After days of stormy weather threatened to deflate holiday parades, Thanksgiving beamed clear and cold for colorful balloons, quiet feasting and a bracing start to the holiday shopping season.
At Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, 16 giant balloons flew, despite 26 mph winds along the route. Stormy weather earlier in the week threatened to ground the characters for the first time since 1971. Handlers held the balloons, including Snoopy and Buzz Lightyear, fairly close to the ground in tree-lined areas.
The leash was shorter in Philadelphia. At the 6ABC Dunkin Donuts Thanksgiving Parade, winds gusting to 28 mph limited the use of parade balloons to the Eakins Oval near the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The biggest stars weren’t always puffed up. In Detroit, the parade grand marshal was Jim Leyland, the former Tigers baseball manager. He told WDIV-TV he “certainly would have liked” a World Series parade last seen in 1984, but he retired after the team lost the American League championship to the Boston Red Sox.

Insurance companies have created an entire industry based upon risk, and except for AIG (NYSE: AIG ) during the financial crisis, it has worked out pretty well. So, it’s not a stretch to imagine a large life insurer like Canada’s Sun Life Financial (NYSE: SLF ) assuming the pension liability for the Canadian Wheat Board’s defined benefit plan in a recent $147 million deal, the first such accord in Canada’s history.

Stocks bounced back from yesterday’s losses–and it was blue chips like International Business Machines (IBM), Johnson & Jonson (JNJ), Caterpillar (CAT), Merck (MRK) and 3M (MMM) that led the market higher.
- [By Jeff Reeves]
The stock is a rather boring chemicals player, focusing on dyes and polyurethanes among other things. It’s a fraction of the size of larger peers DuPont (DD), 3M (MMM) and Dow Chemical (DOW) but also happens to be a better value based on future earnings; the forward price-to-earnings ratio of Huntsman is about 9.1 right now vs. 14 or higher for these large-cap chemical companies.

Yes, according to the folks at Morgan Stanley, who think the falling price of copper could hit General Electric (GE), and 3M (MMM), too.
As we all know by now, copper has fallen recently on concerns about China’s economic strength–its dropped 7% in March through Friday’s close and is down 12% this year. On first glance, that would appear to be good news for General Electric, 3M and Lennox International, which purchase a lot of copper, so would benefit from lower prices.

- [By Fede Zaldua]
According Citigroup’s analysts its about time to start accumulating Mechel’s (MTL) shares. The reason for the sharp upgrade (from sell to buy) was Mechel’s recent deal with some of its creditors to ease part of the company’s huge debt burden. More specifically, the Russian metals and mining company managed to seal a deal with the state controlled VTB Group through which it managed to get covenant holidays and a debt restructuring. That said, I don’t think Mechel is out from the woods and I do not think its time to buy the company’s shares, even when the are down by 67% year-to-date (ytd).

Relatively weak demand for thermal coal in China has pushed coal prices lower in Australia. That’s a problem for big miners like Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO ) , BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP ) , and Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU ) . However it could add to the allure of uranium miner Cameco (NYSE: CCJ ) .
- [By The Energy Report]
DS: Two of our top picks are Cameco Corp. (CCJ) and Ur-Energy Inc. (URG). For Cameco, we’ve got a $25/share target and an outperform rating. This company is the industry’s go-to, the blue chip uranium company. It’s organically growing very low-cost operations, which are for the most part in very safe jurisdictions. It has a lower-risk approach to contracts, with a targeted pricing mix of about 40% fixed-pricing and 60% market-related pricing in the contract book. The company’s got a solid balance sheet. We think it’s going to end Q3/13 with about $800M in working capital and another $2 billion [$2B] in undrawn lines of credit. It’s also diversified across the nuclear fuel chain, with exposure not only to its core uranium mining business but also with nuclear fuel services, like conversion and fuel fabrication. It’s got a stake in the Bruce nuclear power plant as well as a newly bolted-on uranium trading business, so it’s quite diversified. On top of that, Cameco pays a 2% dividend. We think it offers a very attractive risk/reward proposition at these levels.
- [By Jim Wallingford]
Cameco (CCJ) was created in 1988 through the merger of two Canadian crown (government-owned) corporations. It’s IPO debuted on the Toronto exchange in 1991 and a NYSE listing occurred in 1996. Weekend news likely prompts a negative reaction Monday, but Tues-Wed could go either way. GM stock could respond well if March share meets/beats expectations and if GM were to make adequate statements explaining concerns and offering remedies (OnStar can play role here). A sub-17% share and/or more negative revelations could pressure the stock further. We enter the week with a buy-on-weakness approach but acknowledge that this latest escalation adds ST market share risk. Thus, we also look to add positions in Buy-rated Ford (F) (possible ST share gains) and [American Axle & Manufacturing (AXL)] (pulled back + Q2 schedules appear intact).
