Best Cheap Stocks For 2015

J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) stock skyrocketed last week after news leaked that Soros Fund Management had taken a big stake in the struggling retailer. And yes, with Penney selling today for close to book value, and a price-to-sales ratio less than half what rivals Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS  ) and Macy’s (NYSE: M  ) charge, you can see what might have attracted George Soros’ attention.

Problem is, Penney is cheap for a reason. Several reasons, actually. Listen in, as Fool contributor Rich Smith lays them out for you…

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Well, I’ll give myself an A for effort, but a C- for timing. But, I can bump that C- up to a B+ if my intuition is right as we head into the last few days of 2013 and the first few of 2014. What I’m talking about is a bullish commentary I penned back on November 26th regarding Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG). All three stocks were perking up, and more than that, the buzz surrounding URG, URRE, and URZ was getting louder. More often than not, when the fervor and bullish action and chatter reaches the levels they had reached a month ago, an explosion is right around the corner.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

You know, were it just Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE) or just Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG) or just Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ) making a decided bullish move, I might be able to dismiss it. Similarly, if URZ had only been moving higher for one or two days (or only URG or only URRE), it might be easy to not be impressed. Neither of those situations has been the actual case, however. All three stocks have been moving upward for several days now, quite a bit, on noticeably higher volume. There’s something “going on”, as it were, and if prior group-wide movements are any clue, it’s the kind of move worth tapping into.

The mid-cap bank’s stock closed at $28.21 on Friday in a 52-week range of $20.31 to $34.34. Based on Sterne Agee’s 2014 price target of $40.00, Popular has an upside potential of nearly 42% and a 2014 EPS estimate of $2.90. The investment firm’s forward multiple is just 9.6, below the Thomson Reuters consensus multiple of 10.3. Popular received TARP funds in 2009 and could repay the loan in the first quarter of next year, which will give the stock a shot in the arm as well.

But Mr. Henderson’s insights convinced me that the tag team of Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) and Oracle (NYSE: ORCL  ) is a far better play. He famously wrote that “if a firm is outside the top three, it should attempt to improve its position through consolidation or by shifting the basis of competition,” (my emphasis). Right now, the basis of competition is price, but only because new developments haven’t been taken into account.

Unfortunately for CALD, it’s not the only company filing those gaps. Numerous small companies compete with CALD as does Oracle (NYSE: ORCL). In fact, ORCL is making a big push into the cloud software space and it seems to view CALD as a less formidable adversary than CRM or N.

Exfinancials, the earnings upside has been 4.0%, driven in large part by technology ([Microsoft, Oracle (ORCL) (December), and SanDisk (SNDK)], among others). Our view is the recent market sell-off will abate as we doubt investors will worry about a real corporate earnings decline, something we think is required for a material market decline.

With a fiscal 2013 defense budget of nearly $614 billion, the United States is widely known to be a big spender on defense. By some estimates, U.S. defense spending accounts for nearly 60 percent of the $1.19 trillion the top 10 military powers spent on defense in 2011. In fact, our country allocates more than five times more money to defense than does its closest spending rival, China. And that’s not the half of it. In the cutting-edge field of military unmanned aerial vehicles, the United States has such a huge lead over its rivals that it makes their combined UAV fleets look like a rounding error in a world that’s essentially 100 percent dominated by U.S. drones. Pax Americana As The Wall Street Journal recently reported, the U.S. military commands a fleet of 429 “large drone” aircraft such as the General Atomics Predator and Northrop Grumman (NOC) Global Hawk. Meanwhile, America’s smaller drones, built by everyone from Boeing (BA) to Textron (TXT) to tiny AeroVironment (AVAV), maker of the ubiquitous Raven man-portable UAV, number in the thousands. Italy has nine, France, four, and Germany has three. As a result, when allied forces need a drone to “put eyes” on a target, more often than not, they have to ring up the U.S. military to get one. CVS Caremark (CVS) has found the perfect prescription for stock market gains after reporting earnings results this morning.

    Associated Press

For the quarter ended Dec. 31, CVS reported adjusted EPS of $1.12, up from 96 cents a year ago and ahead of analyst expectations of $1.11. Revenue rose to $32.8 billion from $31.4 a year prior and forecasts for sales of $32.6 billion. CVS also disclosed that it opened 60 new retail drugstores and closed one during the period.

