Best Gas Stocks To Own Right Now

Although we don’t believe in timing the market or panicking over daily movements, we do like to keep an eye on market changes — just in case they’re material to our investing thesis.

As the closing bell rang today, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) had lost an astonishing 185 points, or 1.19%, and now it sits at 15,451. This monster move downward came just two days after the index rose 147 points and set  new intraday and closing all-time highs, after the Federal Reserve announced it would not begin tapering this month. Wednesday’s rally put the Dow up 299 points in just three days, putting the index on pace to be the second best week since early July But, after falling 40 points yesterday, and tanking today, the Dow ends the week up just 75 points, or 0.47%.

The other major indexes also lost ground today as the S&P 500 fell 0.72%, and the Nasdaq slid lower by 0.39%, but they both managed to post strong gains for the week, up 1.3% and 1.41%, respectively.

CVI is structured into two Managed Limited Partnerships (MLPs): CVR Refining (CVRR) and the nitrogen fertilizer unit CVR Partners (UAN). CVR Energy owns 71% of CVR Refining and 53% of CVR Partners. This is an interesting play in the energy sector, given UAN’s lower cost of ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate and CVRR’s edge as an MLP refiner.

Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ: IEP) led all MLPs in 2013 with a capital gain of 136 percent. IEP is an unconventional MLP involved in nine primary business segments: Investment, Automotive, Energy, Gaming, Railcar, Food Packaging, Metals, Real Estate and Home Fashion. IEP invests in energy-related companies such as CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR) and American Railcar Industries (Nasdaq: ARII), but nearly 60 percent of its assets are invested in the automotive sector and in investment funds. Since 2000, IEP has achieved an average annual return of 23.8 percent, and units currently yield 4.4 percent. MLP Profits subscribers had a chance at a 58 percent capital gain between the Sept. 9 Buy recommendation for IEP and its Dec. 16 liquidation from the Aggressive Portfolio.

Momenta also dropped 17%, as rival Teva Pharmaceutical (NYSE: TEVA  ) got good news from the Supreme Court in its battle to protect its Copaxone drug for multiple sclerosis. Momenta is ready to launch a generic version of Copaxone with partner Novartis (NYSE: NOV  ) , and an initial decision would have allowed Momenta to start those sales by May. After choosing not to add the case to its calendar on two separate occasions, the Supreme Court’s decision will have a major impact on Momenta’s plans. With a possible Supreme Court decision pending, Teva has at the very least bought some time and could eventually wrest victory from Momenta for a much longer period.

As odd as it is to see an article pertaining to quarterly earnings on our site, I just couldn’t resist. National Oilwell Varco (NOV) has officially put up some pretty impressive numbers. On Oct. 25, 2013, the company reported that for the third quarter ending on Sept. 30, 2013, it earned a net income of $636 million ($1.49 per share). If we compare this to last quarter, which earned a net income of $531 million, we can see that in just one quarter NOV experienced almost a 20% increase in revenue. Even if we take away the $10 million in pre-tax transaction charges and the $102 million in pre-tax gains that are results from the settlement of an outstanding legal claim, net income has still increased almost 8%. Part of this is due to operating profit increasing 3% (to 15% of sales) for the quarter.

Alon USA Energy (ALJ) and Alon USA Partners (ALDW) are surging thanks to a Credit Suisse upgrade, even as refiners like Valero Energy (VLO), Phillips 66 (PSX) and Holly Frontier (HFC) stumble.

    Bloomberg News

Analyst Edward Westlake and team explain their optimism for the Alon USA pair:

ALDW: Accounting for the revised commodity forecasts (plus support from
the self-help programs that the company is pursuing), our LT EBITDA rises by c4% on average. Granted that there is the possibility that ALDW will not be able to pay out a distribution in 4Q13/1Q14, we flag that for those willing to look past the near-term headwinds, the rolling 12 month forward potential yield starting in 2Q14 is 15% (and rises to c20% by 4Q14) – Certainly hard to overlook at these levels.

ALJ: Accounting for the revised commodity forecasts (plus support from selfhelp
programs), our LT EBITDA rises by c9% on average. ALJ could be worth up to c$15/sh (including the $2.25/sh expected contribution from the Bakersfield start-up – Delivery of this project is key). At current levels, the stock still provides c20% upside in the scenario where Bakersfield does not proceed (or c40% if it does). We raise our rating and target price to Neutral and $14/sh.

Alon USA Energy has gained 11% to $11.34 and Alon USA Partners has risen 5.2% to $11.12, even as Valero Energy has dropped 0.5% to $40.12, Phillips 66 has dipped 0.4% to $65.09 and Holly Frontier has fallen 1.1% to $43.71.

  • [By Robert Rapier] In last week’s issue I discussed the basics of the refining sector. Today I will provide an overview of four MLPs that hold refining assets.

To review, the refining sector was very profitable in 2012 thanks to unusually high crack spreads, which for many US refiners are approximated by the price differential between Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oils. For a more thorough explanation of this phenomenon, please refer to last week’s issue.

After years of trading at a $1 to $3 per barrel discount to WTI, Brent began fetching a premium a few years ago as a glut of crude developed in the mid-continent area of the US. In 2011 the Brent-WTI price differential increased to more than $25/bbl, and it remained historically high in 2012.

But pipeline capacity started to catch up this year, and the share prices of refiners retreated as the glut began to dissipate and the Brent-WTI differential shrank. In Q3 2012, the Brent-WTI differential a veraged $17.43/bbl, but by Q3 of this year, the differential had fallen to $4.43/bbl. This promises bad news for refiners about to report Q3 earnings.

Many analysts downgraded the refining sector in Q3, but as the differential fell below $5/bbl it was hard to imagine that the news could get much worse. With poor Q3 results largely priced in, the differential subsequently rose back above $10/bbl, signaling better refining margins moving into Q4.

Refiners began to post earnings this past week, and as expected they were weak. Valero (NYSE: VLO) reported slightly higher revenues year-over-year, but net earnings fell more than 50 percent from a year ago. Nevertheless, they beat the extremely pessimistic expectations of analysts, and Valero shares rose on the news.

Phillips 66’s (NYSE: PSX) refining unit actually posted a loss, but its chemical business turned in a solid quarter which more than compensated for the disappointing refining results.

Berman pioneered the idea of the World Poker Tour (WPT) and sold the concept to the Travel Channel. Watching poker on television had always been boring since the viewing audience could not see the down cards which the players held. Berman remedied that problem by allowing a camera to expose the down cards to the TV audience. That idea suddenly transformed Texas Holdem into a fascinating spectator’s sport. By the end of 2003 the stock had reached its book value of 15 dollars a share and I decided to take my profits, perhaps a bit prematurely. The stock quickly climbed to about 30 dollars a share on sheer momentum.
