Tesla Motors (TSLA) garnered a ton of goodwill among investors with the successful unveiling of the Model 3 last week. Today, the upstart automaker squandered some of it after reporting fewer deliveries during the first three months of the year than it had originally forecast.
Tesla has said it would deliver 16,000 cars during the first quarter but managed to deliver only 14,820, including 12, 420 Model S coups and 2,400 Model X SUVs. Tesla blamed the shortfall on a lack of parts during January and February and its own “hubris in adding far too much new technology to the Model X in version 1, insufficient supplier capability validation, and Tesla not having broad enough internal capability to manufacture the parts in-house,” according to the press release. It still expects to deliver between 80,000 and 90,000 cars in 2016.
