In one of its recent presentations (link opens PDF file) to the investing community, Gap (NYSE: GPS  ) lays out the retail landscape as it sees things. The company charts itself among competitors based on revenue and footprint. In the middle. Gap places its own brand moving up toward the higher-revenue brands, like H&M. Then, down at the bottom, are the small-footprint, low-revenue companies that Gap has already motored past.

On the slide, Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF  ) , Aeropostale (NYSE: ARO  ) , and American Eagle (NYSE: AEO  ) all seem to be fighting it out in the smaller space, labeled “Single- to low-double-digit operating margins.” That group may have a smaller footprint and lower revenue than Gap, but that doesn’t mean that investors should overlook it completely.

The grouping that Gap has laid out isn’t unfair. Of the three retailers, only American Eagle managed a positive move in comparable-store sales over the last year. American Eagle is also the only one to manage that low-double-digit operating margin, with Aeropostale hitting just 2.5% and Abercrombie coming in at 8.3%. As a reference point, Gap’s operating margin was 12.4% — which actually wasn’t much higher than American Eagle’s margin.

It owns a 50% interest in Deepwater Gateway, which owns the Marco Polo TLP located in 4,300 feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico. In July 2013, MRC Global Inc announced that it has completed the previously announced acquisition of the operating assets of Dan H. Brown, Inc., D/B/A Flow Control Products (Flow Control). In December 2013, MRC Global Inc acquired Flangefitt Stainless Ltd. Effective January 6, 2014, MRC Global Inc a unit of GS Capital Partners LP subsidiary of Goldman Sachs Group Inc’s Goldman Sachs & Co unit, acquired Stream AS.

The Company distributes products globally, including in PVF intensive, oil and natural gas exploration and production (E&P) areas, such as the Bakken, Barnett, Eagle Ford, Fayetteville, Haynesville, Marcellus, Niobrara and Utica shales in North America. Its Canadian subsidiary Midfield Supply ULC and its! subsidiaries (MRC Midfield), provides PVF products to oil and natural gas companies operating primarily in Western Canada, including the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, Alberta Oil Sands and heavy oil regions. It offers more than 150,000 stock keeping units (SKUs), including a range of PVF, oilfield supply, automation, instrumentation and other general and specialty industry supply products.

The Company is the majority owned subsidiary of PVF Holdings LLC. Its wholly owned subsidiary, McJunkin Red Man Corporation and its subsidiaries (MRC), are global distributors of pipe, valves, fittings and related products and services across each of the upstream (exploration, production and extraction of underground oil and gas), midstream (gathering and transmission of oil and gas, gas utilities, and the storage and distribution of oil and gas) and downstream (crude oil refining, petrochemical processing and general industrials) markets. North American Operations

The Company distributes PVF products, primarily used in applications in the energy infrastructure sector, from its global network of suppliers. The products it distributes are used in the construction, maintenance, repair and overhaul of equipments. The products include Valves and Specialty Products, Line Pipe, OCTG, Carbon Steel Fittings and Flanges and Stainless Steel and Alloy Pipe and Fittings and others. The products under valves and specialty products include ball, butterfly, gate, globe, check, needle and plug valves, which are manufactured fro m cast steel, stainless/alloy steel, forged steel, carbon st! eel or ca! st and ductile iron. Specialty products include lined corrosion resistant piping systems, valve automation and top work components used for regulating flow and on/off service, and a range of steam and instrumentation products used in various process applications within its refinery, petrochemical and general industrial sectors.

Carbon line pipe is used in high-yield, high-stress, abrasive applications, such as the gathering and transmission of oil, natural gas and phosphates. Line pipe is part of its tubular product category. OCTG is part of its tubular product category, includes casing (used for production and to line the well bore) and tubing pipe (used to extract oil or natural gas from wells) and is either classified as carbon or alloy depending on the grade of material. Carbon steel fittings and flanges include carbon weld fittings, flanges and piping components used primarily to connect piping and valve systems for the transmission of various liquids and g ases. These products are used across all the industries in which it operates. Stainless steel and alloy pipe and fittings include stainless, alloy and corrosion resistant pipe, tubing, fittings and flanges. These are used in the chemical, refining and power generation industries, as well as across all of the sectors in which the Company operates. Alloy products are principally used in high-pressure, high-temperature and high-corrosion applications typically seen in process piping applications.

