Best Canadian Stocks For 2015

Reuters has come out with a story, which, if true, would seem improbably. Apparently Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO), Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), and Europe’s SAP have considered buying Blackberry (NASDAQ: BBRY). Alternatively, Blackberry could be smashed into pieces and sold off for junk.

Blackerry’s stock has not been able to hold the mark of $9, a bid made by Canadian finance firm Fairfax. There are two concerns about whether the bid can be completed. The first is that Fairfax will not be able to close a deal because if cannot raise the money. The other is that due diligence will prove that Blackberry’s future is more terrible that has already been imagined.

As a side show, several private equity firms which include Cerberus (the former owner of Chrysler) have asked for data from Blackberry.

It is nearly impossible to make the case that a company which is imploding as rapidly as Blackberry could have any value, even those its enterprise unit remains viable.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was dragged down by Coca-Cola (KO), which fell 4.5% to $37.18 this week after its fourth-quarter earnings report lacked fizz, and Wal-Mart (WMT), which dropped 3.5% after it offered below-consensus guidance and said it would pursue a small-store strategy. The S&P 500′s big losers included US Steel (X), which plunged 8.2% after the US decided that South Korea hadn’t sold steel pipes below cost, Waste Management (WM), which fell 6.1% to $40.99 after lower-than-forecast guidance caused investors to dump its share like garbage, and Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF), which dropped 5.1% to $21.97 as analysts debated whether the iron miner had done enough to turn itself around.

  • [By Victor Selva] ant with a long-held dominance in the American market. Instead, I would choose to go long on Gerdau SA (GGB), the second-largest producer in the sector.

    Why Not No. 1?

Brazil-based Gerdau has three main advantages. Size – though it’s a strong pro – is not necessarily one of them. To start with, Gerdau is a highly integrated company, with annual iron ore production capacity totaling 11.5 million metric tons, enabling it to be over 80% and 40% self-sufficient in Brazil and the U.S., respectively, and thus hedging itself from volatility in raw material prices.

Second, the company has a relatively modern fleet of furnaces, mainly composed of electric arc furnaces (EAFs), which are more energy-efficient than traditional blast furnaces and should result on a more flexible supply.

Last, the location is also a positive factor: with a high geographical diversification, Gerdau has still managed to maintain a strong leadership in the markets where it operates (particularly in Brazil and the U.S.). This allows it, on the one hand, to supply many different markets and therefore reduce risks of local economic underperformances and, on the other hand, to profit from low-cost labor in Brazil. In addition, the upcoming sporting events – 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics – are expected to generate a strong inflow of investments in infrastructure in the country, with Gerdau as a potential beneficiary of this.

In spite of being the biggest worldwide, I believe that ArcelorMittal doesn’t count with these characteristics. Further, as players in the industry are so atomized, being the No. 1 producer implies having only 6% of the global market share, which doesn’t give ArcelorMittal a superior bargain power than its peers. And though it’s still a very diversified and vertically integrated group, its costs will tend to be higher than those of Gerdau, since its furnaces are primarily blast furnaces and its labor expenses are higher as

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tomi Kilgore]

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan(POT) rose 0.5%, Mosaic(MOS) gained 0.1% and Intrepid Potash(IPI) climbed 0.7%. In addition, CF Industries Holdings(CF) tacked on 1.4% and Agrium(AGU.T) advanced 1.1%.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Canpotex, the cartel’s rival North American potash marketing association, comprised of Mosaic (NYSE: MOS  ) , PotashCorp (NYSE: POT  ) , and Agrium (NYSE: AGU  ) , is a major supplier of potash to Brazil, with some analysts estimating it owns 38% of the market. In years past, Latin America — primarily the Brazilian market — has comprised as much as 26% of Canpotex’s potash sales.

  • [By Jim Jubak]

That’s certainly not good news for such agriculture stocks as fertilizer producers Potash of Saskatchewan (POT), Mosaic (MOS), and Yara International (YARIY). And it’s not good news for Deere for 2014, as a whole, either. The company lowered guidance for the quarter that ends in April to sales of $9.65 billion, versus the current Wall Street consensus of $9.89 billion. That would represent a 6% drop in sales in the quarter.

Best Canadian Stocks For 2015: Goldcorp Incorporated(GG)

Goldcorp Inc. engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and operation of precious metal properties in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. It produces and sells gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. The company was founded in 1954 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jim Jubak]

Gold reserves fell by 8%. That is a relatively small reduction, in comparison to those being declared by other gold miners recently—Goldcorp (GG), for example, declared a 15% reduction in reserves. Yamana Gold has been relatively aggressive in cutting the price assumptions it uses in calculating reserves (at $950 an ounce versus $1,300 an ounce at Goldcorp), so the low price of gold in 2013 has relatively less effect on Yamana’s reserve calculations.

  • [By Jim Jubak]

I’ll be doing exactly that kind of pruning and buying, in another week or so, with the two gold mining stocks, Goldcorp (GG) and Yamana Gold (AUY) that I own in my Jubak’s Picks portfolio.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Gold miners are getting a boost today from solid earnings from the likes of Barrick Gold (ABX), Goldcorp (GG) and Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM). The exception: Kinross Gold (KGC), which missed earnings forecasts and cut its reserves.

One under-$10 business services player that looks poised for a run higher is Higher One (ONE), which provides technology-based refund disbursement, payment processing and data analytics services to higher education institutions and students. It also provides banking services to campus communities. This stock has been hit hard by the bears so far in 2013, with shares down by 26%.

If you take a look at the chart for Higher One, you’ll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last three months, with shares plunging from its high of $11.93 to its recent low of $6.97 a share. During that downtrend, shares of ONE were consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of ONE have recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $7.05 to $6.97 a share. This stock has now started to rebound sharply off that double bottom and move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ONE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $7.85 a share and then once it clears its 50-day moving average at $8.11 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 196,360 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ONE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9 to its 200-day moving average of $9.77 a share. This stock could even tag $11 a share if that 200-day gets taken out with volume.

Traders can look to buy ONE off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $7.39 a share, or below $7 a share. One can also buy ONE off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
