Shares of Facebook (NASDAQ: FB ) are outperforming the broader market today with gains of more than 4%. The reason investors are cheering is news that automaker General Motors (NYSE: GM ) is now advertising on the social network again.
Around the time of Facebook’s controversial IPO last year, there was much concern over the effectiveness of Facebook’s display ads. GM famously and publicly cut its ad relationship with Facebook, saying it would no longer buy ads on the site. GM is one of the biggest advertisers in the U.S. market, so the automaker was a big fish to lose at the time. Car ads simply weren’t performing well on Facebook.
GM has now indicated that it plans to resume running ads on Facebook, which is a big vote of confidence in the social network. GM will feature ads for its Chevrolet brand on Facebook’s mobile platforms as part of its larger “Find New Roads” campaign. The campaign is notable because it is specifically a “mobile-only” pilot campaign that looks to target mobile Facebook users.

Seacoast Banking Corporation of Florida (NASDAQ:SBCF) is certainly no Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) or Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC), but then again, that may be a good thing – both larger banks are still dealing with the headaches of their sheer size. The smaller bank is far more nimble, and better still, appears to be on the verge of doling out a huge reward for shareholders.

One that recently crossed my radar as an “avoid” is small-cap bank Seacoast Banking Corp. of Florida (NASDAQ: SBCF ) (henceforth known here as Seacoast to make our lives easier).

Borrowing costs for Spain and Italy fell to their lowest levels in three years and stocks were trading higher.

Let us see if they still want to run the business in two to three years.”

On the basis of current cash flow, the company is fairly valued. If the Ameren facilities are added in, the cash flow of the combined facilities is greatly undervalued.

I believe investors should look past the current low dividend yields and relatively higher multiples of NAV per share for BDCs such as FDUS, MAIN, and TCAP, but should consider the total return for these companies. The table below compares FDUS and MAIN to both ACAS which does not pay dividends and Horizon Technology Finance (HRZN) that pays a higher than average dividend but after taking into account dividend growth, special dividends, and NAV per share growth (using last twelve months actual for projection purposes) it is clear that the expected investor return is based on more than the current dividend yield.