The products under other category include natural gas distribution products, oilfield supplies, and other industrial products, such as mill and safety and electrical supplies. Natural gas distribution products include risers, meters, polyethylene pipe and fittings and various other components and industrial supplies used primarily in the distribution of natural gas to residential and commercial customers. It offers a range of oilfield and industrial supplies and completion equipment, and products offered include high density polyet! hylene pi! pe and fittings, valves, well heads, pumping units and rods. The Company’s Louisville airport product! s system ! consists of approximately 14 miles of eight- and six-inch pipeline, which delivers jet fuel from MPC’s Louisville, Kentucky refined product terminals to customers at the Louisville International Airport.

Other Major Midstream Assets

The Company’s butane cavern is located in Neal, West Virginia, across the Big Sandy River from MPC’s Catlettsburg, Kentucky refinery. This storage cavern has approximately 1.0 million barrels of storage capacity and is connected to MPC’s Catlettsburg refinery. Rail access to the storage cavern is also available through connections with the refinery.

The Company’s barge dock is located on the Mississippi River in Wood River, Illinois and is used both for crude oil barge loading and products barge unloading. The barge dock is connected to its Wood River tank farm by approximately two miles of 14-inch pipeline, which transfers crude oil from the tank farm to the dock, and two 10-inch pipelines, which are each approximately two miles long and transfer products and feedstocks from the dock to the tank farm. This dock generates revenue through a FERC tariff, which is collected for the transfer and loading/unloading of crude oil and products. It also owns tank farms located in Patoka, Martinsville and Wood River, Illinois and Lebanon, Indiana, which it uses for storing both crude oil and products. These storage assets are integral to the operation of its pipeline systems in those areas.

    This is a volume-dependent business and volume is booming. USA Compression Partners’ revenue was up 20% in 2012 and will be up that much or more when final numbers from 2014 come in. Third=quarter results were terrific: revenue was up almost 24% year over year and adjusted cash flow, the basis of the dividend, was up more than 29% year over year. The yield is currently 6.7% and will probably go higher. Ignore the P/E. This is a growth and dividend story. Take a look.

    The first MLP IPO of 2013 debuted on Jan. 15. USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC), which I mentioned in last week’s issue, provides compression services for the oil and gas industry. Units have advanced 36 percent since the IPO, and at the current price yield 7.3 percent.

    The day after the USA Compression Partners IPO, CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR) made its debut.  CVRR was spun off from CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), and both companies remain majority-owned by Carl Icahn. CVR Refining’s primary assets are two refineries located in Kansas and Oklahoma with a combined processing capacity of approximately 185,000 barrels per day (bpd). These refineries are strategically located near the major Cushing, Oklahoma shipment and storage hub, with easy access to discount ed feedstock from the nearby Permian basin, as well as the Bakken shale and Canadian oil sands.

    But refiners have struggled with diminished margins in 2013 because of a much lower Brent-WTI differential. After the recently concluded second quarter, CVRR declared a distribution of $1.35 per unit, bringing its per-unit distributions for the first half of the year to $2.93. At the same time, CVR Refining lowered its annual distribution target to a range of $4.10 to $4.80 per unit. This was lower than the outlook issued in March, when it foresaw annual distributions of $5.50 to $6.50. CVRR units slid on the news, and are presently trading slightly below the $25 IPO price. The lower end of the revised forecast implies distributions of $1.17 per unit in the second half of the year, for a forward annualized yield of 10 percent based on the recent $23.50 unit price.

    USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC) was the first MLP IPO of 2013, debuting on Jan. 15, and advancing 36 percent since. USAC is unique in the MLP space in providing compression services for the oil and gas industry. The way this works is that a natural gas producer, for example, will contract with USAC on a long-term fixed-fee basis to compress the natural gas so that it can be delivered via pipeline to customers. USAC installs compression equipment to move the gas from the well to its destination.