Last week, CVS made headlines on the announcement that it would end tobacco sales and the market reacted accordingly. In a Barron’s Take, Teresa Rivas wrote, “With the number of U.S. smokers on the decline and regulation on the rise, CVS will likely more than make up for lost sales with public goodwill and a boost to its health-care brand. It also gets first mover advantage on a ban that may eventually have been forced on it.”

Raymond James analyst John Ransom notes that CVS has a healthy future:

First-quarter 2014 adjusted EPS guidance was actually raised to $1.03-$1.06 (up seven cents at the midpoint), suggesting better-than-expected near-term trends versus prior outlook. Net-net, fourth quarter capped another solid year out of CVS, with today’s stock price reaction likely less tied to the report itself and more focused on the…tobacco headwind offsets as well as initial comments with regard to the 2015 selling season and the retail competitive landscape (promotional activity high?).

Shares of CVS have advanced 2.7% to $68.74 at 3:0 p.m., trailing Walgreen’s (WAG) 5.3% rise to $63.87 but besting Rite Aid’s (RAD) 1.5% gain to $5.72.

    L. Busacca/WireImage for Sirius Satellite Radio A big celebration for Howard Stern and satellite radio will take place on Friday. Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) is hosting Howard Stern’s Birthday Bash that afternoon and evening from New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. The celebrity-studded event will naturally be broadcast on its satellite stations, but, in an unusual move, it will also stream the event for free — worldwide — through its siriusxm.com website. This is a pretty big fete. Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting the affair, and among the performers who have revealed that they will be part of the show are Jon Bon Jovi, John Fogerty, and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. Comedians Louis C.K., David Letterman, and Sarah Silverman will also be in attendance. In other words, even if you find Stern’s polarizing humor, interviews, and antics to be a bit crude, there may be enough celebrities whom you do like on tap to make it worth your while to tune in. Stern Really Did Save Satellite Radio Sirius XM is thriving and profitable with nearly 25.6 million subscribers. That probably wouldn’t have been the case without Stern. Satellite radio was a fledgling business occupied by two warring and profitless players when Stern signed a big deal to move his popular terrestrial radio show to the new platform. He went with the smaller Sirius over the larger XM, and the company rewarded the morning show icon with a $500 million deal for an initial five-year contract that kicked in at the start of 2006. The partnership was extended for another five years weeks before the first contract expired. Stern’s arrival changed the game for satellite radio. A morning show legend who at his peak attracted as many as 20 million listeners had left terrestrial radio for this premium platform at a time when few cars had satellite receivers and even fewer drivers wanted to pay for it. Stern didn’t just make satellite radio viable to the point where a majority of the new cars hitting showrooms now come e

Another under-$10 wireless telecom player that’s starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Partner Communications (PTNR), a telecommunications company, provides cellular and fixed-line telecommunication services in Israel. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 29%.

If you take a look at the chart for Partner Communications, you’ll notice that this stock has been trending sideways for the last month, with shares moving between $7.28 on the downside and $7.96 on the upside. Shares of PTRN are bucking the overall market weakness today as the stock starts to move within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PTNR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.80 to $7.85 a share and then once it clears its 52-week high at $7.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 107,303 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PTNR will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $10 to $12.20 a share.

Traders can look to buy PTNR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $7.38 to $7.28, or below its 50-day at $6.97 a share. One can also buy PTNR off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

DS: Two of our top picks are Cameco Corp. (CCJ) and Ur-Energy Inc. (URG). For Cameco, we’ve got a $25/share target and an outperform rating. This company is the industry’s go-to, the blue chip uranium company. It’s organically growing very low-cost operations, which are for the most part in very safe jurisdictions. It has a lower-risk approach to contracts, with a targeted pricing mix of about 40% fixed-pricing and 60% market-related pricing in the contract book. The company’s got a solid balance sheet. We think it’s going to end Q3/13 with about $800M in working capital and another $2 billion [$2B] in undrawn lines of credit. It’s also diversified across the nuclear fuel chain, with exposure not only to its core uranium mining business but also with nuclear fuel services, like conversion and fuel fabrication. It’s got a stake in the Bruce nuclear power plant as well as a newly bolted-on uranium trading business, so it’s quite diversified. On top of that, Cameco pays a 2% dividend. We think it offers a very attractive risk/reward proposition at these levels.
