10 Best Sliver Stocks To Invest In 2014

As my colleague Michael Aneiro noted, the Fed spooked markets with a hint of an earlier rate hike. But not every stock’s a loser.

Reuters

Sure, the S&P 500 has fallen 0.9% to 1,855.85 today at 3:17 p.m. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has dropped 149 points, or 0.9%, t0 16187.11, and just four components are up on the day.

But there are winners–and they’re any stock that’s helped by higher rates. There are mutual fund companies with big money-market fund businesses, who wouldn’t be forced to run these funds for what is essentially free. Federated Investors (FII), for instance, has jumped 2.1% to $27.99. Life insurance companies, too, are rising because they should be able to earn more on their investments. MetLife (MET), for instance, has risen 1.3% to $53.03.

Even the discount brokers would benefit. In a report released yesterday, Bernstein’s Brad Hintz noted that for every percentage point increase in rates, Charles Schwab’s (SCHW) net revenue would grow 4%, while eliminating fee waivers would add another 12%. Similarly, every percentage point rate increase would add 11% to 15% to TD Ameritrade’s (AMTD) pre-tax income.

Toby Talbot/AP NEW YORK — A voluntary effort by the world’s largest food and beverage companies to remove billions of calories from the products they sell in the United States to help combat the nation’s obesity epidemic has far exceeded its five-year goal, according to an independent evaluation released Thursday. In May 2010, 16 of the nation’s biggest food and beverage companies, from Coca-Cola (KO) to Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), pledged to remove 1 trillion calories from the U.S. marketplace by 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015, compared with a 2007 baseline. In fact, as of 2012 they sold 6.4 trillion fewer calories, found an analysis by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “Reports like this, and the fact that they exceeded their commitment by fourfold, really shows that you can make progress in giving American families more healthy options,” said Larry Soler, president of the Partnership for a Healthier America, a non-profit chaired by first lady Michelle Obama. The group was formed in 2010 to work with the private sector on anti-obesity strategies. At the time, critics said the Partnership relied too heavily on the good will of the industry and couldn’t replace the role of tighter regulation on how food is manufactured and marketed. Such voluntary efforts by industry “are not a magic bullet,” said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America’s Health, a non-profit policy group. “Particularly with kids, there is a role for regulation” in reducing demand for unhealthy, high-calorie fare. It isn’t clear yet how the companies accomplished the dramatic calorie reduction, said UNC public health researcher Barry Popkin, who led the analysis funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s largest public health philanthropy. Some of the decline may have come from the recession, as financially strapped families cut back on junk food. When the pledge was announced, companies said they would substitute lower-calorie pro

And finally, Hormel. The stock fell after the CEO of Hillshire Brands (NYSE: HSH  ) said that his company will look to make some acquisitions in the coming year and focus more on chicken products as consumers begin to demand healthier options. It is clear that the competition will continue to intensify for Hormel in the coming months and years and, as Hillshire is still a smaller company, it could change very quickly if the acquisition-happy CEO goes on a shopping spree. With many of these food brands, it is all about shelf space and location within a store and, more times than not, the bigger the player, the better the location. Hormel investors shouldn’t be overly concerned today, but need to watch how things play out in the future.

Although the Hostess acquisition was high profile, Flowers has made many similar though smaller acquisitions in recent years, taking advantage of the fragmented bakery industry to pick off targets individually with attractive buyout offers. The move helped Sara Lee reap more money from its brand while giving Flowers more market share in the important California market.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images Google (GOOG) won a major victory in its fight against claims it illegally scanned private email messages to and from Gmail accounts, defeating a bid to unify lawsuits in a single group case on behalf of hundreds of millions of Internet users. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, Calif., on Wednesday refused to let the case proceed as a class action, which would have allowed plaintiffs to pool resources and put greater pressure on Google to settle. If individuals pursue their claims against the owner of world’s largest search engine, they’ll need to use their own financial resources to litigate. Email users claimed Google intercepted, read and mined the content of email messages for targeted advertising and to build user profiles. Legal experts including Stanford Law School Professor Deborah Hensler said before Wednesday’s ruling that while the plaintiffs faced difficulty joining forces, the case stood to potentially become the largest group lawsuit ever. The amount at stake could have reached into the trillions of dollars if, as the plaintiffs argued, each person was eligible for damages of $100 a day for violations of federal wiretap law. Koh’s ruling has implications for email privacy cases assigned to her that were filed last year against Yahoo (YHOO) and LinkedIn (LNKD), which also have hundreds of millions of users. Similarly giant cases have been brought against Facebook (FB) and Hulu as Web users challenge how companies monetize their data for the online advertising market that generated more than $40 billion in the U.S. last year. Koh found that the proposed classes of people in the Google case aren’t “sufficiently cohesive,” according to Wednesday’s ruling. Citigroup cited two potential catalysts for their upgrade, “First; Knight appears intent on resuming growth in ‘14 and may use an acquisition to get it. While it remains involved with USA Truck (NASDAQ: USAK), valuation sensitivity may prevent the deal from being complete, but Knight could refocus attention to another target. Second; we believe continued economic growth and Hours of Service restricted capacity could drive improvement in TL fundamentals, potentially aiding yield growth and margins.”

Despite what can best be described as a soft economy, small cap trucking stocks YRC Worldwide, Inc (NASDAQ: YRCW), Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ: ABFS), Frozen Food Express Industries, Inc (NASDAQ: FFEX), Saia Inc (NASDAQ: SAIA) and USA Truck, Inc (NASDAQ: USAK) have been trucking some pretty impressive returns since the start of the year. In fact, these small cap trucking stocks are up anywhere from 72% to 150% or so since the start of the year despite the slow economy. Certainly trucking stocks provide a good indicator of how the economy is doing, but might investors be jumping the gun by pushing up these trucking stocks?
