If you visit your local grocery or health-food store, chances are you’ll see a section devoid of gluten products. If you don’t know what I’m talking about now, you will soon. The $2.6 billion gluten-free food market in the United States is expected to nearly double by 2015. The growth is being driven by the need to better serve individuals with gluten intolerance and celiac disease, who can’t properly digest gluten found in wheat, barley, and rye. While only 1% of all Americans are diagnosed with the autoimmune disease, as few as 10% of people living with the disease are formally diagnosed. The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center succinctly sums it up: “The number of Americans with celiac disease would fill 936 cruise ships. Passengers on 843 of the ships won’t know they have it.”

That means two things. The medical community has a lot of work to do to better diagnose patients (even those with mild cases), and the gluten-free market will continue to explode. Can you capture that growth while helping individuals with celiac disease? Of course you can. Here are several investment ideas in food and pharmaceuticals that are gluten-free.

Richard Drew/AP NEW YORK — The U.S. stock market is rigged in favor of high-speed electronic trading firms, which use their advantages to extract billions from investors, according to Michael Lewis, author of a new book on the topic, “Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt.” High-frequency trading is a practice carried out by many banks and proprietary trading firms using sophisticated computer programs to send gobs of orders into the market, executing a small portion of them when opportunities arise to capitalize on price imbalances, or to make markets. HFT makes up more than half of all U.S. trading volume. The trading methods and technology that make HFT possible are all legal, and the stock exchanges HFT firms trade on are highly regulated. But Lewis said these firms are using their speed advantage to profit at the expense of other market participants to the tune of tens of billions of dollars. “They are able to identify your desire to buy shares in Microsoft (MSFT) and buy them in front of you and sell them back to you at a higher price,” Lewis, whose book is available Monday, said Sunday on the “60 Minutes” television program. “This speed advantage that the faster traders have is milliseconds, some of it is fractions of milliseconds,” said Lewis, whose books include “The Big Short” and “Moneyball.” Those milliseconds can be valuable, making it possible to send around 10,000 orders in the blink of an eye. Darting in and out of trades, HFT firms make just fractions of a penny per trade, but the sheer speed and volume of their trading activity allows those that are successful to make significant profits. Proponents of HFT argue that the presence of such firms makes it easier for all market participants to find buyers and sellers for their trades, and that the speed at which HFT firms can detect and take advantage of pricing imbalances between different markets and assets leads to smaller bid-ask spreads. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 2.21 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CPRX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.87 to $3 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give CPRX a chance to re-test its 52-week high at $3.65 a share.

Traders can look to buy CPRX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $1.65 to $1.63 a share. One can also buy CPRX off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rura l areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee

We like energy, a sector that is benefiting Union Pacific (UNP). With limited pipelines, however, crude oil and petroleum derivatives have to get to refineries and ports somehow. With almost 32,000 rail miles linking both coasts and the Midwest with the Gulf ports, UNP is just the ticket. The $3.16 dividend is very attractive, as is the S&P “A” Quality Ranking.

With today’s 15% pop just staring you in the face, it would be tempting for current MeetMe Inc. (NYSEMKT:MEET) shareholders to lock their profit in and walk away. It would also be a mistake, though. See, while MEET is admittedly a volatile mess in the short run, for the long haul, there’s a lot more upside left to tap.

It’s not been easy to be a fan of MeetMe Inc. (NYSEMKT:MEET) since July of last year. In fact, sometimes it’s been downright painful to keep holding MEET. But, it was also worth it. With today’s big move, MeetMe shares have cleared a key hurdle, and they’ve done so for all the right reasons. Investors who’ve been cautiously waiting on the sidelines may want start wading in now.

To use a recent REIT example, take CommonWealth REIT. This is a large well established REIT that is valued in the market with one of the lowest multiples of FFO in the industry. The reason the company trades at a multiple roughly half its competitors, in my opinion, is the poorly aligned management incentive structure. The management of CommonWealth is contracted to an external management firm, Reit Management Research (RMR). Many of the trustees of CommonWeath are owners of RMR and serve on both boards RMR is primarily compensated by growing CWH’s assets which are under RMR’s management, not on stock price, FFO, or anything else that is closely aligned to generating shareholder returns. This has the perverse effect of motivating them to issue lots of equity and buy lots of buildings irrespective of the value add to CommonWealth shareholders. Neither the management company nor its employees have a significant amount of their income based on the performance of CommonWealth ‘s stock price. This has resulted in an activist, Corvex Capital, buying a significant position in the company and taking action to replace the board and the management team. The proxy advisory firm, ISS, has sided with the activist and recommended that shareholders vote out the current trustees. ISS notes, "Between 2007-2012 …while the CommonWealth management team increased assets by 198% of period-ending market cap – driving a significant increase in fees payable to management – Commonwealth’s share price – the measure of value appreciation for shareholders – fell by 68%." This is the poster child of misaligned management incentives.

In a perfect world, an investor could simply look at a company’s history and its plausible earnings forecasts, and jump in (or out) knowing the stock’s current price basically made sense with respect to past and future performance. We don’t live or trade in a perfect world though. In the world we’re actually in right now, most stocks, sectors, and industries have run up far beyond a justifiable value… perhaps except for hotel and lodging REIT stocks Host Hotels and Resorts Inc. (NYSE:HST), Strategic Hotels and Resorts Inc. (NYSE:BEE), and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE:PEB).

Hotel operator Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB  ) announced today its second-quarter dividend of $0.16 per share, the same rate it paid last quarter after raising the payout 33% from $0.12 per share.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Small-cap hotel investment REIT Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB) is setting up a similar pattern to the one in EXR — with a few exceptions.

PEB isn’t forming an ascending triangle; support isn’t in the same sort of uptrend in this stock. Instead, PEB is forming a rounding pattern with resistance at $28. Rounding patterns look just like they sound — they indicate a shift in control from sellers to buyers. While this setup is most common as a “bottoming” pattern, PEB’s price action doesn’t change the implications if shares can break out above $28. That’s our buy signal.

Whenever you’re looking at any technical price pattern, it’s critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles, rectangles and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what’s going on in this stock, but they’re not the reason it’s tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That resistance line at $28 is a price where there’s an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it’s a place where sellers have been more eager to take recent gains and sell their shares than buyers have been to buy. That’s what makes the move above it so significant — a breakout indicates that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level. Wait for that signal to happen before you jump into this stock.
