One potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is men’s apparel products player Oxford Industries (OXM), which is set to release numbers Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Oxford Industries to report revenue of $243.48 million on earnings of 98 cents per share.

If this company can manage to beat or meet Wall Street’s earnings estimates this quarter, then it would mark the biggest quarterly gain in the last six quarter.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Oxford Industries is not able at 5.7%. That means that out of the 14.31 million shares in the tradable float, 817,000 shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 3.8%, or by about 29,000 shares. If the bears are caught being too aggressive into a solid quarter, then shares of OXM could soar higher post-earnings as the bears rush to cover some of their bets.

From a technical perspective, OXM is currently trending above its 200-day moving average and just below its 50-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock recently sold off hard from its August high of $69.29 to its low of $61.10 with higher-than-average volume flows. Shares of OXM have now started to rebound a bit off that low of $61.10 with strong upside volume flows. That move is quickly pushing shares of OXM within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

If you’re bullish on OXM, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above its 50-day moving average at $65.77 a share to more resistance at $65.93 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 103,286 shares. If that breakout triggers, then OXM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $69.28 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then give OXM a chance t

Advisors’ Opinion:

Shares of Halliburton (HAL) and Baker Hughes (BHI) are soaring after they announced that they’d challenge the U.S. Department of Justice’s decision to block their merger. RBC’s Kurt Hallead has the details:

    Associated Press

Shares of both companies rose ~5% following the joint press release indicating they would challenge the DoJ’s decision to oppose the pending merger.

Following numerous media reports this week that the DoJ would move to block the pending Halliburton-Baker Hughes merger, the companies today issued a joint press release vowing to contest the DoJ’s effort to stop the deal.

This confirms that the DoJ is, in fact, planning to sue to halt the pending merger. While it is extremely difficult to handicap potential outcomes at this point, it appears likely that a resolution will be delayed further. The next critical date is April 30, after which either party can choose to walk away if regulatory approval has not been obtained.

Wells Fargo’s Judson Bailey and Christopher Voie explain why they’re still bullish on Baker Hughes:

With the DOJ announcing it will block the Halliburton-Baker Hughes transaction, we believe the recent increase inHalliburton shares makes sense but believe that the risk/reward forBaker Hughes as a stand-alone entity may be more compelling with what we view as an exceptionally strong balance sheet and operational upside potential off of a depressed base.

Potential Deal Still Up In The Air. Although the DOJ is blocking the Halliburton-Baker Hughes merger, the final outcome is still uncertain as there is a decent probability, in our view, that Halliburton will contest the decision and go to court over the issue. However, even ifHalliburton pursues this course, it is also a distinct probability thatBaker Hughes elects to exercise its rights under the merger agreement to terminate the merger after April 30 and collect the $3.5B break-up fee.<

Advisors’ Opinion:

Early on Friday, analysts at RBC Capital boosted the near-term estimates on SanDisk Corporation (SNDK), a manufacturer of data storage products, because a fire at SK Hynix’s factory should lead to favorable pricing over the next two quarters.

“We see a favorable pricing environment as a result of SK Hynix’s fire, which threatens to curtail NAND output as the company likely re-purposes production back toward DRAM, resulting in lower than expected incremental NAND wafers vs. company’s plan of 170K/WPM,” RBC Capital analyst Freedman said. “Consequently, we see stronger pricing through EoY before SK Hynix ramps NAND toward normalized prod’t levels as DRAM resources are restored/replaced.”

The analysts maintain an “Outperform” rating on SDNK and still see shares reaching $76. This price target suggests a 26% upside to the stock’s Thursday closing price of $60.08. Furthermore, they boosted SanDisk’s 2013 EPS estimates from $4.82 to $4.95.

SanDisk shares were up a fraction during pre-market trading on Friday. The stock is up 38.11% year-to-date.
