Best Gas Utility Stocks To Buy For 2015

Tough nosed politician Frank Underwood, the lead character in hit Netflix Netflix series House Of Cards, will stop at nothing to get what he wants. If the video streaming powerhouse’s management is anything like their star HBO better watch out. In a letter to shareholders Monday Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells were not shy about their ambition to overtake the reigning content king.

Hasting and Wells first pointed out that a Morgan Stanley Morgan Stanley report from March showed that 17% of consumers surveyed felt Netflix was the service that offered the best original programming, “second only to HBO.” Then the men concluded their seven page letter by saying, “We are approaching 50 million global members, but that is far short of HBO’s 130 million. We are eager to close the gap.”

Netflix’s first quarter earnings report shows that the company is on its way.

Netflix reported $1.1 billion in first quarter revenue, up 36% from the same period last year. Net income came in at $53 million, up from just $3 million a year ago and almost $2 million ahead of Wall Street analysts’ consensus estimate. Earnings per share were 86 cents, 4 cents ahead of the Street estimate.

The first thing to realize about StoneMor is that arcane and flexible accounting rules make it important to dig beneath its GAAP earnings. Growth throughout the industry has been substantial, as up-and-coming Carriage Services (NYSE: CSV  ) continued to stay on pace for double-digit sales growth as it rapidly expands its reach. Even well-established player Matthews International (NASDAQ: MATW  ) managed to grow revenue by nearly 14% in the quarter that ended in March, although its earnings fell slightly from the year-ago quarter. Still, StoneMor’s sales haven’t been able to rise as quickly as its peers, with its previous report including just a 6% gain in revenue.

A little good news out of China goes a long way for mining stocks like Rio Tinto (RIO) and BHP Billiton (BHP) as well as mining-machinery companies like Caterpillar (CAT) and Joy Global (JOY).

    Rio Tinto

The Lindsey Group’s Peter Boockvar explains the news out of China:

China’s slight improvement in their main manufacturing PMI to 50.8 from 50.4 for May just puts it back to its 2013 average of 50.8 but as we all fear a pronounced China slowdown, the markets are taking the news positively. Export orders and employment remained below 50 but new orders rose to a 6 month high. China has taken some modest stimulus steps and are now afraid of slowing the property market too much as housing restrictions have been eased and selective reserve requirement ratios have been lowered. China’s markets were closed overnight but copper is up by almost 1.5%.

Shares of BHP Billiton have risen 0.5% to $68.19 at 2:18 p.m. today, while Rio Tinto has climbed 1.8% to $52.32 and Caterpillar has advanced 1.4% to $103.64. And Joy Global? It’s up 1.8% at $57.98 despite the it will release financial results on June 5. Barclays’ Andy Kaplowitz and team are cautious about Joy Global’s chances but expect to see signs of improvement:

While JOY’s results should improve sequentially, we think JOY’s overall outlook is likely to remain fairly cautious given global mining machinery end markets that remain in a bottoming process. We do anticipate some sequential improvement in both top line and earnings given typical seasonal improvement in JOY’s F2Q and the company’s cost cutting efforts; however, given relatively low backlog of ~$1.5bn entering the quarter, we think sequential revenue growth is likely to be more muted than in recent years (we model revenue of $900mn, +7% q/q and -34% y/y). That said, we think operating margin could improve meaningfully vs. F1Q, supported by some better overhead absorption as well as the realization

On Tuesday, Goldman Sachs reported that it has downgraded National Bank Holdings Corp (NBHC) to “Sell.”

The firm has cut its rating on NBHC from “Neutral” to “Sell,” and has given the company a $21 price target. This price target suggests that the stock will remain flat at its current price of $20.94.

An analyst from the firm commented: “While we believe that NBHC can grow EPS longer term as it leverages its $400mn of excess capital (above 10% tier 1 leverage), with shares trading at 1.1x TBV, we see limited upside in the near-term without any strategic M&A.”

Looking ahead, the firm has maintained its FY2013 EPS estimate of 26 cents. For FY2014 and FY2015, estimates have been maintained at 57 cents and $1.88.

National Bank Holdings shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Tuesday. The stock is up 10% YTD.

  • [By The Energy Report]

DS: It’s certainly good news. Elimination of the non-resident ownership policy [NROP] will permit European Union-based companies to own a majority stake in an operating uranium mine. That opens the door for companies like Rio Tinto Plc (RIO) and AREVA SA (ARVCF) [AREVA:EPA] to push forward with development of existing deposits or to buy more uranium assets in Canada. Accordingly, it increases takeover potential for companies like Denison Mines Corp. (DNN).

Always touchable money is cash. For individuals, there’s little reason for it not to be a simple bank account, money market fund, etc. For most investors, you can just let this stock sit in your brokerage account. Many brokers will sweep unused cash into a money market account — or other form of savings — where it can earn a tiny amount of interest for you while staying totally liquid. One advantage of keeping cash in this form is that you can look at your cash and stock positions on the same (web)page any time you want. So, for example, if you know you want to keep 10% of your portfolio in cash — you can see that you have $12,000 in cash as part of your $120,000 brokerage account and that means you are right on target with your liquidity goal.

Price’s new buys in the quarter were Oenok (OKE), Dolby Labs (DLB) and T-Mobile (TMUS). I don’t find any of those particularly exciting at current levels, but I’m willing to acknowledge that Michael Price is a lot smarter than I am and probably sees value I am missing in these stocks. What I find much more interesting was that Price was doing a lot more selling than buying in the third quarter.
