Investors have gotten their money’s worth out of Boston Scientific’s (NYSE: BSX ) stock lately. Shares of the medical device maker have surged by more than 30% in the past six months alone, rising higher despite the company’s troubles. Sales have fallen into a slump at Boston Scientific, led lower by the company’s cardiac rhythm management, or CRM, business, which produces everything from pacemakers to implantable defibrillators. This is an industry on the decline — Medtronic (NYSE: MDT ) , a leader in the medical device field, has seen its own CRM sales slump in recent quarters, while Boston Sci rival St. Jude Medical (NYSE: STJ ) has similarly had its top line hammered by its CRM division’s falling revenue.
Boston Scientific is more than just a cardiovascular device maker, however — and its smaller, growing divisions invite hope for the company’s future despite the slump in its core business. In this video, Motley Fool contributor Dan Carroll and health care analyst Max Macaluso discuss one of Boston Scientific’s hot growing businesses and why investors should pay attention to the company’s upcoming earnings report to see whether it’s making the right moves to turn around its lagging sales.

That leaves the only viable long-term strategy which has promise as mergers and acquisitions. Time Inc. did buy American Express Publishing recently. However, the revenue of the publisher of Travel + Leisure and Food & Wine is too insignificant to affect Time Inc.’s sales by any meaningful measure. Time Inc. has limited options if it wishes to make a large purchase within its own industry. Early this year, publisher Meredith Corp. (NYSE: MDP) had talks with Time Warner about buying most of Time Inc. Time Inc.’s management may have considered buying Meredith, but the market cap of the publisher of women’s magazines, which also holds broadcast properties, is $2.29 billion. Time Inc. would need to offer a large premium to the current share price to convince Meredith’s board that such a deal would be fair for shareholders. And Time Inc. is unlikely to gamble that sum of money to improve its revenue moderately. Alternatively, Time Inc. could try to b uy Meredith’s magazine assets.

For now, I continue to recommend investors maintain a cautious stance, focusing on the buying interest coming into safe-haven assets like U.S. Treasury bond and precious metals while booking profits in biotech stocks that have been red hot this month. The leveraged Direxion 3x Treasury Bond Bull (TMF) is up nearly 7% in my Edge Letter Sample Portfolio since it was added on Jan. 10. I just sold Tower Hill Mines (THM) and Rosetta Genomics (ROSG) for gains of 46% and 18% respectively.

With no revenues, and therefore no profits, International Tower Hill Mines Ltd (NYSEMKT:THM) shouldn’t qualify as “investment worthy” in any way, shape, or form. Indeed, the near-100% loss that THM shares have suffered since early 2011 might scare off even the gutsiest of traders. Yet, there’s something undeniably bullish about this stock right now.

The case for First Security Group (FSGI) is interesting. It is bank holding company that is obscure, cheap and unloved. As the company completed the recapitalization earlier this year, I think the market has been under-appreciating its potential to return to growth and profitability as a result of the much-needed recapitalization.

First Security Group (FSGI) operates as the holding company for FSGBank, which provides banking products and services to various communities in Tennessee and Georgia. This stock closed up 6.5% to $2.29 in Tuesday’s trading session.
Tuesday’s Range: $2.16-$2.30
52-Week Range: $1.30-$7.45

From a technical perspective, FSGI ripped higher here right above some near-term support levels at $2.14 to $2.12 with lighter-than-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of FSGI within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if FSGI manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.38 to $2.52 and then once it clears its 200-day moving average at $2.80 with high volume.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in FSGI as long as it’s trending above some key support levels at $2.14 to $2.12 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 509,606 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then FSGI will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from June that started at $5.08.
