, earlier in the week, Omnicom announcement that it was keeping its dividend steady at $0.40 in the upcoming quarter certainly invigorated shareholders, who are digging Omnicom’s 2.5% yield. Personally, I can’t help but be a little skeptical of ad and marketing consultants in a slow-growing global environment, but shareholders are definitely enjoying a solid end to the week.

Quick – what do Simon Property Group Inc. (NYSE:SPG), Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. (NYSE:DPS), and Silicon Image, Inc. (NASDAQ:SIMG) have in common? If you said absolutely nothing, you’d be about 99% right. There’s one common thing between SIMG, SPG, and DPS right now, however. What’s that? All three stocks are on my personal “buy” list this week.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

The exact same setup is shaping up in shares of small-cap semiconductor firm Silicon Image (SIMG). Like HCP, this firm is stuck trading in a downtrending channel. Unlike HCP, trendline resistance is a whole lot stronger in this stock. Shares have gotten swatted down on each of the last eight attempts through that ceiling; with shares at resistance again, the high-probability move is to the downside.

Again, relative strength has been terrible since the summer; SIMG is underperforming the S&P by a considerable margin. Downtrending relative strength is a cardinal sin for stocks, so with shares sitting at resistance, now’s a stellar place to be a seller. While support has been pretty strong along the way down, SIMG’s previous penetrations through S1 should be a big red flag that buyers are skittish.

SIMG is in a textbook downtrend right now. Don’t get caught on the wrong side of the trade.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

It’s certainly no Safe Bulkers, Inc. (NYSE:SB) or Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ:SBLK), in terms or market cap or revenue. In fact, even with the drybulk shipping industry it’s a somewhat obscure name. Yet, FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE) may well be the stock with the most near-term potential upside, now that it’s gotten over a key technical hump.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

To say the last few weeks have been disappointing ones for shareholders of maritime shipping stocks like NewLead Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:NEWL), FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE), or Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE:DSX) would be an understatement. After a fantastic second half of 2013 for most shipping stocks, the industry has been submerged (metaphorically) since the beginning of 2014. For perspective, DSX gained 32% over the course of the last six months of 2013, bur has fallen 5% since then. NEWL, though a loser all throughout the latter part of last year, has fallen a whopping 13% since 2014 began. FREE has performed about the same, offering glimmers of hope in the latter part of 2013, but popping that bubble in the meantime.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Back in early November, yours truly penned some bullish thoughts on FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE), NewLead Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:NEWL), and DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ:DRYS). While each stock has its own merits, the crux of the bullishness was ultimately rooted in the brewing rebound of the Baltic Dry Index… a reflection of the prices companies pay shippers like FreeSeas and DryShips to haul goods over the ocean.

Small cap mining stocks Discovery Minerals Ltd (OTCMKTS: DSCR), Zinco Do Brasil Inc (OTCMKTS: ZNBR) and Amalgamated Gold and Silver Inc (OTCMKTS: BCHS) have been getting some extra attention lately as one stock surged last Friday while the other two are or have been in the past, the subject of paid promotions. It goes without saying though that small cap mining stocks tend to be riskier than your average stock. But do these three small cap mining stocks have what it takes to produce a mother lode for investors? Here is a deeper dig into all three:

Pendrell (PCO) is a fully integrated intellectual property investment and advisory firm. This stock closed up 2.3% to $2.18 in Tuesday’s trading session.

    Tuesday’s Range: $2.08-$2.22

    52-Week Range: $1.04-$2.71

    Tuesday’s Volume: 263,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 457,962

From a technical perspective, PCO bounced higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $2.16 with lighter-than-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of PCO within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if PCO manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $2.22 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in PCO as long as it’s trending above Tuesday’s low of $2.08 or above $2 and then once it sustains a move or close above $2.22 with volume that hits near or above 457,962 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PCO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.50 to its 52-week high at $2.71.
