5 Best Low Price Stocks To Buy Right Now

Yesterday, Jefferies’ started JPMorgan (JPM) and Bank of America (BAC) with Buy ratings and Citigroup (C) at Neutral. Now it’s Nomura’s turn, as the Japanese investment bank launches coverage of those banks and adds Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS) to boot.

Nomura’s Steven Chubak and Sharon Leung expect investors to be focused on three themes in 2014: capital requirements, the potential to increase return on equity and the ability to return capital to shareholders. They explain how that plays out for the big five:

Our analysis indicates that Citigroup and Bank of America are best prepared for a
tougher capital regime. Significant excess capital generation / payout potential and
higher “normalized” ROEs (i.e., returns on required capital) support our Buy ratings, and imply the potential for significant share upside [30% for Citigroup, 14% for Bank of America].

In 1917, the two major aircraft manufacturers were forced into a patent pool that would offer modest licensing terms for prospective upstarts. By this point, the Wrights were out of the industry. Wilbur had died years earlier, and Orville had sold his stake to outside investors, leaving Curtiss with an easier path to the dominance previously denied him. The Wrights’ reputation was badly damaged, and competition came to the industry despite their efforts. Years later, on the eve of the Great Depression, Curtiss gained a final measure of victory when his company and the Wrights’ namesake business merged to become Curtiss-Wright (NYSE: CW  ) , which was at the time the largest aviation company in the United States. This company was also briefly a part of the Dow (from 1928 to 1930), making it the first aviation component in the index’s history.

The price of Credit-Default Swaps (CDS) used to insure US government debt against the possibility of default climbed to 35.5 basis points Wednesday. That was the highest level in six months, and up from 32 basis points on Friday, September 27. But that level is still well below the 62 basis points it cost to insure US government debt against default at the time of last debt ceiling battle, in the summer of 2011. That was the highest level since the global financial crisis. (What this means is that an investor would pay 62,000 euros a year to insure 10 million euros of US Treasuries against a default in the next five years. The contract is denominated in euros to offset the impact of a default on the US dollar.) This insurance is getting more popular too, with these CDS contracts ranking as the fifteenth most traded of the contracts tracked by the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. in the week through Sept. 27. That’s up from a rank of 147th for the previous week.

Tile Shop Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTS) managed to recover almost 12% on Friday to $14.50, but this one tanked on accusations of having third party transactions that would have inflated the company sales. Shares were down almost 40% on Thursday to $12.95 after having closed at $21.22 the day before. Now there are investigations and everyone is scared despite the company denying the claims and despite the company reaffirming its guidance. This one even traded 19 million shares on Thursday and 20 million on Friday, versus an average of what would be closer to 500,000 or so before the news. Anything tied to “accounting irregularities” sends investors running and brings the regulators and lawyers in.
