Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Melvin Backman]

JD.com is the latest in a number of big Chinese tech IPOs this year. But several of them have fizzled after hot starts. Weibo (WB), the Twitter-like social media site owned by Sina (SINA), is down nearly 10% from where it began trading last month. Jumei International Holding (JMEI), a cosmetics website that debuted last week, is now barely above its IPO price.

  • [By Anna Prior]

Chinese Internet company Sina Corp.(SINA) said it was hit by a $815,000 fine and received notices from the government that certain licenses would be revoked over “unhealthy and indecent content.” The company separately said it expects first-quarter revenue and adjusted per-share earnings that topped analysts’ expectations. Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

Both Suntech and Chaori Solar have already filed, while LDK (LDK) is in the process of doing so and delisting from the NYSE.

All of this negative activity doesn’t inspire a whole lot of confidence in Chinese solar stocks. For investors, the best course of action could be to bail on the sector completely or at least move out of individual names and into a broad play like the TAN or Market Vectors Solar Energy ETF (KWT).

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

For investors looking to profit from shorting stocks in the sector, JA Solar Holdings (NASDAQ: JASO) and LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK) are both vulnerable. For those looking to go long, Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) is very strong in natural gas, which is expected to increase its market share, according to a recent report from the Department of Energy.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] g>Sun Life Financial Inc. (USA) (SLF), which all sport a 200% ratio. Moreover, the company’s excessive capital should allow it to maintain the above average dividend yield of 2.66% offered to shareholders.

    Valuation

Over the next five years growth in the Asian market will likely boost the overall modest premium growth rate, averaging it at 2%, while the total revenue CAGR recovers to 3% after the steep declines reported since 2012. Furthermore, Manulife’s ROE will continue its current upward trend, increasing from 2013’s 10.9% to an average 12% by 2018, accompanied by the steadily expanding net margins of 16.8%. While it will take some time for the company’s growth to accelerate, I feel bullish about management’s optimism regarding its business shift, and see the dividend yield and returns on equity as solid benefits for a long term investment. Moreover, the firm is currently trading at a 10% price discount relative to the industry average of 14.0x, making it a relatively inexpensive buy.

That 40% gain in net income is likely to be among the lower increases reported by China’s insurance companies in the next few weeks. The average growth in net income among insurers expected by analysts is 92%. I think that makes it worthwhile holding the best of these insurers—such as Ping An and China Life (LFC), a member of my Jubak’s Picks portfolio, for these earnings reports, even though the systemic stress—and thus risk—in China’s financial system is rising.

China is set to ease the one child policy, something that could benefit Chinese stocks in general but be especially beneficial to insurance stocks like China Life Insurance Company Ltd (NYSE: LFC) and CNinsure Inc (NASDAQ: CISG) plus health care stocks like Mindray Medical International Ltd (NYSE: MR) and Concord Medical Services Hldg Ltd (NYSE: CCM). First, let’s be clear that China is NOT abolishing the one child policy as the changes will merely allow married couples to have two children if one spouse is an only child plus it will be up to China’s 34 province-level administrations to revise their laws and put the new policy into effect. Moreover, China’s family-planning bureaucracy employs more than 500,000 full-time workers and six million part-time workers all the way down to the village level to collect billions of dollars in fines and these bureaucrats have fought for years against policy changes – meaning they could throw up roadblocks if not placated. With that said, the insurance and health care sectors are two sectors with publicly Chinese stocks that look set to take advantage of the coming changes.

Which solar power stocks are the proverbial picks of the litter, though? Here are the first five a newcomer might want to consider.

    ReneSola Ltd. (SOL)

While most solar stocks have done incredibly well so far in 2014, ReneSola (SOL) wasn’t one of them. In fact, SOL stock is a bit unusual in that it’s trading well under its October high of $6 per share. That’s not a bad thing, though. In fact, it may work to your advantage because it gives new buyers a chance to scoop up ReneSola shares at a bargain price before their next big run-up.
