In our last article we said Frontier Communications’ (FTR) major challenge is to stop the continuous bleed in revenue. Frontier Communications released their 2013 first quarter results on May 6. Based on the revenue challenge ahead of them this article will limit the discussion to the following:
Revenue trendEffects on FCF estimatesConclusion
We’ll start with the trends projected from our last article through the period ending December 2012 then compare this to recent results. The graph measures management’s efforts to bend the curve upward.

Now that integration is behind them, it’s reasonable to expect their performance to improve but how that will influence revenue performance beyond the current trend is yet to be known. We would not have expected one quarter to produce drastic changes but indicate whether the curve is being nudged up or down, however the first quarter produced a surprise. Residen tial revenue was trending as expected but the business revenue appears close to going off the rails by deviating far from the trend line:

Waste Management Inc.(WM) said its third-quarter earnings fell 7% as the trash hauler and recycler works to cut its corporate overhead costs amid tepid pricing.
- [By Damian Illia]
During 2008, Republic Services and Allied Waste merged to create a strong company which could compete with number-one waste management company Waste Management Inc. (WM). It is true this industry has a rather constant nature, as trash volume increases with population growth, urban construction, industrial production and commercial activity. Still, the macroeconomic context during 2008 affected the recently-merged company, having to deal with lower waste volumes and intense price competition. Nevertheless, after this bumpy beginning, the company reached a good profitability. And, although it came to sustain average growth on both gross and operating margins, this tendency has recently decelerated with this margins underperforming in 2012 and 2013.

Furthermore, the company has a wide economic moat largely stemming from three factors: its efficient scale, its high switching costs and its intangible assets. Of the 20 commercial hazardous-waste landfills operational in the U.S., the majority are run by US Ecology and its main competitors Waste Management Inc. (WM), and Clean Harbors Inc. (CLH). With barriers to entry stemming from regulatory permits, and a limited market size, ECOL has managed to achieve an efficient scale in the market with five hazardous waste-sides. The company’s intangible assets consist of long-term regulatory permits, which enable US Ecology to posses a “gatekeeper privilege” regarding barriers to new entrants. In addition, customer switching costs are high, thus further adding to the firm’s ability to sustain growth in the long term.

Show me the money!
Starting us off this week is refuse and recycling giant Waste Management (NYSE: WM ) , which on Friday divvied out $0.375 per share to investors, a $0.01 jump from its payout in the previous quarter. Waste Management’s business has been hit recently by weaker commodity prices that hurt its recycling margins, along with consolidation in the refuse business which is also pressuring margins. However, as the clear market-share leader in refuse, a necessity-based business, it continues to wield impressive pricing power that can be used to slowly grow its bottom line. Waste Management’s 3.6% yield should remain an attractive lure for income-seeking investors.

One biopharmaceutical player that’s quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Zalicus (ZLCS), which discovers and develops treatments for patients suffering from pain and immuno-inflammatory diseases. This stock has been destroyed by the bears over the last three months, with shares down by a whopping 81%.
If you take a look at the chart for Zalicus, you’ll notice that this stock gapped down sharply lower during last November, with shares falling from $4.83 to under $1.50 a share with heavy downside volume. Following that gap down, shares of ZLCS have tag a new low of 88 cents per share. This stock has now started to trend sideways over the last few weeks, with shares moving between $1.05 on the downside and $1.43 on the upside. Shares of ZLCS are spiking sharply higher today and taking out some near-term overhead resistance at $1.22 a share. That move is quickly pushing this stock within range of triggering a major breakout trade.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ZLCS if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.22 to $1.43 a share, and then once it clears its gap down day high of $1.45 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 1.70 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ZLCS will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from last November that started at $4.83 a share. This stock could easily hit $2 to $2.50 a share if it gets into that gap with volume.
Traders can look to buy ZLCS off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right around some key near-term support at $1.05 a share. One can also buy ZLCS off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
