Best Forestry Companies To Buy For 2014

LONDON (AP) — Unemployment across the 17 EU countries that use the euro hit another record high in April — and appears to be on course to hit 20 million this year in what would be another gloomy landmark for the currency bloc.

Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics office, said Friday that the unemployment rate rose to 12.2 percent in April from the previous record of 12.1 percent the month before. In 2008, before the worst of the financial crisis, it was around 7.5 percent.

A net 95,000 people joined the ranks of the unemployed, taking the total to 19.38 million. At that pace, unemployment in the currency bloc — which has a population of about 330 million — could breach the 20 million mark by the end of the year.

Eurozone economies have been suffering because their governments are trying to improve public finances through aggressive spending cuts and tax increases. The problem is they’ve done it at a time when much of the private sector has been unable to plug the gap in activity left by the retreating state, unlike in the U.S., which has opted for a more gradual approach to debt reduction.

Also gaining double digits on the week was the highly embattled Peregrine Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: PPHM  ) which rallied after the FDA approved its late-stage trial design for its second-line non-small-cell lung cancer immunotherapy, Bavituximab. While trial design approvals are rarely big news, it is in this case because mid-stage results for Bavituximab have been all over the place. At first Bavituximab demonstrated a better than doubling in progression-free survival followed weeks later by management’s insistence that investors were not to trust the data. A few months later, following a review, we were told to trust the data again. This filing helps relieve some of the confusion surrounding Peregrine’s mid-stage results, and hopefully its phase 3 study will be black-and-white obvious as to whether Bavituximab provides a statistically significant benefit.

Peregrine Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: PPHM  ) is an upstart biotech targeting the treatment and diagnosis of cancer through monoclonal antibodies. It has a potential winner in its lead candidate that will begin its telltale phase 3 clinical trial later this year.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

I went out on a limb last week, and now it’s time to see how that decision played out.

I predicted that Noodles & Co. (NASDAQ: NDLS  ) would close lower on the week. After seeing the fresh IPO more than double and command a $1.3 billion market cap far sooner than its fundamentals should allow, I figured it would be in for reality check. A negative Barron’s piece kicked off the week in the seemingly appropriate bearish tone, but the shares did start to claw their way back later in the week. It wasn’t enough. The shares fell 3% on the week. I was right. I predicted that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) . This has been a tricky call lately, so how did it play out this time? Well, the market closed nicely higher this week. The Nasdaq moved 3.5% higher, and the Dow managed to close just 2.2% higher. I was right. My final call was for Peregrine Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: PPHM  ) to beat Wall Street’s income estimates in its latest quarter. The upstart biotech tackling cancer through monoclonal antibodies has been posting blowout quarterly results over the past year, and I was banking on seeing the trend continue. Analysts were looking for a loss of $0.06 a share during the quarter, and it came through with exactly that. It wasn’t a beat, though, so I was wrong.

Two out of three? I can do better than that.

Vitamin Shoppe Inc (NYSE: VSI), Books-A-Million, Inc (NASDAQ: BAMM) and Perfumania Holdings, Inc (NASDAQ: PERF) have the dubious distinction of being the worst performing small cap specialty retail stocks for this year (according to Finviz.com) with losses of 4.85% and 3% and a gain of 0.61%, respectively, since the start of the year (See my previous article: This Year’s Best Performing Small Cap Specialty Retail Stocks? I should mention that the definition of specialty retail stocks might vary from one stock screener to another, but what’s clear is that these three small cap retail stocks have been heading in the wrong direction for investors for much of this year.  With that in mind, what sort of performance should investors expect from these small cap specialty retail stocks on Black Friday and for the all important holiday season? Best Forestry Companies To Buy For 2014: Lorillard Inc(LO)

