CHICAGO (AP) — It’s an assertion that has been accepted as fact by droves of the unemployed: Older people remaining on the job later in life are stealing jobs from young people.
One problem, many economists say: It isn’t supported by a wisp of fact.
“We all cannot believe that we have been fighting this theory for more than 150 years,” said April Yanyuan Wu, a research economist at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, who co-authored a paper last year on the subject.
The theory Wu is referring to is known as “lump of labor,” and it has maintained traction in the U.S., particularly in a climate of high unemployment. The theory dates to 1851 and says if a group enters the labor market — or in this case, remains in it beyond their normal retirement date — others will be unable to gain employment or will have their hours cut.

US Energy (USEG), an independent energy company, focuses on the acquisition and development of oil and gas producing properties in the continental U.S. This stock closed up 6.9% to $3.53 in Thursday’s trading session.
Thursday’s Range: $3.29-$3.53
52-Week Range: $1.45-$4.06
Thursday’s Volume: 116,000
Three-Month Average Volume: 219,710
From a technical perspective, USEG bounced sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $3.27 and back above its 50-day moving average of $3.45 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $3.32, $3.21 and $3.27. Since finding buying interest at those levels, shares of USEG are now spiking higher and moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if USEG manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.65 to $3.80 with high volume.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in USEG as long as it’s trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.27 or at $3.21 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 219,710 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then USEG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $4.06. Any high-volume move above that level will then give USEG a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.60 to $5.

One recent example of how the shutdown wormed its way into earnings was a profit warning from Silicon Graphics International Corp. (SGI) . SGI cut its outlook, citing lost revenue from contracts that were frozen late in the September-ending quarter in the run-up to the shutdown. Shares of the large-scale computing company dropped nearly 10% on Friday following the late Thursday warning.

I went out on a limb last week, and now it’s time to see how that decision played out.
I predicted that Model N (NYSE: MODN ) would post a smaller loss than analysts were expecting. The provider of revenue management solutions has been a dud since going public nearly a year ago, but one thing it has consistently done is post a smaller deficit than what the pros are forecasting. Wall Street was settling for a loss of $0.12 a share, and Model N sported only $0.03 a share in red ink. The stock soared 19% on Tuesday after the better-than-expected report. I was right. After more than a year of predicting that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) , I mixed things up two weeks ago. I simply predicted that the Dow would bounce back after plunging 3.5% and 1.1% over the prior two weeks. I repeated the call this time around, and the Dow responded with a hearty 2.3% gain. I was right. My final call was for LeapFrog (NYSE: LF ) to beat Wall Street’s income estimates in its latest quarter. The maker of electronic learning toys has been routinely beating Wall Street projections over the past year. I was banking on a repeat performance, but it wasn’t to be. LeapFrog merely broke even on a sharper drop in revenue than expected. Analysts had been braced for a profit of $0.14 a share. I was wrong.
Two out of three? I can do better than that. Let me once again whip out my trusty, dusty, and occasionally accurate crystal ball to make three calls that may play out over the next few trading days.

Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd (QIHU) is a stock I have mentioned a few times in the past few weeks. In the most recent quarter this company had sales growth of over 100% and earnings surged by more than 200% year over year. Competitor Qihoo 360 (QIHU) responded by doing the same on its mobile search results pages, but Baidu was clearly the first to the market on the front. BIDU is apt to out-innovate the mobile competition in the future as well, especially now that it’s gotten serious about making “91 Wireless” app marketplace into a more potent package of mobile-based tools and attractions.
