Pick a small-cap biotech company, any small-cap biotech company, and you could be picking the winning lottery ticket if its cutting-edge research pans out. And if it doesn’t? Well, then you could end up like StemCells (STEM), which reported lackluster trial data and announced that it would be winding down. Maxim’s Jason Kolbert and Jason McCarthy explain:
Surprising news came this morning that StemCells will terminate the companys Phase II Pathway Study in spinal cord injury (SCI). The decision follows a review of data from the Interim Analysis Data Monitoring Committee. The company stated: “While the results showed overall improvement in patients treated with the companys proprietary cells, the magnitude of the effect and the perceived trend of the effect over time did not justify continuing the study or exploring the variability in the initial patient observations, given the financial resources available to the company.”
The company recently decided not to pursue the dry AMD study, leaving the SCI study as the principal performance driver. With the study now halted the company is in limbo, as the clinical requirements (based on the signal) call for a larger study outside the scope of the company’s ability to finance it ($5.5M in cash remaining)…given the news, we are downgrading our rating to Hold, from Buy. We are also removing our previous $3.00 price target. The stock price has now fallen to $0.60 (market capitalization of $7M), and it’s not clear what residual value (IP) remains…

Citigroup’s Beth Kite calls Nu Skin Enterprises’ (NUS) earnings and guidance “awfully disappointing.” She explains why:
“Frustrating” Describes 4Q15 & 2016 Guidance:Nu Skin (i) reported 4Q15 EPS of $0.62, 11 cents below consensus and us, and (ii) lowered 2016 EPS guidance, from $3.25-$3.40 to $2.40-$2.60.Nu Skin had three LTO’s in 4Q152 succeeded and 1 failed. The failure had far less to do with the product than with the sales strategy…
Is Guidance Too Conservative or Is It Really This Bad? We get that Me failed to sell well in South Korea with the 12-month cartridge commitment. But given the strength in reps globally, the strength of Youth from its two LTOs in 2H15, and good results from Me when sold in Japan without the 12-month commitment, we wonder if guidance is aggressive to the downside. Indeed, the word “conservative” was said a lot by mgmt on the brief earnings call when describing guidance revisions.
Maintaining Buy: While we now have less confidence in mgmt, from an external perspective, to forecast its results accurately, and from an internal perspective, to course correct quicklyi.e., why didn’t they drop the 12-month plan for Me in South Korea when it so obviously wasn’t workingwe are still confident in Youth & Me. The rep growth in South Asia/Pacific from Youth in 3Q led to better 4Q sales than we’d expected, Youth’s Americas LTO in 4Q drove lc sales up 26% YoY, and Me not only sold through in Japan in 4Q but also drove reps higher. We imagine that investors may have little patience or confidence in Nu Skin for a while, understandably. But the bar seems set fairly low now, so we are cautiously optimistic that Nu Skin can dig itself out of this hole as we go through 2016 and Me & Youth roll out more fully.
Shares of Nu Skin have tumbled 13% to $27.31 at 2:11 p.m. today.

Nu Skin Enterprises (NUS) is a direct selling company, which develops and distributes personal care products and nutritional supplements that are sold under the Nu Skin and Pharmanex brands. This stock closed up 5.4% at $92.96 in Monday’s trading session.
Monday’s Volume: 2 million
Three-Month Average Volume: 900,802
Volume % Change: 85%
From a technical perspective, NUS ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $85 with heavy upside volume. This move pushed shares of NUS into breakout and new 52-week-high territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $88.20 to $89.69. This move also pushed shares of NUS above the upper-end of its recent range that saw the stock trend between $82 to just above $89.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NUS as long as it’s trending above support at $85 and then once it sustains a move or close above Monday’s high of $93.33 with volume that this near or above 900,802 shares. If we get that move soon, then NUS will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $100 to $105.

On Thursday, The Gap Inc. (GPS) released its sales figures for August, posting an increase in monthly net sales from last year’s period ending August 25th.
The San Francisco, CA-based clothing company announced sales of $1.23 billion for the four-week period ending August 31, which was up from last year’s figure of $1.2 billion.
There were 53 weeks in Gap’s fiscal 2012, and due to this the comparable sales for August 2013 are compared to the period ending September 1, 2012. Though comparable sales were up 2% for this August, this is far below last year’s August comps, which boasted a 9% increase.
Gap’s shares were down 16 cents, or .39%, at market close today. YTD, the company’s stock is up more than 30%.

Gap Inc (NYSE: GPS) reported a 6 percent drop in its same-store sales for March 2016, versus to a 2 percent gain during the same period last year. The company saw net sales for the five-week period ended April 2 fall around 6.5 percent on a year-over-year basis to $1.43 billion. Gap shares tumbled 8.78 percent to $25.26 in the after-hours trading session.

Shares of Gap (GPS) have jumped nearly 5% today but it’s hard to find anyone who’s excited by its same-store-sales beat (Gap reported that sales at stores existing for at least 13 months had dropped 6%, less bad than the 7.2% drop forecast by analysts). This take from Guggenheim’s Howard Tubin and Paola Duguet is typical:
Ongoing traffic headwinds were likely to blame for the soft results. However, management noted that business improved leading into Memorial Day weekend. We believe the arrival of spring-like weather across several parts of the country likely contributed to the improvement.
We are seeing an improvement in the most recent assortments at Gap and Banana Republic. At Gap, we are seeing a greater use of bright colors and more variety with regard to silhouette. We would call out the double-strap print maxi dress and 戮 sleeve eyelet top as examples. At Banana Republic, we are seeing more key items, commercially friendly prints, and democratic fits. We would highlight the selection of featherweight merino wool knits and capsule of neutral-colored snakeskin printed items as styles that we expect to be popular among shoppers. However, these improvements are not yet broad-based enough to meaningfully improve the comp trend, in our view.
We maintain our wait and see approach with Gap shares. All three divisions are now posting negative comps despite efforts by management to revamp business. We remain Neutral until we see managements many initiatives begin to gain traction.
The problem: Waiting for initiatives to “gain traction” is a recipe for missing the move higher in Gap shares. Right now, Gap trades at 9.9 times 12-month earnings forecasts, near its lowest on record. And after gaining 4.6% to $19.17 at 1:41 p.m. today, it’s back at levels last seen in 2012.
None of that means that Gap shares will be a winner. But for investors looking for a s
