5 Best Canadian Stocks To Own For 2014

A couple of weeks ago, up-for-sale PC purveyor Dell (NASDAQ: DELL  ) offered Carl Icahn and Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ: IEP  ) $25 million to play nice in its bid for the company. The move was an olive branch from Dell’s board, wisely trying to avoid a proxy battle involving the company’s already frustrated shareholders and other potential suitors, including founder Michael Dell. Though he didn’t take the bribe, Icahn and Dell reached an agreement — a sort of Rules of Engagement for the buyout procedure. The deal should protect investors, while still enabling the board to shop the company to the best bidder. Here’s what you need to know.

Say uncle
Carl Icahn is well known for pushing corporate board buttons to get what he wants — it’s kind of how he built his empire. The investor builds formidable stakes in his target companies to influence other shareholders and, ultimately, the company decision makers.

While many companies pride themselves on not catering to activist demands, and subsequently subjecting shareholders to costly litigation, Dell seems adamant on keeping things peaceful. It started two weeks ago, when it offered its suitors a form of reimbursement for due diligence in exchange for a good, clean fight. Icahn had little interest in the measly $25 million, but he was willing to come to some terms with the board.

The economy is also expected to recover quickly from the storm’s devastation, making Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (NYSE: PHI) more attractive to long-term investors than other communications firms such as BCE (NYSE: BCE), AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ).

BCE (BCE) is the largest telecom operator in Canada … and sports one whopper of a dividend.

As should be no surprise, the traditional wired voice services segment continues to be weak for BCE, and that’s something we can expect in perpetuity. However, BCE has diversified into other businesses, such as broadband, IPTV, satellite television, radio and mobile, which is helping to smooth its transition.

China is set to ease the one child policy, something that could benefit Chinese stocks in general but be especially beneficial to insurance stocks like China Life Insurance Company Ltd (NYSE: LFC) and CNinsure Inc (NASDAQ: CISG) plus health care stocks like Mindray Medical International Ltd (NYSE: MR) and Concord Medical Services Hldg Ltd (NYSE: CCM). First, let’s be clear that China is NOT abolishing the one child policy as the changes will merely allow married couples to have two children if one spouse is an only child plus it will be up to China’s 34 province-level administrations to revise their laws and put the new policy into effect. Moreover, China’s family-planning bureaucracy employs more than 500,000 full-time workers and six million part-time workers all the way down to the village level to collect billions of dollars in fines and these bureaucrats have fought for years against policy changes – meaning they could throw up roadblocks if not placated. With that said, the insurance and health care sectors are two sectors with publicly Chinese stocks that look set to take advantage of the coming changes.

Brennan Linsley/APJob seekers at a job fair in Denver. HONG KONG — The U.S. unemployment rate will fall below 6 percent by the end of this year, a Federal Reserve official said Wednesday, offering a bullish view on the country’s economy after central bank comments sent shock waves through financial markets last week. James Bullard, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, said that the outlook for the U.S. economy is “quite good,” despite data from early in the year. “The biggest thing is that unemployment has come down more quickly than expected,” said Bullard, speaking on a panel at the annual Credit Suisse (CS) investor conference in Hong Kong. He added later during a question and answer session that more progress is needed in the labor market before U.S. policymakers can consider raising interest rates. Bullard is known to be one of the Fed’s more hawkish policymakers. He previously advocated for a rate hike as early as 2014, a stance he appears to have backed away from. U.S. monetary policy tightening took center stage last week after a two-day policy meeting, when the Fed said it expected to keep benchmark interest rates near zero for a “considerable time” after it wrapped up a bond-buying stimulus program, which it is widely expected to do toward the end of the year. Pressed on the statement at a news conference afterward, Fed Chairman Janet Yellen said the phrase “probably means something on the order of around six months or that type of thing.” Stocks and bonds immediately tumbled as traders took the statement to suggest rate hikes could come sooner than they had anticipated. Bullard has joined other Fed officials in playing down the “six months” comment from Yellen, saying it was in line with what the private sector was anticipating. He repeated that view Wednesday. The unemployment rate for February rose to 6.7 percent from a five-year low of 6.6 percent as Americans flooded into the labor market to search for work. But the r

The worst performer in the sector was NovaGold Resources (NYSEMKT: NG  ) , which fell 13% yesterday as it scrambles to make sense of its Donlin Gold project in Alaska, the biggest known undeveloped gold deposit anywhere.
