An hour into trading, American International Group (NYSE: AIG ) is already down 4%, after being down 0.74% over the weekend. Will last week’s Fed-generated market landslide continue today, or will AIG and other financial stocks be able to start climbing out of the debris?
The freak-out continues
For those of you who may have been summiting Mt. Everest last week, or were perhaps binge-streaming 30 Rock, last Wednesday, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke announced that the central bank would begin tapering quantitative easing later this year if economic data remained encouraging.
The Fed’s final round of quantitative easing was launched last September, and eventually involved the monthly purchase of $85 billion in bonds. To put it mildly, when investors heard the announcement they freaked out: not just in the U.S., and not just in the equity markets. Investors around the world lost their minds in the commodities and bond markets, as well.
Foolish bottom line
To answer the question posed above, no, it doesn’t look like AIG and its financial peers are going to stop their slides today, let alone begin to start clambering back up. Frankly, it might be a while before they do much more than level off.

Ford Motor (F), meanwhile, hasn’t “missed the boat in China,” Brinkman says:
Highly attractive from a rate-of-change perspective, Ford is growing faster in China in percentage terms than any other company we cover…The narrative prior to 2012 was that Ford had missed the boat in China. That narrative quickly faded as Ford rode a wave of new product introductions to a +27% y/y increase in China sales in 2012, followed by +59% in 2013 and another +41% in year-to-date 2014. Profitability has followed, with Ford Asia Pacific narrowing losses in 2012 before turning the first profit in years in 2013. And thus far in 2014, 1Q profits have nearly eclipsed that earned in all of 2013. We estimate Ford is well on its way to its goal of Asia Pacific becoming a material contributor to global automotive pre-tax profits by mid-decade.

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images NEW YORK and DETROIT — U.S. banks looking to get in on a booming market for financing new-car sales have run into a formidable competitor: the auto manufacturers themselves. Financing arms of car companies, including Toyota Motor (TM), Honda Motor (HMC) and Ford Motor (F), made half of all new U.S. car loans in the first quarter, up from 37 percent a year earlier and the largest percentage of the market in four years, according to credit data firm Experian (EXPR). These companies also write the vast majority of leases, which contributed a record 26 percent of new car sales in the quarter, up from 23 percent last year and 20 percent in 2012. The financing arms are providing subsidies from the manufacturers, lowering monthly payments and extending loan terms to make it easier for buyers to drive away in a shiny, new vehicle. As a result, major banks are increasingly moving into riskier parts of the market to make loans. U.S. Bancorp (USB), for example, for the first time ever decided to start financing used cars, an area of the market that the automakers’ finance companies have little interest in. It also started offering loans to less creditworthy borrowers. And Wells Fargo (WFC) has been leveraging off a nationwide deal with General Motors (GM) to provide loans subsidized by the No. 1 U.S. automaker. Wells sees this as a way to gain more of the used car loan business at GM dealerships. The aggressive push by car companies is beginning to raise questions among industry analysts and consultants about whether it is sustainable. If interest rates rise, the automakers could find the incentives too costly unless they are prepared to take a hit to profits — with any pullback in the deals being offered customers running the risk of hurting demand. And, if used car prices weaken, the financing units could be hit with losses on vehicles coming back from leases and repossessions. The automakers’ financing companies are doing sub

Ford (NYSE: F ) also announced a partnership with the University of Michigan and State Farm Mutual Insurance Company to test how its automated driving technology might be applied to improve traffic safety. Nobody quite knows whether legal and safety issues can be overcome before driverless cars are allowed on the road, but all the major players seem convinced about the project’s potential.

If you listened to my bullish calls from December 27th and/or February 24th about Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG), then congratulations – you’re now up as much as 50%, depending on when you stepped into a trade, and which stock you chose. Now get out. See, as well as URZ and URG have done and are doing (URRE not so much), it looks like the short-term rally I first spotted a little more than a couple of months ago has fully run its course, and now these names are setting up a pullback.

Well, I’ll give myself an A for effort, but a C- for timing. But, I can bump that C- up to a B+ if my intuition is right as we head into the last few days of 2013 and the first few of 2014. What I’m talking about is a bullish commentary I penned back on November 26th regarding Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG). All three stocks were perking up, and more than that, the buzz surrounding URG, URRE, and URZ was getting louder. More often than not, when the fervor and bullish action and chatter reaches the levels they had reached a month ago, an explosion is right around the corner.

I was so scarred by their subsequent crash that when I heard a portfolio manager rhapsodizing about the recent performance of Plug Power Inc (NSDQ: PLUG), Fuelcell Energy Inc (NSDQ: FCEL) and Capstone Turbine Corp (NSDQ: CPST), I could scarcely believe it. Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST ) will release its quarterly report on Monday, and investors have been increasingly optimistic about the microturbine maker’s immediate prospects. Yet, even though the company’s stock rose recently to its best levels in almost three years, Capstone still has to demonstrate that its niche offerings give it a viable market that is too insignificant for larger rivals General Electric (NYSE: GE ) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) to go after.

Amy Sancetta/AP A consumer tech giant made the biggest acquisition in its history, and a popular discount airline paid the price for not discounting the way it said it was. Here’s a rundown of the week’s best and worst in the business world. Southwest Airlines (LUV) — Loser The “bags fly free” airline loves to jab at its competitors for slapping extra fees on everything from luggage to legroom to hide their true total fares, but Southwest’s advertised rates sometimes lack integrity too. Southwest messed up late last year when it promoted $59 fares for certain popular routes that it never ultimately offered at that price. The unfortunate episode came to a head this week when Southwest was fined $200,000 for deceptive marketing. It was a rare misstep for Southwest, and now it’s paying the price in more ways than one. Apple (AAPL) — Winner After weeks of speculation, Apple finally announced that it would pay $3 billion for Beats Electronics and Beats Music. Some have questioned the deal. Is Apple paying too much for what will be the largest acquisition — by far — in its history? Is the consumer tech giant desperate? Is this the end of organic innovation at Apple? Settle down. This purchase is a brilliant move. Beats Electronics is the leading marketer of premium headphones, and this gives Apple a high-end accessory category that it hasn’t excelled at on its own. It also gives Apple a neat way to play the popularity of rival platforms since headphones, naturally, are operating system agnostic. Beats Music also gives Apple a foothold in the booming on-demand streaming category. It may have just 250,000 paying subscribers, but this is a market where Apple had struggled to obtain music label licenses. Apple only had the discovery-based iTunes Radio where listeners can’t stream the exact song or playlist they crave. Beats Music solves that dilemma.
