Best Canadian Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Do you invest in dividend growth stocks? If you don’t, you ought to consider doing so. These dividend stocks to buy could be your ticket to a better retirement.

Many dividend investors get caught up focusing on yield when the growth is what’s truly important. By utilizing the power of compound interest, investors can achieve higher returns by merely owning the stocks of companies who regularly hike their dividends.

A Canadian finance site, Hardbacon, provides an excellent example why investing in dividend growth stocks is a sound idea:

“If you invest in a stock which pays $1 in dividends a year and costs $25, it means it yields 4% at the time you buy it (dividend yield on cost),” wrote Sam Kovacs. “If the company increases its dividend 10 cents every year, in 10 years those same stocks which you bought for $25 will be paying out $2 in dividends, an outstanding 8% yield on cost.”

That’s the power of income-growth stocks. Here are seven dividend stocks to buy that are worth owning. If that’s not enough to get your mouth salivating, each has hiked its dividends in 2017 by 20% or more!

Spun off from energy producer ConocoPhillips (COP) a few years back, PSX has quickly become one of the downstream industrys biggest players. Refiners earn profits based on the difference between feed stock costs (Think oil and natural gas prices) and the price for refined products such as gasoline, jet fuel and heating oil. Those inputs remain low, and Phillips 66 is minting cash as a result.

Banking, as a whole, is another sector which will benefit from a higher interest rate scenario. It is here that Berkshire will benefit from its large investments in publicly listed financial institutions. As of Sept 30, 2016, Berkshire’s investments in public financial institutions, at $42 Billion, accounted for 33% of the total holdings in public listed companies. The stocks of most large financial institutions have rallied since the election results were declared. WELLS FARGO & CO’s earnings per share improvement from the most recent quarter was slightly positive. The company has demonstrated a pattern of positive earnings per share growth over the past two years. We feel that this trend should continue. During the past fiscal year, WELLS FARGO & CO increased its bottom line by earning $4.10 versus $3.89 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($4.16 versus $4.10).

Finally on Friday, the banks begin to report. This is a group that benefits both from President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed deregulation and from rising interest rates. Cramer was bullish on JPMorgan and Bank of America (BAC) , but held Wells Fargo (WFC) , another Action Alerts PLUS name, as his favorite in the group.

Fortunately, when it comes to the oil exploration and production company, Cimarex Energy (XEC) , investors received both sides on Friday. When analysts go head-to-head, investors win, Cramer said, as an analyst at Wells Fargo (WFC) downgraded Cimarex on the same day that Goldman Sachs (GS) upgraded it.

Best Canadian Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc(VRX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Bond prices were much lower early in the day, with yields up by nearly 10 basis points. But fixed income has rallied back (reducing the drop by half on the day). Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) , more weakness. Large pharma lower, led by Eli Lilly (LLY) . Old tech lags, with International Business Machines (IBM) , Intel (INTC) , Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Microsoft (MSFT) all lower. Media roughed up a bit (CBS (CBS) and Comcast (CMCSA) ). The Ugly
Gold down another $23 to $1,188 (SPDR Gold Trust ETF (GLD) down $2.25). Urban Outfitters (URBN) down $5. NOTE: There will be no “Takeaways” today!   Happy Thanksgiving. Position: Long GLD small, SDS large, JCP large; short SPY, CSCO, CAT small, IWM, TLT small.

We noted earlier that Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX) has popped today after selling assets for more than $2 billion, beginning what many expect to be just the first round of such sales. BMO’s Gary Nachman notes that Valeant had received “a solid price” for its assets. He explains:

The first transaction is the sale of Dendreon (Provenge) to Sanpower Group for $820mn in cash. Provenge is a treatment for prostate cancer and is not core to Valeant; thus, we are not surprised by this asset sale. We estimate Provenge sales of $306mn for 2016, which translates to a multiple of ~2.7x.Valeant has been struggling to accelerate Provenge since it acquired the product, and given that the company does not have a real oncology presence we think this deal makes a lot of sense.

The second transaction is the sale of CeraVe, AcneFree and AMBI to L’Oreal for $1.3bn in cash. These products are OTC skincare brands that we believe are core to Valeant’s dermatology/OTC business; thus, this deal is more surprising to us. However, with annual combined sales for the three products of $168mn, that translates to a multiple of ~7.7x. We think that is a good price and demonstrates Valeant’s willingness to part with some core assets if the valuation makes sense. We view that as a smart business decision given the urgency forValeant to pay down its significant $30bn debt level more aggressively…

There is still more to go with asset sales, but we view this as a good start for Valeant.

Shares of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International have gained 5.5% to $16.19 at 2:02 p.m. today. That’s a solid gain, but less thanthe 12% rise in pre-open trading, and the 8.8% rise at 10:27 a.m.

Sometimes it’s better to raise funds when you can vs. when you have to. Look no farther than Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) , which is in a massive hole of debt and trades below $20 per share. It sure would have been nice to raise capital in a secondary offering with the stock over $200 per share for six months throughout 2015.
