Shares of Kraft Heinz (KHC) are surging today after the food giant beat earnings forecasts. The news got investors, and analysts alike excited, with the shares rising 3.5% to a recent $88.57.
It also won over at least one skeptic. Deutsche Bank analyst Mario Contreras upgraded Kraft to a Buy and lifted his price target to $103 from $85, which suggests the packaged food company could gain another 16% in the next 12 months.
Kraft Heinz continues to deliver impressive EBIT growth and margin expansion. We had previously been cautious that the 3G approach could work in food. But based on the companys results and the number of peers following in their footsteps with ZBB and trade spend optimization efforts (though perhaps not to the same degree), it is clear that Kraft Heinz is doing something right.
Kraft Heinz was formed last year by a merger, with the aim of boosting profitability by cutting costs. CEO Bernardo Hees hails from the Brazilian private-equity firm 3G Capital Partners, the former owner of H.J. Heinz and well known for running lean operations.
