Best Food Stocks To Invest In 2016

Guggenheim’s John Heinbockel and team explain why shares of Costco Wholesale (COST) are getting hammered today–and why they’re optimistic enough to start looking for “a compelling entry point”:

Investors concerned about uncharacteristically choppy U.S. comps will not take much solace from March results. Ex-gas U.S. comps rose just 3%, below our 4% estimateCanada and international comps were also light, but strong in absolute terms…

U.S. ex-gas comps rose 3%, below our 4% estimate. During the past four years, there have been just four months with sub-4% U.S. comps; two have occurred since January. What explains this? Fresh food deflation, especially in meat, is a factor. So are tough year-ago compares, with gains of 6-7% during this period. Lastly, we continue to believe that the company may be maxxing out traffic gains with its most loyal members. Importantly, as food inflation returns and compares ease, we expect U.S. comps to strengthen to 4-5%…

In trading on Tuesday, basic materials shares declined by 1.82 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included CVR Partners LP (NYSE: UAN), down 10 percent, and Resolute Forest Products Inc (NYSE: RFP), down 9 percent.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Enter CVR Partners LP (NYSE: UAN), the only company in the US to produce fertilizer from petroleum coke (petcoke). Petcoke is a byproduct of petroleum refining, and prices are usually set off coal prices, since these two products compete in the same niche. Thus the same dynamics that currently threaten the distributions of Rentech Nitrogen Partners and Terra Nitrogen Company play in CVR Partners’ favor.

In our article on September 16th (located here) we said we were still bullish the grocers and thought that Safeway (SWY) would continue to be a winner along with the industry. Apparently, we were not alone in that thinking as the company announced yesterday that they were putting in place a poison pill which will be good for one year in order to keep anyone from building a stake larger than 10% in the company. The move was prompted by Jana Partners taking a 6.2% stake in the company and the hope of management is that this one-year period will either cool the heels of Jana or allow the two parties to work together rather than going hostile. We personally dislike poison pills, but in this case, it should not be seen as a negative as we doubt anyone was considering assembling a stake at or above that 10% level. Investors cheered the news and sent shares higher by $2.75 (9.74%) to close at $30.99/share on extremely heavy volume of 29.8 million shares.
