10 Best Industrial Disributor Stocks To Watch For 2016

A few days back, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturing (CAAM) released the September China auto wholesale numbers which were pretty interesting to look at. Quite a bit of analysis is also possible from the declared shipment numbers, mainly with regard to demand for passenger vehicles. The numbers also gave an idea who is ruling the auto industry in China and who are the laggards. While the macro-environmental conditions in China are not too favorable to date, such impressive numbers do suggest that “all is shining” in the Chinese land with respect to the automotive sector. Let’s take a sneak peek into the numbers and try to make some analysis on the demand curve.

Mixed demand for passenger vehicles

September passenger vehicle sales remained positive, though it was slightly lower standing at 6.4% from what the consensus had expected. It appears that the reason behind this could probably be the readjustment of inventory by brands such as Volkswagen (VLKAY), Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) – all foreign brands ruling the Chinese soil.

One thing Legere appears to be familiar with is Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals — or BHAGs. Last year, he famously declared T-Mobile would edge out rival Sprint (NYSE: S  ) to be the third largest U.S. carrier by subscribers in 2014. While the numbers are still out for the final quarter, as of September, T-Mobile was within striking distance, trailing by just 2 million with 53 million subscribers to Sprint’s 55 million. For proper perspective, at the start of 2014, T-Mobile trailed by nearly 8.5 million subscribers.

This is bad news for the four major U.S. carriers — AT&T (NYSE: T  ) , Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) , T-Mobile U.S. (NYSE: TMUS  ) , and Sprint (NYSE: S  ) . While the first three continue to add postpaid phone subscribers, all are heavily reliant on smartphone subscribers to increase average revenue per subscriber.

  • [By Chris Neiger]

More than just the big carriers to fear
In the not-too-distant past, T-Mobile only had Verizon and AT&T to worry about — Sprint (NYSE: S  ) was losing customers left and right as the company struggled with poor network connections. Recently however, Sprint has begun to improve its network with a new 4G LTE rollout, and the company also launched an aggressive offer to cut new customers’ bills in half if they switch from Verizon or AT&T. So with its new LTE network, Sprint can offer a comparable $140 Verizon data plan for just $70 per month.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Several of our holdings posted strong returns this quarter. Real estate specialist JLL Inc. (JLL), previously known as Jones Lang LaSalle Inc., surged +15.73% due to a strong earnings report. Specifically, in late January the company reported better-than-expecte d (adjusted) earnings per share (EPS) of $3.33; the Street expected $3.09. Revenues topped forecasts, $1.5 billion rather than $1.3 billion. In addition, the company’s operating results were boosted by solid investment sales, facility management services and momentum in leasing revenues. Moreover, management signaled continued improvemen ts across its businesses. The market is still applying a cautiously cyclical set of expectations to this firm, but we believe its gradual growth is more secular in nature. 2. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) The REIT is another alternative vehicle that's gone mainstream in recent years. Hundreds of broad-based and specialized real estate companies and ETFs are available, and after a correction a few months ago, many are on the cheap side. Like any other alternative, this should be a seasoning for your portfolio and not the sauce itself. For most retail investors, a stake in an indexed fund like the SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSE: RWR) should be more than adequate, or look into the companies that provide services to the REIT industry like HFF (NYSE: HF) and Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL).

Last week, HNI Corp. (HNI) beat earnings forecasts and promptly fell 3.4%. Raymond James, however, thinks the selloff was undeserved and raised its rating on the office-furniture maker, helping HNI Corp. to make back its loss.

Raymond James analysts Budd Bugatch and Bobby Griffin explain why they upgraded HNI Corp.:

We are upgrading HNI to Outperform from a Market Perform rating and establishing a $36.00 price target following the company’s 1Q14 earnings release and management conference call. As stated in an earlier note, HNI delivered a “clean” 1Q14 EPS beat; and we are puzzled by Thursday’s trading activity. HNI historically trades at a premium to the office furniture peer group, but following the shares’ recent pullback (down ~3.5% on Thursday before the Good Friday holiday and down 14% YTD compared to +0.8% for the SPX YTD), this is no longer the case and gives us reason for a more constructive rating.

Shares of HNI Corp. have gained 4.9% to $35.17 at 1:45 p.m., while Steelcase (SCS) has risen 0.8% to $16.93, Knoll (KNL) has advanced 2.5% to $18.74 and Herman Miller (MLHR) has ticked up 0.3% to $30.57.

Small cap office furniture stock Steelcase Inc (NYSE: SCS) jumped 11.66% after beating earnings expectations, meaning it might be time to take a closer look at the stock along with potential office or commercial furniture stock peers like HNI Corp (NYSE: HNI), Knoll Inc (NYSE: KNL) and Virco Mfg. Corporation (NASDAQ: VIRC). After all, the performance of any company selling office or commercial furniture would tend to give some insights into the office or employment markets.
