Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA  ) has made quite an impression – on investors and the general public – with its hot all-electric Model S sedan. But there’s a catch: Toyota’s new ride won’t have batteries. Instead, it’ll be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. In this video, Fool.com contributor John Rosevear looks at Toyota’s latest announcement – and at the prospects for fuel cells as a technology to rival Tesla’s battery-powered electrics.

Suntory Beverage & Food Limited. A soft drinks company with an integrated platform in four key regions (Japan, Europe, Oceania and Asia), Japan based Suntory Beverage & Food acquired Beam Inc (NYSE: BEAM) for $16 billion (a 25% premium) earlier this year (the sixth-largest ever in the beverage industry) to form the world’s third largest premium spirits company. Beam Suntory’s brands or products include the flagship Jim Beam bourbon and Yamazaki Japanese whisky, as well as world renown premium brands including Maker’s Mark and Knob Creek bourbons, Hakushu and Hibiki Japanese whiskies, Teacher’s, Laphroaig, and Bowmore Scotch whiskies, Canadian Club whisky, Courvoisier cognac, Sauza tequila, Pinnacle vodka and Midori liqueur. Beam Suntory generates annual worldwide sales of approximately $4.6 billion (excluding excise taxes). The deal was made in part because of Japan’s aging population means Japanese companies need to look overseas for growth while a strong Yen last year has helped to fuel acquisitions. It should be noted though that while Suntory Beverage & Food Limited’s stock does trade on the OTC in the USA, volume over the past two months has ranged from a low of 9,740 shares to a high of 761,630 shares. On Tuesday, Suntory Beverage & Food Limited rose 1.42% to $19.33 (STBFY has a 52 week trading range of $15.25 to $19.43 a share) for a market cap of $11.78 billion plus the stock is 18.9% since the start of the year and up 13.7% since October 2013.

Another notable case is the spinoff of Fortune Brands Home & Security (NYSE: FBHS  ) from Beam (NYSE: BEAM  ) in 2011. Fortune Brands Home & Security shares have climbed at a much faster clip than Beam’s shares since then.

When Diageo’s CEO Ivan Menezes declared last quarter that the company would not be buying Beam Inc. (BEAM) in order to boost its bourbon and tequila portfolio, it became clear that the firm was well off as it is. And I applaud management’s decision to hold back, because this firm’s unmatched spirit portfolio combined with its vast distribution network make it a solid global market leader. Although the company operates in 180 countries, its particularly strong position in the U.S. market is highly beneficial, as this is the most profitable spirits market worldwide. The distribution, handled by 2,800 exclusive salespeople that only attend the company’s namesake brands, is highly profitable, resulting in domestic operating margins of almost 40%. Also, these distributor relationships cover 80% of the company’s U.S. volume, making for a business model that would be very difficult for new market entrants to duplicate.

Beam Inc.(BEAM) said that federal antitrust regulators have given clearance for the spirits company’s takeover by Suntory Holding Ltd. Beam said Wednesday that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has granted early termination of the necessary waiting period to review Beam’s proposed acquisition by Suntory.

Small cap Sodastream International Ltd (NASDAQ: SODA), an Israeli based developer, manufacturer and marketer of home beverage carbonation systems, has attracted its share of hype over both its products and its stock, but could other small cap water stocks like Primo Water Corporation (NASDAQ: PRMW), Puresafe Water Systems Inc (OTCMKTS: PSWS) and Alkaline Water Company Inc (OTCBB: WTER) attract a similar following? After all, Sodastream International has managed to create a significant amount of buzz from consumers, investors and even short sellers because it’s the world’s largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of home carbonation systems as its brands are sold in over 60,000 retail stores in 45 countries.
