Best Gas Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Investors tend to like firms that return large sums of capital to shareholders, especially when they are doing well. In the diversified industrials segment, General Electric Co (GE) is one such company. This major supplier of industrial goods for the energy management, power, oil and gas, aviation, transportation and health care sectors, has not only given shareholders back $18 million of their invested capital in 2013, but has raised the dividend by 16% for 2014. Hence, investors’ excitement regarding GE is quite understandable.

Guru Support and a Wide Economic Moat

With the backing of investment gurus such as Jim Simons, Steven Cohen, Ray Dalio and John Keeley, the premier infrastructure firm has been on my radar for some time. A wide economic moat, sustained mainly by its strong economies of scope, give GE the edge over rivals and have generated great long-term growth prospects. Service support is another aspect of the company’s economic moat, since the customer must follow the established service plan, or face the consequences of malfunction and possibly passing for repairs. Hence, GE has understood that it can keep clients’ loyalty by offering solid service throughout the long duration of the contracts. Also, margins on the service end are much higher (around 25% versus 10% from equipment sales), leading to operating margins above the 20%.

In the energy world, it’s never much of a surprise when an oil company picks up natural gas assets or vice versa. But a coal company getting into the oil business? Now that’s a rarity. This week, Natural Resources Partners (NYSE: NRP  )  did just that. The company announced that it’s taking a working interest in some of Abraxas Petroleums (NASDAQ: AXAS  ) assets in the Bakken. While the $35 million purchase was not that large, it’s a rare case where a coal company branches out into other natural resources.

As an example, in 2009 Chevron (NYSE: CVX), Shell (NYSE: RDS.A) and ExxonMobil teamed up on the Gorgon natural gas project in Australia. The Gorgon and Jansz-Io gas fields are estimated to contain 40 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, which will supply natural gas to the growing Asia Pacific market for decades. Chevron has invested more than $18 billion, and the total project cost has risen to $52 billion (40 percent over budget). That’s a lot of capital spent on something that hasn’t yet shown up as production, but once it does it will produce for many years.

But as highlighted earlier Whitecap’s Canadian light sweet crude is not as heavily discounted as Canadian heavy oil or bitumen. This does not leave it exposed to the same price risks and volatility as those companies that have a significant portion of their production made up by Canadian heavy oil and Bitumen, such as Husky Energy (HUSKF.PK), Suncor (SU), Imperial Oil (IMO) and Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ).

Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rura l areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee

Another potential earnings short-squeeze trade is CST Brands (CST), a retailer of transportation fuels and convenience goods in North America, which is set to release its numbers Tuesday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect CST Brands to report revenue of $3.19 billion.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for CST Brands is very high at 19.4%. That means that out of the 55.66 million shares in the tradable float, 11.75 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they’re looking for, then this stock could easily rip substantially higher post-earnings as the bears rush to cover some of their bets.

From a technical perspective, CST is currently trending above its 50-day moving average, which is bullish. This stock has been trending sideways for the last three months, with shares moving between $30.31 on the downside and $33.96 on the upside. A high-volume move above the upper-end of its recent range could trigger a major breakout trade for shares of CST post-earnings.

If you’re in the bull camp on CST, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $32.99 to its all-time high at $33.96 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.29 million shares. If that breakout hits, then CST will set up to enter new all-time high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $40 to $45 a share.

I would simply avoid CST or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below its 50-day moving average of $32.12 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then CST will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at $31.06 to $30.31 a share. Any high-vol

    3. CST Brands (NYSE: CST) The gas station operator was spun away from parent Valero Energy (NYSE: VLO) in May, and though shares eventually moved up above $33, they've been backsliding recently. A company director thought he spotted value by the time shares fell to $31.55 a share (where he picked up $142,000 in stock). But shares have continued to fall below $30.

CST's newly independent management team aims to spruce up the company's 1,900 gas stations. It has the resources to make that happen: Valero left CST with more than $400 million in cash to work with.