Lorillard, Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes in the United States. The company offers 43 different product offerings under the Newport, Kent, True, Maverick, and Old Gold brand names. Armed Forces. The company was founded in 1760 and is headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Lorillard Inc. (NYSE:LO), Altria Group Inc. (NYSE:MO), and the rest of the big tobacco names may want to take notice. For that matter, anyone with a presence in the electronic cigarette market (which still includes the aforementioned Altria and Lorillard, but many other small payers too) may want to pay attention as well…. e-cig newcomer American Heritage International Inc. (OTCBB:AHII) has just added two states to the number where its premium product can be purchased. The young company promised it was going to expand after jumping into the game on a small scale in – and this isn’t a misprint – January of this year. With today’s addition of Nevada and Illinois, AHII is now giving MO and LO a run for their money in eleven states. Thirty-nine more to go.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Lorillard Inc. (NYSE:LO) and Altria Group Inc. (NYSE:MO) might want to take a look over their shoulder… or perhaps take another, longer look. Not only is the cigarette space as competitive as ever for the likes of LO and MO, but there are some new faces playing the game. And, their strategy is to play the game in a way that’s never been played before. Even more alarming to the likes of Altria and Lorillard? These new players are already showing some great progress with this “new way”, and are on pace to capture $10 billion of the current annual cigarette market by 2017, up from around $1.0 billion last year.

  • [By Rupert Hargreaves]

As it turns out, many e-cig start-ups and even tobacco industry giant Lorillard (NYSE: LO  )  have infringed on these patents, possibly due to their rush getting e-cig products to market. So, six months on from closing the deal with Dragonite, Fontem Ventures, backed by Imperial Tobacco, has filed nine lawsuits in a federal court, asking the court to rule that the patents infringed were valid, and the defendants should pay as-of-yet unspecified damages. The companies Imperial is taking to court are Lorillard, NJOY, Vapor Corp., VMR Products LLC, Ballantyne Brands LLC, CB Distributors, Spark Industries LLC, Logic Technology Development LLC, FIN Branding Group LLC, Victory Electronic Cigarettes Corp. (NASDAQOTH: ECIG  ) , and DR Distributors LLC. So, it would seem as if Imperial is intending to kill off the majority of its competition before many of them can even get much of a foothold in the market.

Before the opening bell on Monday, Goldman Sachs raised its rating on cigarette company Lorillard Inc. (LO) to “Buy” from “Neutral.”

Goldman has a $60 price target on Lorillard, suggesting the company’s stock will appreciate 16% from its current price. In raising its rating on LO, GS also noted that Lorillard has a nearly 5% dividend yield.

GS analyst Judy E. Hong had the following comments about Lorillard: “While LO is not out of the woods in terms of the FDA’s potential regulation of menthol, we believe we may be entering a period of limited regulatory headline risk and the stars are aligning with the rest of the story as fundamentals remain solid, e-cig category could get another burst with the national entries by MO & RAI, and valuation has de-risked vs. the Staples group.”

Other companies such as TriQuint (TQNT) and Broadcom (BRCM) are reporting results with "strong mobile demand" and "higher-than-anticipated sales of cellular system-on-chip (SOC) and touch controllers." More famously, Apple (AAPL) has announced record sales for its ARM-inside iPhone 5S model introduced last month. Investors and analysts already knew that ARM reports royalty revenue a quarter in arrears, so any gains from iPhone 5S sales will not start to be seen until ARM´s next quarterly report and were not expected to be a factor in this report.

Broadcom provides wireless and wired semiconductor technologies to businesses and consumers worldwide. A recent earnings release has investors disappointed with the company. The stock has struggled in recent years and is currently trading near lows for the year. Over the last four quarters, earnings have decreased while revenues have increased, which has left investors to expect more from the company. Relative to its peers and sector, Broadcom has been a weak year-to-date performer. WAIT AND SEE what Broadcom does this coming quarter.

One equity that falls under the small-cap umbrella, and looks poised to benefit from a contrarian boon is shipping concern Frontline Ltd. (FRO).

Shares of Frontline have more than doubled in value since hitting a decade-plus low of $1.71 last May. In fact, the stock tagged a new annual high of $5.18 in early January.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The reason for the disconnect between earnings and stock performance has to do with the changing fundamentals for shipping overall. For years, shipping companies both on the dry-bulk and the tanker side of the industry have suffered from weakness in the global economy after having built huge numbers of new ships during better times. That forced Overseas Shipholding Group to seek bankruptcy protection late last year and has left tanker giant Frontline (NYSE: FRO  ) under considerable financial pressure as it continues to labor under a substantial debt load.
